Vettes For Pets 23 Cruise Sun., Aug. 09 | Many things changed in 2020. With the disbanding of the Easton Area Corvette Club, the annual car show held in Meuser Park (Easton, PA) became a cruise and was hosted by The Center for Animal Health and Welfare— the primary beneficiary. The weather was terrific and 20 AACC cars attended including 4 of our newest members. Eve- ryone had a wonderful time and it was great to see everyone out and about again.

Top 20 Awards were presented. AACC’s winners included Gary & JoAnn Warmkessel (’65 Corvette) and Cheryl & Randy Beck (‘70 Plymouth AAR ‘Cuda).

The Votes Are In Thanks to everyone who came out and exercised your Allentown Area Corvette Club membership rights by voting in our two (2) elections during August. Things were certainly different with AACC’s first (known) drive-through voting experience. All active, spousal and lifetime members were mailed paper ballots for submission during a specified time frame on what would have been our club meeting nights. Upon arrival at the Park & Ride (Easton, PA) members were first greeted by Marty and Laura Hegyi to check in, then proceeded to drop off their ballots for Kevin and Michelle Minnich to tally. It really was a smooth operation.

The first ballot— on Aug. 12th — was to replace two vacated Board positions through August 2021. Bruce Garnto and Jack Iatarola were our Interim Board Director winners.

 Interim Board Directors—(l to r) Bruce Garnto, Jack Iatarola

A short two weeks later on Aug 26th, we were back at the Park & Ride for our general elections wherein members cast their ballots for the 2020-2021 Officers and incoming 2020-2022 Board Members. With many positions being uncon- tested, the only actual balloting needed was for the Board positions. Your incoming Officers and Board Members are:

 President Mark Dressel  Vice-Pres. David Hausman  Secretary Carol Jenkins

 Treasurer Bernie Toth  Board Chair Ken Beck Board Members  Joel Dean,

 Dave Hornung Congratulations everyone and best wishes for many successes during your coming terms. Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 6 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 9 | September 2020 Membership / Events

AACC Members Win NCM Raffle Thu., Aug. 20 | The NCM held a Facebook Live Stream event for the drawing of their 2021 Black Stingray Corvette raffle winner. After pulling a yellow ticket from the basket, a phone call was made from Bowling Green, KY to New Tripo- li, PA with hopes of speaking to ticket holder #1948 — AACC’s very own Jim Flader!! Unfortunately the NCM had to leave a message, but how awesome of a voicemail would this be to receive?

Check out the Facebook post (the audio is very hard to understand). Jim and Donna (Sowden) purchased only one of the 2,000 available tickets – the lucky one! Reportedly, the car will be available in early 2021. Jim and Donna expect to take delivery at the NCM, but will not drive the car back in the middle of winter.

Congratulations Jim & Donna!! Watch the excitement at  https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2294248107387248&extid=mRvlBa1RZXCgzOa4.

Road America: Another Wild 1-2 Finish by CorvetteRacing.com Sun., Aug. 02 | Corvette Racing took its second consecutive 1-2 finish in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Champion- ship’s GT Le Mans (GTLM class) following a chaotic finish Sunday at Road America. Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor won for the second time in their No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM C8.R following a late-race pass in torrential rain.

Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner placed second in the sister No. 4 Corvette C8.R. It was the eighth victory at Road Amer- ica for Corvette Racing, and the team’s first there since 2016. Garcia and Taylor both won for the first time in their IM- SA career at Road America and extended their points lead to 10 in the class. Gavin and Milner unofficially moved to third in the standings.

Chevrolet also grew its lead in the GTLM Manufacturer’s Championship to eight points. Corvette Racing has now won three consecutive races in the category.

Things weren’t looking positive for the first half of the race. Taylor, who qualified second, led early but the expected tire degradation reduced the pace for the GTLM cars. Adding to the problems for the team were electronics issues on the No. 4 Corvette that left both Gavin and Milner without traction control.

The predicted rain for the race came with just under an hour to go. Garcia, who took over with two hours left in the race, was the first GTLM runner to pit for rain tires and stopped from sixth place. Two other GTLM cars followed suit but three others stayed out, including the then-leading Porsche which skidded off-track during a downpour at Turn One.

