O ’ N e i l | 1 The importance of Patronage during the Premature Reformation: Comparison of John Wyclif and Jan Hus By James O’Neil History 499 Senior Seminar June 3rd, 2013 Primary Reader: Dr. Alaric Trousdale Secondary Reader: Dr. Patricia Goldsworthy-Bishop O ’ N e i l | 2 John Wyclif and Jan Hus were two theologians that took a vested interest in the way that the Christian religion was practiced. They interpreted the Christian religion directly in relation to the scripture, and they believed that good Christians should emulate Christ in every aspect of their life. Although their theology caused them to be eventually labeled as heretics Wyclif and Hus saw themselves as reformers. A primary reason behind the Catholic Church labeling of Wyclif and Hus as heretical had to do with their willingness to question the status quo.
