At the centre of the Route Charlemagne is the former palace complex of Charlemagne, with the Katschhof, the Town Hall and the Cathedral still bearing witness today of a site that formed the focal point of the first empire of truly European proportions. Aachen is a historical town, a centre of science and learning, and a European city whose story can be seen as a history of Europe. This story, along with other major themes like religion, power, economy and media, are all reflected and explored in places like the Cathedral and the Town Hall, the International Newspaper Museum, the Grashaus, Haus Löwenstein, the Couven-Museum, the Axis of Science, the SuperC of the RWTH Aachen University and the Elisenbrunnen. The central starting point of the Route Charlemagne is the Centre Charlemagne, the new city museum located on the Katschhof between the Town Hall and the Cathedral. -

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media. -

The present study is an attempt to fe-assess the poem in its twel fth century context sa that the reader may be able to visu:l1 ise the story as the author conceived it and as it wO'Jld have been received by its contemporary audience, but it must not be considered as a comprehensive commentary on the poem. That would be impossible in the sp.Jce >:lvoiloble. It is merely a discussion on so:ne points raised by the text and on a few aspects of CO:1- temporary Cornish history which may explain the stcxy. Beroul's romance belongs to the second half of the twel fth century when literacy was rare o'Jtside clerical circles and story-telling for secular entertainment was largely in the hands of minstrels. The te rm 'minstrel' has been loosely used to cover a wide range of persons. Some were from the upper classes, men who, for a variety of reasons of health, wealth, 0 :- tempera ment, preferred the role of entertainer to the more usual profession of knight at--arms, and who travelled from one baronial home to :mother, bringing news and entertainment to brighten the 10"'\3 dark hours of winter . -

Uwagi ogólne Zestaw materiałów opatrzony wspólnym tytułem King Arthur and Medieval Knights jest adresowany do studentów uzupełniających studiów magisterskich na kierun- kach humanistycznych. Przedstawione ćwiczenia mogą być wykorzystane do pracy z grupami studentów filologii, kulturoznawstwa, historii i innych kierunków hu- manistycznych jako materiał przedstawiający kulturę Wielkiej Brytanii. 2. Poziom zaawansowania: B2+/C1 3. Czas trwania opisanych ćwiczeń Ćwiczenia zaprezentowane w tym artykule są przeznaczone na trzy lub cztery jednostki lekcyjne po 90 minut każda. Czas trwania został ustalony na podstawie doświadcze- nia wynikającego z pracy nad poniższymi ćwiczeniami w grupach na poziomie B2+. 4. Uwagi i sugestie Materiały King Arthur and Medieval Knights obejmują pięć tekstów tematycznych z ćwiczeniami oraz dwie audycje z ćwiczeniami na rozwijanie umiejętności słucha- nia. Przewidziane są tu zadania na interakcję student–nauczyciel, student–student oraz na pracę indywidualną. Ćwiczenia w zależności od poziomu grupy, stopnia 182 IV. O HISTORII I KULTURZE zaangażowania studentów w zajęcia i kierunku mogą być odpowiednio zmodyfiko- wane. Teksty tu zamieszczone możemy czytać i omawiać na zajęciach (zwłaszcza z grupami mniej zaawansowanymi językowo, tak by studenci się nie zniechęcili stopniem trudności) lub część przedstawionych ćwiczeń zadać jako pracę domo- wą, jeżeli nie chcemy poświęcać zbyt dużo czasu na zajęciach. -

From Charlemagne to Hitler: The Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and its Symbolism Dagmar Paulus (University College London) [email protected] 2 The fabled Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire is a striking visual image of political power whose symbolism influenced political discourse in the German-speaking lands over centuries. Together with other artefacts such as the Holy Lance or the Imperial Orb and Sword, the crown was part of the so-called Imperial Regalia, a collection of sacred objects that connotated royal authority and which were used at the coronations of kings and emperors during the Middle Ages and beyond. But even after the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the crown remained a powerful political symbol. In Germany, it was seen as the very embodiment of the Reichsidee, the concept or notion of the German Empire, which shaped the political landscape of Germany right up to National Socialism. In this paper, I will first present the crown itself as well as the political and religious connotations it carries. I will then move on to demonstrate how its symbolism was appropriated during the Second German Empire from 1871 onwards, and later by the Nazis in the so-called Third Reich, in order to legitimise political authority. I The crown, as part of the Regalia, had a symbolic and representational function that can be difficult for us to imagine today. On the one hand, it stood of course for royal authority. During coronations, the Regalia marked and established the transfer of authority from one ruler to his successor, ensuring continuity amidst the change that took place. -