Milner remained on slick tires during the first deluge as officials halted the race with 43 minutes left. The rain let up initially before cars returned to the track with about 25 minutes to go once the red flag was lifted. Following the final pit stops for wet tires, racing resumed with seven minutes left and Garcia in second place.

An even more intense rain began to fall with just minutes left in the two-hour, 40-minute race. Garcia was locked in a back-and-forth duel with Porsche’s Nick Tandy just before the GTLM leader and the third-place Porsche went off-track late in the lap. Both Garcia and Milner, who did a masterful job on a wet track with no traction control, were able to get through the chaos and took the checkered flag under a race-ending, full-course caution period.

Corvette Racing’s next event is the GT-only Michelin GT Challenge at Virginia Internation- al Raceway on Saturday, Aug. 22. Page 9 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 9 | September 2020

2021 Corvette ‘Stingray R’ Graphic by Keith Cornett (CorvetteBlogger.com) Mon., Aug. 03 | On Saturday we shared photos of the first C8 Corvettes to wear an official pace car livery. Two Arc- tic White Z51 Coupes were used at the IMSA race at Road America to set the pace during the race. Over the course of the weekend, more photos emerged including these official pics from Team Chevy, and with the different views comes what could be several elements of the rumored “Stingray R” special edition.

We’ve been hearing about the “Stingray ”R special edition since a dealer leak in March[,] but so far the Corvette Team has been fairly tight-lipped about what the Stingray R actually is. We anticipated that we’d see more Yellow/Silver for the Stingray R package in keeping with the Corvette Racing racing liveries, as well as Chevrolet offering the new interior color (Sky Cool Gray seats with Strike Yellow accents) to bring more yellow into the cockpit. So we are surprised to see how much Red is being shown here.

On the Road America Pace Cars, we see the front splitter shows the “Stingray ”R graphic while the hood stripe isn’t just a racing stripe, but contains a representation of Corvette Racing’s Jake with the words Corvette Racing in red. The graphic is done in a Carbon Fiber motif with the reverse side offered in black much like the C7 Jake Stinger graphics were offered on the previous model.

Also spied on the roof of the car is a similarly-designed reverse graphic featuring the Chevy Bowtie logo. We also have to believe that the “Stingray” windshield banner is part of the package and we certainly love the Edge Red mirror caps on each side of the car. As the Corvettes race in the GTLM class, our C8.Rs also have red mirror caps for easy class iden- tification.

As we mentioned in our weekend Pace Car posting, we absolutely love the graphics on the 5VM aero kits that are also done in the same red as the mirror caps. We wonder how much of a factor that the 5VM plays in the package. With the 5VM sidelined for the foreseeable future, it could be that the delay that is keeping the Cor- vette Team from announcing the details and availability of the Stingray R package. 2020 Convertibles Start Today by Keith Cornett (CorvetteBlogger.com) Mon., Aug. 03 | It’s been a long time coming, but today we received confirmation that the first 2020 Corvette Con- vertibles have started production. The plant has been building convertibles for the Captured Test Fleet for the last few months so it’s not anything new to the production team, but it is great news for buyers who have been patiently waiting for this day to come.

We have been reminded that Convertible production will see a ramp-up so expect quantities to be small in these first few weeks before gradually expanding into its regular production schedule.

We are also expecting a quality-control hold on these first batches of the HTC, but I doubt it will be too long. It would be very cool to see a customer-ordered convertible showing up later this month at Corvettes at Carlisle or the NCM’s Anniversary Show, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

The 2020 Corvette Convertible is our favorite model of the two and we can’t wait to see those happy customers show- ing off their rides. We expect the number of videos on YouTube showing the hardtop convertible’s operation to grow exponentially in next few months so brace yourselves for that!

That’s the latest we have on the Convertible C8 Corvette…stay tuned for any updates or news we can pass along! For a recap of all things related to the C8 Corvette Stingray Convertible, just hit this link to check out our previous stories on the HTC.

GM Keeps E-Ray Name in Back Pocket by Sebastien Bell (GMInsideNews.com) Wed., Aug. 05 | This is as much a clerical update as it is a scoop but since the concepts of electricity and Corvette in such close proximity, it felt worth mentioning.

