Abstract This thesis considers images of the falling body after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, starting with Associated Press photographer Richard Drew’s photograph of a person falling to their death from the north tower of the World Trade Center. From this specific photograph, this thesis follows various intersecting lines in what I am calling a meshwork of falling-body images. Consequently, each chapter encounters a wide range of examples of falling: from literature to films, personal websites to digital content and immersive technologies to art works. Rather than connecting these instances like nodes, this thesis is more concerned with exploring lines of relation and the way the image moves along these lines. -

62 Kroeber Anthropological Society Papers Vol. 102/103 KROEBER ANTHROPOLOGICAL SOCIETY, 103(1): 62-75 In the Aftermath of Terror: Iraqi Refugees, Loss, and Life in Contemporary California Maia Wolins Preface This paper is part of a larger ethnographic research effort that I undertook for my senior honors thesis about the aftermath of the Iraq war as defined by the experiences of American veterans and Iraqi refugees in the United States. The research on which this study is based derives from a full year of participant observation, group discussions, and individual qualitative interviews with 13 Iraqi refugees of the former professional class that relocated to northern California after 2003 and, separately, with 13 American veterans of the war who are pursuing higher education at a competitive university, also in northern California. While I argue that the aftermath as a whole can only be understood through the perspectives of both, narratives from within each group are also uniquely insightful. This paper is thus a modified version of one chapter of my thesis and focuses on the drastic change in opportunity that the Iraqi refugees experienced. I told them, I have not very good background with the United States, because I just run away from them, from what happened in my country… They told me, it’s not your choice. Considering one example of this depiction — U.S. journalism's photographic coverage of the killing of the Taliban by the Northern Alliance during the war on Afghanistan, the article traces its strategic appearance and recycling across the U.S. news media and shows how the beatings and deaths of the Taliban were depicted in ways that fell short of journalism's proclaimed objective of fully documenting the events of the war. The article argues that in so doing, U.S. journalism failed to raise certain questions about the nature of the alliance between the United States and its allies on Afghanistan's northern front. Keywords: Afghanistan, images, journalism, wartime, death 2 How images are used to depict death in wartime has long been a troublesome practice for those who cover war. Ever since journalists at newspapers, newsmagazines, television, and the internet began to accommodate the inclusion of images as part of war’s coverage, the fundamental question of whether, how and in which fashion to include images of death has never been sufficiently clarified. The topic of death raises profound moral questions over who has the right and ability to live and die, and under which circumstances. -

Aesthetics of Terror: Reflections on Post-9/11 Literature and Visual Culture by John Christopher Vanderwees A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Language and Literature Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 John Christopher Vanderwees Vanderwees ii Abstract This dissertation project investigates cultural responses to visual representations of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. I examine the aesthetics, contexts, movements, and politics of post-9/11 visual culture across a range of media with a primary focus on photography and fiction. Recent scholarly articles and book length surveys on post-9/11 culture overwhelmingly charge popular literary and visual texts with participating in the reproduction of hegemonic norms and supporting a regressive climate of anti-feminism, hyper-masculinity, and reactionary politics. I contend that many scholars have actually foreclosed alternative interpretations and the production of new knowledge regarding post-9/11 literature and visual culture in the pursuit to reveal dominant ideologies at work. This project unfolds in three main sections, each of which develops “reparative readings” of visual and literary texts in an attempt to redeem valuable political, ethical, and affective aspects of post-9/11 visual culture that scholars have previously discounted or overlooked. The first section outlines post-9/11 victory culture and American exceptionalism through corporate media suppression of Richard Drew’s photograph, “The Falling Man.” I examine how dominant national narratives repress Drew’s photograph in an analysis of New York nostalgia and the cultural resurgence of tightrope walker Philippe Petit. -
