The “Baseball Rule” Faces an Interesting Test One of the many beauties of baseball, affectionately known as “America’s pastime,” is the ability for people to come to the stadium and become ingrained in the action and get the chance to interact with their heroes. Going to a baseball game, as opposed to going to most other sporting events, truly gives a fan the opportunity to take part in the action. However, this can come at a steep price as foul balls enter the stands at alarming speeds and occasionally strike spectators. According to a recent study, approximately 1,750 people get hurt each year by batted 1 balls at Major League Baseball (MLB) games, which adds up to twice every three games. The 2015 MLB season featured many serious incidents that shed light on the issue of 2 spectator protection. This has led to heated debates among the media, fans, and even players and 3 managers as to what should be done to combat this issue. Currently, there is a pending class action lawsuit against Major League Baseball (“MLB”). For your convenience, the Learning Goals and Academic Expectations are listed within the curriculum. Regardless of the activity, the procedures and methods can easily be substituted to fit your appropriate grade level. This curriculum has been organized with the following in mind: . Educators tailor their lesson plans to meet the needs of their students. Educators may use bits and pieces of a lesson plan to create their own lesson plans. Educators have the flexibility to use this curriculum to integrate ideas into current studies. This curriculum guide has been divided into four basic areas of study: MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, and LANGUAGE ARTS. Within each of these four areas of study, we have further divided them into two distinct sub-headings: FOCUSED LESSON PLANS and EXTENDED IDEAS. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31). -

At the level of language, contact allows English to influence Spanish, especially in the area of vocabulary, which Spanish assimilates and adapts according to its own peculiar structures. Baseball, which was invented in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century, was introduced into Spanish America about thirty or forty years later. -

The Indians' longtime driver knows that when he pulls out of Progressive Field, his truck emblazoned with Cleveland's logo on the trailer packed to the gills with baseball equipment and more, his journey to Arizona marks the beginning of the Tribe's journey through the season. "I like being a part of it," Fisher said. "I really do." On Friday morning, Fisher and his crew were busy in the bowels of the ballpark, stuffing a pair of 53-foot trucks with items that the Indians require for Spring Training. The trucks were set to embark on the three-day trek to Goodyear, Ariz., where the Tribe's staff is aiming to unload the semis on Tuesday to help the players get started out in the desert. The trucks are filled with bikes, weight-room equipment, personal belongings of players and staff, sunflower seeds, bottled water and much more. There was one pallet of gum, which may or may not have been only for Cleveland manager Terry Francona. When the trucks were nearly full, Francona did have one very important item rolled into the back of one of the trailers. "We need the scooter!" yelled an Indians clubhouse worker. A few minutes later, another team employee zipped through the tunnel on Tito's black moped. Things have changed a lot for the Tribe's clubhouse crew since the days when the team trained in Winter Haven, Fla. -

Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it? Perhaps the absence of a game clock in baseball, unlike other major sports, creates the illusion that anything is possible, and in particular that one’s team can overcome even the largest of deficits, even late in the game. And, indeed, significant comebacks from behind are possible, but are so unlikely that in some cases they’re considered to be historic. For instance, in the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies on June 8, 1989 the Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Pirates’ radio broadcaster, Jim Rooker, proclaimed that if the Phillies were to come back from the 10-run deficit he would “walk home”.