GM has refiled to trademark the name E-Ray with the US Patent and Trademark Office. The name, about which we have no official details, but which causes the imagination to run, may soon still be applied to a vehicle. Perhaps one beginning with “C” and ending with “orvette.”

But let’s not get too excited. GM first filed a trademark on the name in December of 2015. It had until August 1 to do something with the name before the trademark lapsed.

Now, five years is a long time and what may have seemed like a good idea then is looking like a great idea now. With the letters EV standing for en vogue these days, and GM increasingly interested in showing off its Ultium battery tech- nology, not to mention just how much room there is near the Corvette’s engine, GM may have a renewed interest in claiming the name.

Sadly, with a number of other EVs on the way, like the Hummer and the Lyriq, we likely won’t see more, if anything, for a while. Page 11 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 9 | September 2020

Chevy’s Online Enthusiast Celebration by Sam McEachern (GMAuthority.com) Wed., Aug. 05 | “Chevrolet is reimagining summer car cruising through a week-long virtual festival– Cruisin’ the USA in your Chevrolet – that celebrates more than a century of the brand’s automotive history,” the automaker said in a statement. “Hosted on Chevy’s social media channels from August 10-16, the event is designed to take viewers back in time to experience the brand’s rich heritage of innovation, design and passion.”

This celebration is intended as a sort of unofficial replacement for the Woodward Dream Cruise, which was previously set to be held this month but was later canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Just like Dream Cruise, the online event will offer something for Chevy fans of all types, with each day incorporating a different theme.

The event will kick off by looking at back at the Chevrolet brand’s inception in 1911, with the automaker preparing to release archival videos from the last 109 years “showcasing Chevy’s memorable feats,” it said in a statement. The au- tomaker will then move through the different eras and explore new themes each day of the celebration.

Additionally, each day will feature commentary and analysis from various Chevrolet experts, who will provide “in-depth looks at some of the brand’s most iconic vehicles housed at the General Motors Heritage Center and even share their own custom Chevy builds.”

The schedule of events for the “Cruisin the USA in your Chevrolet” online event is as follows:

 August 10: The Origins and Innovations of Chevrolet

 August 11: Chevy’s Most Iconic Designs

 August 12: The Proud Truck Tradition

 August 13: The Peak of Performance

 August 14: Team Chevy – A Culture of Winning

 August 15: Chevy’s Heritage – A Fan Celebration

 August 16: Race Day – Cheering on Team Chevy at NASCAR and the NHRA Nationals

Chevrolet fans who want to participate in the event should follow the brand’s Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest pages, along with the Team Chevy motorsports twitter account, before the virtual festivities kick off next week.

Bloomington Gold Adds Resto-Mods by Steve Burns (CorvetteBlogger.com) Wed., Aug. 05 | Bloomington Gold late last week announced an exciting addition to their judging portfolio. Begin- ning this year at their Indianapolis event, they’ll be judging Restomod Corvettes in addition to factory correct restora- tions and unrestored originals. It’s no secret that Restomods are one of the fastest-growing corners of the Corvette hobby so it just makes sense that Bloomington Gold would embrace this trend.

“Restoration is like the skyline of a big city. There are numerous buildings in height, shape and width and we recognize that everyone’s preference for the type of Corvette they like best is just as diverse,” says Guy Larsen, President and Judg- ing Director at Bloomington Gold. “So, after much consideration, discussion and testing,” continues Larsen, “Bloomington Gold decided to offer Resto Mod as a division of Judging at Bloomington Gold. In fact, we are excited to say that we will start judging them this September in Indy.”

Bloomington’s new RESTO MOD category will recognize the seamless integration of today’s technology into classic Cor- vettes. That combination results in individualized styling, improved handling and performance, as well as upgraded comfort. Overall the Corvette is brought up to modern standards while still retaining that classic Corvette design.

Bloomington’s owner, Guy Larsen, emailed us to let us know that they’re now accepting applications for the new Resto Mod class. In order to be considered for judging, owners should submit digital photos of their build along with the VIN to Bloomington Gold.

For more information on the new Resto Mod class or to submit your Restomod for judging at Bloomington Gold, reach out to Guy Larsen at 8 [email protected] or call 708.906.6000.

