2021 Teaching About Law. Advancing Justice for All. For almost 50 years, Street Law has leveraged the promise of legal and civic education to empower young people and build citizen-responsive institutions. Every day, our inclusive initiatives build the skills of young people, lift their voices, and propel communities and systems towards equity and justice. • We build young people’s civic knowledge, skills, and attitudes. • We empower people vulnerable to injustice through legal life skills. • We foster diversity in the legal profession. • We strengthen democratic culture and rule of law. • We engage with law schools to bring practical legal knowledge into communities. • We leverage the capacity of systems to better serve their constituents. #SLIawards @StreetLawInc 1010 Wayne Avenue, Suite 870, Silver Spring, MD 20910, U.S.A. | tel. +1 301-589-1130 | [email protected] | www.streetlaw.org TONIGHT’S AWARDS PROGRAM WELCOME Master of Ceremonies Molly Martinez Ohio Statehouse Reporter for Spectrum News 1 (Columbus, OH) INTERVIEW WITH THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Ashok Regmi, Executive Director, Street Law, Inc. When I joined Street Law, Inc. as the executive director on January 1, 2021, I knew that I was taking on an important responsibility at a difficult time for our communities characterized by increased polarization, widening inequities, lack of trust in systems, and struggle for racial and social justice. However, I also knew that I was joining an organization that has a five-decade-long legacy of persistence and grit in addressing these very same issues. I’m proud to say that we rose to the challenges of 2020 and doubled down on our mission to equip the next generation with the civic knowledge and skills and legal acumen to exercise their rights and be architects of a more just and inclusive society. I’m in awe of the enthusiasm, generosity, and steadfastness of you—our sponsoring companies and law firms who come together each spring to generate essential support for our essential work. Even though we’ve not been able to gather in person for the last two awards programs, your support had not waned. Thank you. We miss you and look forward to you joining us in spring 2022 for the 50th anniversary of the first Street Law program. I can’t wait Ashok Regmi to celebrate together! Executive Director Sincerely, Street Law, Inc. 2021 EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD Shiney Abraham Alief Early College High School Houston, TX Shiney Abraham has been teaching for 24 years in the same Houston school district. She began her career teaching 8th grade U.S. history before moving into her district’s curriculum instruction department and serving five years as a Middle School Social Studies Specialist. Shiney then joined her current position at Alief Early College High School (AECHS), a school whose student body is predominantly young people of color from low-income families. Since she began teaching at AECHS, Shiney has expanded her teaching practice to incorporate interactive, relevant teaching materials covering law and government, thanks in large part to Street Law’s training and curricula. Shiney’s participated in the 2019 the Supreme Court Summer Institute, which served as a jumping-off point for further involvement with Street Law. Her school has now also joined Street Law’s Legal Diversity Pipeline Program. Street Law-trained volunteers from the local Houston chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel and volunteers from the University of Houston Law School visit Shiney’s classroom, and, working alongside Shiney, they teach students about the laws affecting their everyday lives as well as the pathways to pursuing legal careers. Through the tutelage provided by these partnerships, one of Shiney’s mock trial teams also won second place in a competition in November! 2021 EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE AWARD AIG Since 2012, AIG has participated in Street Law’s Legal Diversity Pipeline Program. Using the training and curricular materials received from Street Law, AIG partners with local high schools to teach young people about the law and legal careers. More than 150 AIG volunteers have spent over 3,500 hours working with nearly 800 high school students teaching Street Law lessons across three program sites: Heights High School in Houston; the Urban Assembly School of Business for Young Women in New York; and Theodore Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles. The Street Law Legal Diversity Pipeline Program is one of AIG’s most popular pro bono initiatives. Volunteers teach the students how to navigate legal situations that might arise in their daily life, such as the relationship between cyberbullying and the law, developing and maintaining credit, identifying sexual harassment, and entering into contracts. Students who participate in the program report a deeper understanding of the laws that affect their everyday lives as well as a greater interest in pursuing a legal career. When asked if they were more interested in the legal profession after completing AIG’s Street Law program, a student from the 2019 program in Houston said, “Yes, [this program] makes me more interested in law because I know more of the law [and the] rights I have.” SPECIAL THANKS 2021 AWARDS PROGRAM MASTER OF CEREMONIES HOST COMMITTEE MOLLY MARTINEZ Harvey Anderson HP Inc.