Aachen, Germany Marian Shrines Aachen Cathedral Aachen cathedral is the oldest cathedral of northern Europe. The oldest part, the octagon, beeing the palace chapel of Charles-the-Great was built about 790-800 AD in the Carolingian style. The church has been consecrated in honour of the Virgin Mary. Main attraction for pilgrims was the Miraculous Madonna “Our Lady Mary Emperor of Aachen” [6]. The statue now is positioned in the octagon right of the altar. In a private revelation of a soul in the region of Aachen end of the 20th Century, the following prayer was given together with a promise of Jesus. The prayer itself has the authorization of the past as well as the present Bishop of Aachen [10]: Ave Maria, Empress, Help of Christians pray for the Diocese consecrated you, especially for the bishop, all Priests and devotees and especially for a Christian Europe. Jesus' promise to the prayer "Ave Maria, Empress, Help of Christians!": "This prayer is precious. The more it is prayed, the more will shine my light on Aachen and Europe. This prayer is like a golden key that opens my and my mother’s heart and from there the rays of My grace and Her agency can come freely to you. The more and more this prayer is prayed, the more the darkness of Europe loses ground! And that because Aachen is and remains the intellectual point, from where I will renew the world in me. And by my mother, the help of the entire Christendom, yes indeed by the heavenly empress of the world! Pray this prayer and let it all pray as often as possible! World and Church need this prayer from Aachen, the key to the light! " The Aachen cathedral also is often called the “Imperial Cathedral” (in German: Kaiserdom). -

1 RONALD HUTTON The early Arthur: history and myth For anybody concerned with the origins of the Arthurian legend, one literary work should represent the point of embarkation: the Historia Brittonum or History of the British . It is both the earliest clearly dated text to refer to Arthur, and the one upon which most efforts to locate and identify a histor- ical fi gure behind the name have been based. From it, three different routes of enquiry proceed, which may be characterised as the textual, the folkloric and the archaeological, and each of these will now be followed in turn. The Arthur of literature Any pursuit of Arthur through written texts needs to begin with the Historia itself; and thanks primarily to the researches of David Dumville and Nicholas Higham, we now know more or less exactly when and why it was produced in its present form. It was completed in Gwynedd, the north-western king- dom of Wales, at the behest of its monarch, Merfyn, during the year 830. Merfyn was no ordinary Welsh ruler of the age, but an able and ruthless newcomer, an adventurer who had just planted himself and his dynasty on the throne of Gwynedd, and had ambitions to lead all the Welsh. As such, he sponsored something that nobody had apparently written before: a com- plete history of the Welsh people. To suit Merfyn’s ambitions for them, and for himself, it represented the Welsh as the natural and rightful owners of all Britain: pious, warlike and gallant folk who had lost control of most of their land to the invading English, because of a mixture of treachery and overwhelming numbers on the part of the invaders. -

Hermes We were taught that our civilization stemmed from classical and Christian roots: Greco-Roman and Judeo- Christian, and that the classical elements had been largely lost until the rediscovery known as the Renaissance. But, now that the world is smaller, communication easier, organized religion more relaxed and scholarly exchange more widespread, our common ground with the Arabian tradition is being recognized. Medieval culture is, in fact, Greek, Latin, and Arab (italics mine). E.L. Ranelagh Throughout the bulk of the Arthurian literary tradition, romancers, novelists, poets, and historians of King Arthur and his Knights have relegated the world’s medieval games to that of the European chessboard. This Eurocentric mentality—that is unfortunately not uncharacteristic of an astounding number of western medievalists— has (un)intentionally participated in the widening of the cultural gaps between Islam and the West. Such an inflexible essentialism might debunk many medievalists’ assumptions of “the uncontested humanism and universalism of the Arthurian tradition. What is meant here is that any liberal humanization of the Arthurian literature from a western critical and cultural standpoint cannot be divorced from what Maria Rosa Menocal aptly labels as “the myth of westerness in medieval literary historiography”(1). This becomes particularity significant if one, for instance, explores the cultural and literary reception of the Arthurian text in the very land of the “other” of King Arthur and his Knights, that is to say, the lands of the “Saracens”. i Hermes: King Arthur in the Land of the Saracens.
