  • Fairs and Exhibitions in China 2015
Fairs and Exhibitions in China 2015 Preface Although China became the first trading country in the world in 2013, there was still a big gap from the target of a “trading power” with high quality and technology as well as strong competitiveness and creativity. Currently, China’s economy still faces many difficulties and challenges, including the big pressure of economic downturn and the pains of structural adjustment. In the future, the growth rate of world’s economy may show a slight rise, but it is difficult to significantly change the trend of recovery weakness. In the “new normal” context that China’s economic growth declines from a high speed to a middle-high speed, economic structure is constantly optimized and upgraded, and the element-driven and investment-driven mode turns into innovation-driven mode, professional economic and trading exhibitions, as an effective channel of optimizing industrial structure, encouraging scientific and technological innovation, exploiting trade and investment markets, and promoting balanced development between export and trade, should catch the opportunity to help China’s enterprises to realize transformation and upgrade, push up economic development, enhance economic quality and efficiency, and cultivate new advantages in international competitiveness. China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) has held and participated in economic and trade exhibitions around the world since 60 years ago. Since the reform and opening-up, especially when China entered into WTO, CCPIT has given full play to its advantages to provide management and other services for overall, coordinated and sustainable development of China’s exhibition economy, and put up an effective platform for extensive exhibition organizers and exhibitors to carry out international exchange and economic and trade cooperation, thus making its contributions to the prosperous development of China’s exhibition industry.

  • Speaking Through the Branches: the Work of Sherry Owens by Bradley Sumrall
June 2017 Page 1 of 3 Speaking Through the Branches: The Work of Sherry Owens By Bradley Sumrall Sherry Owens, Waterhole, 2017, crepe myrtle, dye and wax, 24 x 36 x 36 inches, loan courtesy of the artist, photography by Harrison Evans Photography, Dallas, Texas The first time I walked into Sherry Owens’ studio, I was overwhelmed by the space. It was as if I had stepped into a petrified bramble, a nest of wooden bones, a temple for a tree goddess. Completely surrounded by pieces of crepe myrtle – bound, piled, whittled, waxed and stained – I felt I had stepped inside of a Sherry Owens sculpture, and I had no desire to leave. Artists through the ages have looked at a piece of wood and seen something within, something that they feel needs to be brought forth by the artist’s hand. From ancient African and Asian cultures into the New World, root carving has been practiced throughout history. In the American South, there is a strong tradition of vernacular art based in this animistic practice of exposing the spirit within the wood, including artists like Ralph Griffin, Thornton Dial, Bessie Harvey and Jesse James Aaron. “Trees is soul June 2017 Page 2 of 3 people to me,” said Bessie Harvey. “Maybe not to other people, but I have watched trees when they pray, and I have watched them shout, and sometimes, they give thanks slowly and quietly.”1 These artists approached the medium with reverence, and Owens shares that spiritual view of nature. She brings her own contemporary aesthetic, however, to the process – a post-minimalist aesthetic tied to the Texas landscape and environmental concerns.

This paper uses empirical evidence from an antique furniture manufacturing cluster in Xianyou, Fujian Province, in southeastern China, to examine the growth trajectory of the knowledge learning system of an antique furniture manufacturing cluster. It appears that the apprentice-based learning system is crucial during early stages of the cluster evolution, but later becomes complemented and relatively substituted by the role of both local governments and focal outsiders. This finding addresses the context of economic transformation and provides empirical insights into knowledge acquisition in apprentice-based clusters to question the rationality based on European and North American cases, and to provide a broader perspective for policy makers to trigger and sustain the development of apprentice-based clusters.

  • Guan Xiao: Basic Logic
www.antenna-space.com Guan Xiao: Basic Logic October 9–November 27, 2015 Opening reception: Friday, October 9, 5–7 pm The artistic motive of Guan Xiao revolves around ways of seeing affected by the digital regime of image circulation. Through which, she endeavors to expand the cognitive and aesthetic horizon of identity politics via her installation and video works. In Guan’s first solo exhibition in the Antenna Space, Basic Logic showcases works made in recent two years, including six brand new sculptures and installations, as well as a premiere of her two latest video works in mainland China. Upon entering the gallery space, the spectators will find themselves in an allure distinctively spiral, and rhythmic, put in place by Hidden Track and Action. The videos utilize the downloaded clips from various sources, choreographing the images of music players, sculptural portraits, animals and outdoor sceneries according to their shared implicit cadence. A new set of installations, entitled Documentary: From National Geographic to BBC is located at the center of the space. Behind it, the 4S Prequel, which was engendered from a similar line of thoughts. (In colloquial Chinese, 4S shop refers to the authorized car shops.) They oversee the exhibition against their camouflaged screens. The screens serve in her oeuvre as a symbolic tool for the use of anti-identification. It is also as a fashionable icon deployed as backdrop for her absurd sculptures that collages carved roots with various found objects. With a sense of anachronism, the artist has adapted this traditional Chinese root carving into her conceptual framework.

In previous bamboo-related studies, the principal investigations concentrated in workmanship, daily necessity, manufacture process, and technique mostly rather than design thinking with respect to the workmanship and utensils. In recent years, the green and environment-friendly design thinking, which helps make many materials reduced in the amount of production, recycled, and reclaimed, emerges due to eco-awareness and resource recycling.Discovered in the design source and being one original basic pattern or symbol of the green design concept, the design thinking of “unwasted usage” has its principal implication and strategic thinking to emphasize collective
