Drummond (2002a; 2005; 2010) has found that men will use sport and health-related sports acts to conceal these concerns from others. Accordingly, men’s body dissatisfactions are documented less frequently because the practices drawn upon to conceal them are perceived as routine forms of masculine behaviour. Rugby union is one of the most popular sports played by young men in England. Historically, the male rugby player is culturally perceived as strong, tough and unemotionally articulate. Existing research draws attention to health issues, such as performance stress and injury that arise through participation in this sport. Research also shows that rugby union players are likely to experience concerns about gaining weight, yet these are disguised within the requirements of training for the sport. Although, there are studies that examine the constitution of masculinities, the experience of pain and injury and career transitions among rugby union players there are no studies, as yet, that examine how rugby union men experience body concerns and manage these experiences through their sport. -

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION In this chapter the writer presents the discussion on the background of the study, the research questions, the definitions of key terms, the objectives of the study, the significances of the study, and the organization of the thesis. A. Background of the Study The study of these signs, codes and conventions in film is called semiotics or semiotic analysis. Semiotic analysis is a way to explain how an audience makes meaning from codes. Peirce in Manoon de Reeper (1997: 20). American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce (1839). He wrote that a sign “is something which stands to somebody for something in some respect or capacity”. Zeman (1977: 24). All meaning is encoded in that which creates the meaning. No object or word is without meaning one cannot read or see something without associating it to a certain idea. Everyone has been taught how to decode what they see, read and hear. We have all learned to decode meaning. It is how we make sense of our surroundings, essentially, of the world. Semiotic analysis is used to “read” a film and its text. It’s mostly used in academic study of film. Peirce proposes several typologies and definitions of the signs. More than 76 definitions of what a sign is have been collected throughout Peirce's work. Some canonical typologies can nonetheless be observed, one crucial one being the distinction between "iconix", "indexical" and "symbolic". The icon, 1 2 index and symbol sign typology is chronologically the first but structurally the second of three that fit together as a trio of three-valued parameters in regular scheme of nine kinds of sign. -

Determinants of Motion Picture Box Office and Profitability: An
RMS (2007) 1:65-92 DOI 10.1007/s11846-007-0003-9 ORIGINAL PAPER Determinants of motion picture box office and profitability: an interrelationship approach Thorsten Hennig-Thurau Æ Mark B. Houston Æ Gianfranco Walsh Received: 13 October 2006 / Accepted: 11 December 2006 / Published online: 27 March 2007 Ó Springer-Verlag 2007 Abstract Introduction Producing and marketing motion pictures is notoriously risky, with only three out of ten movies breaking even and one becoming profitable at the box office. Extending knowledge on the factors that influence a movie’s box-office and on the interrelations between these factors can be seen as major contribution to aid in lowering the number of failures in the motion picture industry. The major aim of this study is to distinguish direct and indirect effects between potential success drivers and motion picture success by understanding the interrelationships among different determinants of movie success. Methods Hypotheses are developed with regard to the relationships among a number of factors that have been shown to impact motion-picture box office as well as movie profitability. Applying path analysis, which allows a simultaneous testing of factor interrelations, the hypotheses are subsequently tested against a sample of 331 movies. Results and conclusion The factors considered in the analysis explain a remarkable amount of a movie’s success. The findings improve the movie industry’s understanding of motion picture success because for the first time interrelationships between the var- ious factors are considered, which enables the separation of direct and indirect (i.e., Communicated by Ralf Ewert. McGrail and Ewa McGrail In this chapter, we analyze and critique the film Bad Teacher (Miller & Kasdan, 2011). In our view, it cynically panders to the worst aspects of contemporary pessimism toward educational outcomes in the US (Beck, 2012; Thomsen, 1993; Vandermeersche, Soetaert, &; Rutten, 2013). We argue, however, that Bad Teacher is actually consonant with Hollywood’s well-known narrative memes of redemption of the fallen (Carter, 2009; Reyes & Rios, 2003). -

Though the printed word is essential in learning, educators have been taking notice of the new visual and oratory stimuli and incorporated them into classroom teaching. The purpose of this idea packet is to further introduce teacher colleagues to this methodology and share a compilation of films which may be easily implemented in secondary social studies instruction. Though this project focuses in grades 6-12 social studies we believe that media should be infused into all K-12 subject areas, from language arts, math, and foreign languages, to science, the arts, physical education, and more. In this day and age, students have become accustomed to acquiring knowledge through mediums such as television and movies. Though books and text are essential in learning, teachers should take notice of the new visual stimuli. Films are familiar in the everyday lives of students.