C8 Paces Indy 500 (Again) by Sam McEachern (GMAuthority.com) Wed., Aug. 12 | The 2020 Corvette Stingray will lead the field to green for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500.

The official Indy 500 pace car will be a Torch Red coupe equipped with the optional Z51 performance package, acces- sory spoiler and ground effects package, Carbon Flash ac- cents, GT2 bucket seats and an Indy 500-themed livery. Be- hind the wheel will be General Motors President Mark Reuss.

“This is a continuation of our outstanding partnership with Chevrolet,” Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Doug- las Boles said in a prepared statement. “We’re so grateful for all that Chevrolet has contributed to the success of our events. The Torch Red 2020 Corvette Stingray is a world-class machine rich with speed, performance and excitement, perfectly suited to pace the ‘500’ field.”

C8 Pacer (Continued...)

(Continued from page 12)

The Corvette has led the Indy 500 field to green more than any other vehicle. The first time the ‘Vette paced the field for the Greatest Spectacle in racing was way back in 1978 and has now done so a total of 17 times. This will also be the 31st time a Chevrolet has led the field to green, with the first time being way back in 1948, when a Chevy Fleetmaster Six convertible took on the responsibility. The Chevrolet Camaro is the second most common Indy 500 pace car behind the Corvette.

Chevrolet has its roots in motor racing and a special relationship with the Indy 500. Company co-founder Louis Chevro- let first met William C. Durant after being hired on by Buick as a racing driver and would later co-found the company with Durant in 1911. Chevrolet went on to start in four Indy 500s, retiring in all but three of them. His brothers Arthur and Gaston also made two Indy 500 starts apiece.

Last year’s Indy 500 was won by Chevrolet Team Penske driver Simon Pagenaud, who acknowledged how special it was to win the 500-mile race as a French driver in a Chevrolet. Nine drivers with Chevrolet engines have combined to win the Indy 500 a total of 11 times over the years, including Rick Mears, Emerson Fittipaldi, , Jr., Helio Castroneves, , , Will Power and, most recently, Pagenaud.

The 104th Indy 500 will go green on Sunday, August 23rd, with coverage to begin on NBCSN at 1 p.m. ET.

First 2020 Lands in Norway at $280K by Jonathan Lopez (GMAuthority.com) Thu., Aug. 13 | The 2020 Corvette offers world-beating levels of performance for surprisingly little outlay, with Chevy framing it as an everyday supercar capable of laying the smackdown on the track, while still coddling the ‘ole backside on extended trips, all without breaking the bank. However, outside the U.S., that affordable price point isn’t always guaranteed. Case in point, we have this new mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette that just popped up for sale in Norway for more than a quarter-million bucks.

Listed on the Norwegian automotive website Broom, the seller (Carfreaks AS) claims this is the first 2020 Corvette C8 offered in Norway. Pricing is set at 2,499,000 Norwegian kroner, or about $280,000 at current exchange rates.

No doubt, exclusivity definitely plays a part in justifying the outrageous asking price. Norway’s high vehicle tax also plays a part. Throw in limited availability stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic (some 2020 model-year orders have even been pushed back to the 2021 model year), and things start to make a little more sense.

Still – more than a quarter-million bucks!

Norway’s First 2020 (Continued…)

(Continued from page 13)

For now, it’s unclear if Chevy will officially export the 2020 Corvette to Norway. The country is not listed on Chevy’s European website, however, if the C8 does officially land there, the asking price is likely to be much lower. This is also unlikely to be the last 2020 Corvette on Norwegian soil. For example, a buyer could conceivably buy one in neighboring Sweden and cross the border.

Regardless, the real shocker here is this vehicle’s eye-watering price tag. Adding to the shock is that this appears to be a mid-range 2LT model without such popular options as the Z51 Performance Package. That said, there are some folks out there with way too much money to spend and a strong desire to be the first and the flashiest, so who knows, may- be the price tag is perfectly on point.

As a reminder, the 2020 Corvette is produced exclusively by GM USA at the GM Bowling Green facility in Kentucky. The C8 rides on the all-new mid-engine Y2 platform, with the mid-mounted, naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 engine equipped for motivation. On these shores, pricing starts at $59,995 for [coupes] and $67,495 for [convertibles].

