BREAKING OPEN THE WORD WITH DR. KATHY O ’ CONNOR DECEMBER 29: THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH

Reading I: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14: Sirach is one of the Wisdom books of the Old Testament. It contains a large number of wisdom maxims deriving from many sources. According to John Paul II, it is one of those works in which “Holy Scripture indicates with remarkably clear cues how deeply related are the knowledge conferred by faith and the knowledge conferred by reason”. Ben Sirach was aware that the really important things have to be studied in the light of divine Wisdom given to men, that is, reason enlightened by , which is in fact what Christian theology does. Our passage for Mass this weekend is full of traditional wisdom encouraging people to be observant and to reflect on life in order to discover the best route to happiness. Here it focuses on the relationship between children and their parents: honoring one’s parents brings blessings. Part of the passage dwells on children’s duties to their parents when they can no longer look after themselves. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “As much as they can, they give them material and moral support in old age and in times of illness, loneliness, or distress.”

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 (1): Fearing the Lord is really the same thing as keeping His commandments. The beatitude promised here is a happy family life, with enough means to live on and peace between parents and children.

Reading II: Colossians 3:12-21: Our passage from Colossians is from part of the letter in which St. Paul shares how one can make progress in the spiritual life. Putting on the new nature is not just an external action like putting on different clothes. It is a transfiguration involving the whole person: soul, mind, body, and will. This interior change begins to operate when on makes a firm resolution to lead a fully Christian life. It requires on going effort day in and day out. The virtues which Paul lists here as characteristic of the new person are all expressions, in one way or another, of charity. Practicing charity is the fullness of the law and the bond of perfection. The peace of Christ is not a peace the world can give because it is not a function of purely material progress or well-being, nor is it the sort of peace that should exist among nations. Rather, it is peace which flows from the new order of grace which Jesus has established; grace gives man direct access to God and therefore to that peace for which we deeply yearn. As St. Augustine wrote, “Thou has made us for Thyself and our hearts are restless till they rest in you”. The word of Christ is the whole corpus of our Lord’s teachings, of which the Apostles are accredited witnesses. Jesus’ teachings are an inexhaustible source of practical teaching. St. John Crysostom says that these writings “are teachers which never cease to instruct us. Open these books. What a treasury of good remedies they contain!” At the end of the passage, St. Paul discusses the morals of family life: each member of the family is to be loved, cherished, and respected. Children should obey their parents; it is pleasing to God. In fact, God commands this; a commandment which shows that this is something which is part of human nature. For their part, parents must do everything they can to bring up their children well. In every family there should be an educational exchange between parents and children (Eph 6:1-4) in which each gives and receives.

Gospel: Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23: Our passage for this weekend begins as the magi have departed after having adored the baby Jesus. After their departure, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph telling him to flee with Mary and Jesus to Egypt. Egypt was a traditional place of refuge for Israelites fleeing danger. Continued on the next page... Continued from the previous page… The angel explains why it is necessary for him to flee to Egypt with his family: Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him. In addition, the angel tells Joseph to remain in Egypt until the angel tells him it is safe for the family to leave. Joseph has no idea how long this will be, yet, Joseph unquestioningly obeys God’s instructions and immediately departs for Egypt. The Holy Family might be looked upon as patron saints for today’s political refugees. Yet Matthew does not dwell on the hardships they might have experienced. Rather, Matthew portrays Joseph as a man living an upright life that periodically takes sudden turns. Joseph is betrothed to Mary but discovers she is pregnant and learns from an angel that it is through the Holy Spirit. In due course, her child is born, than magi arrive, followed by angelic instructions to flee to Egypt. We might think of Joseph as a patron saint for those whose lives take unexpected turns as they try to remain faithful to God. The Holy Family goes to Egypt and the slaughter of the Innocents takes place when Herod found he had been duped by the magi. Herod orders the massacre of boys two years and under. The Holy Family remained in Egypt until Herod died at which time the angel told them to return to Israel. Again, Joseph obeys, but on the way to Israel he learns that Herod’s son has succeeded the father and he is every bit as ruthless as Herod. So, Joseph is now afraid to return to Bethlehem. Joseph does return to Judea but not to Bethlehem. He thus is in a quandary. But he does not need to decide on his own what to do. He again receives divine guidance: in a dream he was warned to depart for the region of Galilee and settled in a town called Nazareth.

Reflection: Jesus chose to take on human life in all its dimensions, entering into a family and thus giving real people crucial roles in the plan of salvation. God entrusted Mary and Joseph with caring for the child Jesus. He helped them here and there with divine interventions but leaving most of the work up to them. The Holy Family is not holy because Mary and Joseph never struggled, never wondered what to do, or never had problems; the Holy Family is holy because in the face of all their challenges they never let their trust in God waver. They did their best, trusting that God would take care of the rest and He did. Perhaps this week we might reflect on the following: 1)Has God asked open-ended obedience of me, telling me only the next step I am to take; 2) What unexpected turns has my life taken; what can I learn from the example of Joseph; 3) How has God guided me when I did not know what to do? Lord, I believe that you choose to work out my salvation by making use of my cooperation, but at times I wonder why. Sometimes I would prefer that you leave it all up to me, and other times I want you todo everything for me and just let me kick back and relax. Life is so unsteady, Lord. Be my anchor. Don’t let the storms and temptations throw me off course. Teach me to do your will….