Stop Order Issued for C8 Frunk by Keith Cornett (CorvetteBlogger.com) Wed., Aug. 19 | Last night we were glad to hear that GM had issued a recall notice for the 2020 Corvettes to address the “Flying Frunk” issue. But not long after we posted that news did we learn that Chevy doesn’t actually have [a] soft- ware update ready for owners to download and apply the fix. A Chevy spokesperson updated their statement with us last night regarding the recall to say that “GM is finalizing a software repair.” Unfortunately, we do not yet have a time frame on when it will be available.

But because GM has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a Recall was in play for the 2020 Corvette, they are also obligated by law to halt deliveries of any new vehicles until the remedy (i[.]e[.], soft- ware update) can be installed. To that end, a “STOP DELIVERY ORDER” has been issued to dealers and Corvette deliver- ies will have to wait until the frunk update can be applied.

We are hearing now that the Stop Delivery Order is for “certain” 2020 Corvettes” [sic] and as an example, we heard that the Rapid Blue 2020 Corvette Convertible that was delivered to Criswell Chevrolet today can, in fact, be delivered to its new owners. So it appears that the Assembly Plant has been able to update the latest shipments before they are being sent to dealerships.

We are working to find out when exactly that software fix will be ready to be applied to 2020 Corvettes. Once available, dealers will be able to apply the fix to those “certain” new Corvettes that require the update before delivery.

Editor’s Note: Here’s some fun trivia for you — the owners of the Rapid Blue HTC referred to in this article are AACC members you will likely recognize! Read more about it on page 20. Page 15 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 9 | September 2020

Another C8.R Win at VIR by CorvetteRacing.com Sat., Aug. 22 | Corvette Racing won again in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship on Saturday as Anto- nio Garcia and Jordan Taylor drove the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R to victory in the Michelin GT Challenge at Virginia International Raceway.

It’s the second win in a row for the Garcia/Taylor combo, their third of the season and the fourth consecutive win for Corvette Racing– the first time that’s happened for the team since 2014. Garcia and Taylor extended their lead in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) Driver’s Championship, as did Chevrolet in the Manufacturer’s standings.

Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner placed fourth in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C8.R, just missing making the podium again with their teammates. The result was enough to keep Gavin and Milner third in GTLM points heading to Michelin Raceway in two weeks.

Garcia, Taylor and the No. 3 Corvette will enter on one of the team’s hottest streaks in almost five years. For the sec- ond race in a row, they were the beneficiaries of late-race misfortune for the race leader but this time had to survive their own drama inside the final 20 minutes.

Taylor started the race fifth but worked his way up to second in the first 30 minutes before making his first stop at the 30-minute mark. An error in the pitlane sent the No. 3 Corvette back to fifth, but an inspired drive and bad luck for his fellow competitors meant he pitted from the lead with less than 55 minutes to make the hand-off to Garcia.

One of those unlucky cars was the No. 4 Corvette, which went off-track shortly after a restart [because] Gavin picked up debris on his tires prior to the race’s third and final restart after [a] full-course caution . . . Try[ing] as he might to clean off the pick-up and easing his way through VIR’s final corner, the Corvette still went wide and onto the grass across from pit entry.

Gavin recovered nicely and carved his way back through the slower GT Daytona cars and was behind the No. 3 Corvette in only seven laps. . . .

Meanwhile, Garcia had settled into second place but faced a 13-second gap to race leader Nick Tandy once the final GTLM pit cycle completed. The No. 3 Corvette got the break it needed with 17 minutes left when Tandy was forced to pit with a tire issue, sending Garcia to the lead.

In a race filled with uncertainty, there was still a little left for the No. 3 Corvette. Garcia reported a vibration at therear of the car from a damaged diffuser, just as Tandy went into the pitlane. It impacted the balance and handling of the Corvette, but Garcia held on to take a 3.521-second margin of victory.

2022 Z06 Twin-Cam Super-’Vette by George Fink (MotorTrend.com) Tue., Aug. 25 | If the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray's nearly 500-hp V-8 engine fails to entice you, then the forthcoming Corvette Z06's more than 600-hp V-8 ought to do the trick. And it's not just the horsepower output that's changed. The Z06's engine will be an entirely different animal from its lesser sibling, increasing performance and bringing an entirely different character to the car. Read on to find out why.

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Z06: Twin-Cam, Flat-Plane

Unlike the LT2 engine of the Stingray, the Z06's V-8 will forgo pushrod valves and a cross-plane crank for dual-overhead cams and a flat-plane crank. The resulting engine should possess the rev-happy nature and aural thrills of the mechani- cally similar V-8 in the Corvette C8.R race car.

While we originally believed the Z06 would embrace forced induction by way of two turbochargers, a source within Chevy recently informed us such a setup will be reserved for the more powerful C8 ZR1 and Zora models, the latter of which is due to embrace a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. Instead, the Z06 will pack a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8 aft of its cabin. Thanks to its race-car-like construction, the more than 600-hp engine is due to spin its crankshaft to an insane 9,000 rpm. How Chevy will quell the powerplant's vibration (an inherent issue of V-8s with flat-plane cranks) remains a mystery. Nevertheless, we're sure the bow-tie brand's learned a few tricks from the C8.R's 5.5-liter engine.

Like the Stingray, look for the Z06 to rely on an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox to send all those horses to its rear wheels. Revisions to the car's suspension and a set of sticky summer tires—that are properly wide at the rear— are sure to keep the Z06's power from overwhelming its drive wheels and chassis. 2022 Z06 (Continued…)

(Continued from page 16)

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Z06: Carbon Fiber Fever

In addition to the added power, the 2022 Corvette Z06 will welcome a number of weight-saving measures. Don't worry, creature comforts will still abound, and there's no indication the Z06 will ditch the likes of the Stingray's large digital gauge cluster or touchscreen infotainment system.

Nevertheless, look for the model to feature a number of lightweight materials for items such as the exhaust, rear wing, front splitter, and even its wheels. Specifically, the 2022 Corvette Z06 will offer buyers the option to equip it with a set of carbon-fiber wheels. While such a setup is not new (vehicles from Porsche and Ford offer carbon fiber wheels), it's still a relatively rare—and surely expensive—way for road-going cars to go about shedding mass.

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Z06: Shut Up And Take Our Money!

Although we hear the current pandemic is forcing Chevy to push back the Corvette Z06's debut, we're still hopeful the brand manages to take the wraps off the car in early 2021 and ship it to dealers before the end of the year as a 2022 model. That said, it's possible the Z06 won't arrive until sometime in 2022 as a 2023 model.

Regardless, prepare to spend a good chunk more change to get into the car. Frankly, we'll be surprised if the Z06 stick- ers for anything south of $80,000. That's pricey for a Corvette (consider the Stingray starts at $59,995). Still, compared to the 572-hp Porsche 911 Turbo, which starts at more than $170,000, the 2022 Corvette Z06 promises to be a relative steal given its performance capabilities.

GM Restructures; Corvette Moves by Keith Cornett (CorvetteBlogger.com) Thu., Aug. 27 | If there is one thing that we have learned over the 15 years that we’ve been covering Corvettes and General Motors is that the future is always in motion. The leadership of General Motors which includes Corvette own- ers Mary Barra and Mark Reuss has committed the company to an “All Electric Future” by setting up a roadmap to achieve the goal of zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.

To that end, GM has launched a number of initiatives to ramp up the production of EVs that includes a new flexible EV platform powered by GM’s Ultium battery system, a joint venture with LG Chem to mass-produce the battery cells for US production, and a strategy for greatly increasing the availability of electric vehicle charging across the U.S. and Cana- da.

GM Restructure (Continued...)

(Continued from page 17)

Following the successful launch of the C8 Corvette program, GM announced today a restructuring program that shifts the Corvette Engineering team from the “Global Products Program” to the “Autonomous and Electric Vehicles Pro- gram.”

From what we have gathered, Executive Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter will continue to lead the Corvette Engi- neering group but he will now be reporting to Ken Morris, GM Vice President of Autonomous and Electric Vehicle Pro- grams. Ed Piatek, who was the Chief Engineer of Corvette has been moved to a new role as Chief Engineer of Future EV Product, which then opens the door for Josh Holder to be promoted to Chief Engineer of Corvette. (Yes, we know that that GM’s job titles are sometimes redundant.)

Here is a statement from Ken Morris on the Corvette move:

“General Motors is committed to an all-electric future. I’m excited to be putting the team that redefined supercar per- formance, design and attainability in key roles to help us integrate and execute our EVs to those same high standards.”

While we’ve seen some takes on this that assumes the Corvette team will be shifting to work exclusively on EVs, that isn’t the case as the Corvette Team will still have the same personnel like Tadge and Josh who are focused on creating the future varients [sic] of the C8 Corvette.

General Motors has made it clear that the “future is electric” with the company offering 20 new EVs for sale by 2023. GM has also committed to spending $20 billion between now and 2025 on EV Development. Earlier this month Cadillac launched their new electric luxury SUV called the Lyriq and GMC will be bringing back the Hummer as an electric vehi- cle that will have 1,000 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 3 seconds.

What we see happening is that the Autonomous and EV Programs will now have greater access to the “high perfor- mance” brain trust that designed and built the mid-engine Corvette, and the Corvette Engineering teams having greater access to those working with electric motors and battery storage systems.

It’s been somewhat of an open secret that the Corvette team is working to bring hybrid performance to the Corvettes, which could see electric motors installed on the front wheels to provide greater launch abilities with the application of all-wheel-drive. And with the recent renewal of the “E-Ray” trademark, there has always been the rumor of a future Corvette that is totally electric.

I do believe this will end up being a good move for the Corvette Engineering team as they are going to where the “action is” within the company. I can already hear some of the howls from the purists out there and yes, we get the fact that driving a future electric Corvette might not be the same our internal combustion-powered models of today. But what if they are better? Page 19 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 9 | September 2020

2020 Corvettes at Carlisle Thu.-Sun., Aug. 27-30 | Marty Hegyi returned to his happy place — namely, Corvettes at Carlisle. This annual Cor- vette event is only a 100-minute drive from Allentown and features thousands of Corvettes representing all generations of America’s classic sports car.

The weather was a bit “iffy” with remnants of Hurricane Laura (no pun intended to Mrs. Hegyi) working her way north from the Gulf of Mexico. Well, the weather was fast-moving — just like the Corvettes seeking cover. Social distancing rules were in place, but COVID-19 left it’s mark with decreased attendance and some key exhibitors switching to online presentations (GM Engineering, specifically).

Two club cars won Celebrity Choice Awards — Scott & Jeanette Marakovits(‘13 Cpe) and Al & Andrea Fuller (‘20 HTC).

Quite a few members made their annual pilgrimage and many are posting photos on their Facebook pages. These were shared by Laura (“Hurricane”) Hegyi:

AACC’s 2020 Convertible at Carlisle by Keith Cornett (CorvetteBlogger.com) Fri., Aug. 28 | Although we couldn’t make the trip this year, CorvetteBlogger contributor Jeremy Welborn was in Pennsylvania on Thursday for opening day of the annual Corvettes at Carlisle show. After a quick stop by the Ron Fel- lows/Spring Mountain tent to say hi to the group of friends there that also included his Chevy salesman Mike Furman, Jeremy tracks down Al and Andrea Fuller to check out their brand new 2020 Corvette Convertible[.]

We first saw this car just a week ago as it was one of the very first C8 convertibles to reach the dealership. Somehow it was excluded from the Stop Delivery Order so it was able to be delivered to its new owners who are now proudly showing off the car.

Jeremy asks Al about his new HTC Corvette and how it was spec’d out. Al explains that after spending countless hours in the configurator, he opted for the Rapid Blue exterior with a black roof and nacelles. Al explains his build in that he wanted a lot of the carbon flash, but only above the beltline. So he opted for the body-colored vents and boomerang while also adding the black mirror caps and Z51 wing, and then finished off the look with the Spectra Gray Trident Wheels.

This car has a documented factory error in that the grill on the rear deck of the car was also supposed to be body- colored with the other vents, but the car was delivered with the carbon flash vent. GM offered to make things right by switching out the grill with a Rapid Blue version, but Al says it makes the car a unique “1 of 1” and has decided to keep it as-is.

Following the walk-around, Al demonstrates the operation of the top by first raising it and then Jeremy lowered the top again, and utilizing the button on the key fob, he stopped the process while the rear deck was raised to expose the un- dertray/engine cover. We can see where the rubber caps are that provide access to filling the LT2’s engine fluids. Final- ly, Jeremy shows from inside the car the process of raising the roof using the button on the door as well as the ability to raise and lower the rear window.

Thanks Jeremy and Al for sharing the details on this great looking (and unique) 2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible!

NCM Ambassador’s Corner by Al Fuller (‘20) Hello Everyone – welcome to September! As the “season” starts to wind down, I feel like it never even really got started. 2020 will not be a year remembered fondly by most….I got an eye exam recently, and my eye doctor said “this was supposed to be OUR year (2020- get it?) – and instead we got this!” I’m staying focused on the positive things that happened this year, and the fact that events have brought many of us closer to- gether and made us more appreciative of the blessings that are our families and friends. I wish everyone a great fall season, and hope for a vastly improved 2021 landscape for Corvette activities. Since penning my August update, so much has happened – we’ve had club members win a Corvette through the NCM raffle program – real people actually do win these cars! Congratulations Jim & Donna! Andrea & I have also been blessed to take delivery of the very first “retail sold” C8 HTC (Hard Top Convertible) anywhere. I can’t fully explain how that happened, but we are thrilled we had the car in time to display it at Carlisle and answer (almost non-stop) questions. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or comments on this incredible machine. AACC is the first club anywhere to have both C8 coupes and a convertible! And speaking of Carlisle, kudos to Lance Miller, Bill Miller, Jodi Felix-Morrison and all the Carlisle Events staff for an incredible event! I was able to speak with Lance, and he was incredibly thankful for all the support shown by the Corvette world, including AACC. He indicated he found a sense of normalcy during the weekend that he (and many of us) desperately needed. While the event was different in many, many ways – there was a tremendous sense of comradery and positive energy amongst those who were there. More than any other year, the literally hundreds of people I spoke with were positive, and enthusiastic. As expected, a great time to experience all the many “flavors” of Corvette; and interact (socially distant) with others in our hobby. The GM Team was not on- site, but Tadge and Harlan did provide virtual updates on both Friday and Saturday; and both expressed how much they missed the opportunity to interact with everyone in person. I know of no other vehicle make/model/manufacturer that has this sort of access to the folks who actually design, build, and race the cars, and this level of interaction with them. Hopefully we continue to appreciate it. I also believe AACC pulled down some Celebrity Choice Awards while there. One quick story, further proof of what “Corvette Family” means — some friends were driving up in their C7 from Georgia to attend the event, and experienced multiple overheating issues along the way. Rather than turn around and go home, they stuck it out and continued the journey. They had to have the car flat-bedded the last 100 mi. to the Fairgrounds. Another friend reached out to Lance, who reached out to Paul Koerner (“The Corvette Mechanic” who presents seminars at the event). Paul agreed to diagnose and possi- bly repair the car while on-site. It ended up being a thermostat, which was replaced and fixed the issue; but the willingness of every- one to help is another sign of what makes Corvette people the best. Now, let’s look forward – while many think of Carlisle as indicating the season is over, I want to remind everyone about the NCM sponsored Corvette Racing Event at the AACA Museum in Hershey. Andrea and I have attended the last 3 years, and this is an in- credible event. Attendance is limited, but allows you to have dinner and interact with both C8R driver Tommy Milner and Corvette Racing Program Manager Doug Fehan in a less crowded situation where you can ask questions, get lots of behind the scenes insights about the racing program, and hear some first hand stories you will not hear in social or broadcast media. Michelin and Mobil 1 folks are there as well. If you go, ask Doug or Tommy about “Red 11.” Details for this October event can be found on the NCM website. This year the event also includes the (optional) opportunity to tour the Harley Davidson manufacturing plant. Finally, a few updates on the NCM — the Anniversary Celebration is upcoming, Labor Day weekend, and accessible both in-person and virtually. I will be participating virtually, and keeping my fingers crossed that our newsletter and web site submissions are looked upon favorably by the NCM Team. Details next month. Please continue your support of the NCM through raffle ticket pur- chases, store purchases, donations, and possibly even visiting. — even just by sharing positive thoughts and support options with our friends. The NCM continues to be recognized as the world class automotive facility that it is. My thanks to all for your time and attention, and kindly remember to “Save The Wave”!
