    collection مجمـــــــــــــــــــــــــوعة ســــــــــــــــــــــــــــرادار The “Lebanese” Landscape and Its (Trans)Historical Ideal | by Natasha Gasparian and Angela Harutyunyan This essay engages with the problematic of landscape painting as an art historical genre in modern and contemporary Lebanese art, particularly in the works of Georges Daoud Corm, Boris Novikoff and Daniele Genadry represented in the Saradar Collection. In terms of the constitution of the landscape as a fine arts genre in Lebanon in the twen- tieth century, this essay situates its development as a belated response to the ideals of the eighteenth-century European Enlightenment humanism and anti-Enlightenment Romanticism. By doing this, the essay considers the ways in which the genre acts as a conduit for topographically grounding the nation in modernity, belatedly, while at the same time articulating the nation form as an ahistorical and natural formation. Further, we trace the afterlife of the genre in the post-medium condition when painting is no longer a privileged medium and landscape is conceived as an empirical site that secures the ideal of the coherent and self-sufficient human(ist) subject. In art history, the advent of landscape painting as an independent genre is subject to diverging views of nature by the humanists and romantic counter-humanists of the Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment periods. While humanism and Romanticism establish conflicting conceptualizations of the world and nature, and are traditionally regarded to belong to separate periods (with the advent of humanism being attributed to the Renaissance; and Romanticism to post-Enlightenment), nonetheless they are complementary; Romanticism is inextricable from the Enlightenment’s Janus-faced contradictions.

Lovely murals, showing the Phoenicians building the first boats of Cedar; the hill scenes and the places famous in Scripture, slowed our steps and smooth-edged the fuss and fury that comes into the hearts of Marsh-ians. Something in the ageless stare of the white marble statues of the ancient heroes of Lebanon dimmed the immediate greatness of the Great. […] It came to pass, and this was late in the afternoon, that we stood before the Cedars of Lebanon. “These cedars,” said the written legend, “felled by heavy snows, are from the 480 surviving cedar trees of Lebanon, some of which date back to Solomon’s time, 3000 years ago.” We saw them, then as through a mist, and imagination carried us completely out of the World of Tomorrow.     MAVCOR Journal (mavcor.yale.edu) Mural Paintings, Church of the Summer Residence of the Maronite Patriarch, Diman Alessandra Amin Saliba Douiahy, Mural Paintings at the Church of the Summer Residence of the Maronite Patriarch, Diman, late 1930s Most routes through Mount Lebanon are winding and narrow, lined by oak, cedar, and cypress trees and roamed by the occasional sheep. The road to Our Lady of Diman is no exception and the church’s spacious parking lot seems to emerge out of nowhere. The stately edifice overlooks the Qadisha Valley, known for both its natural beauty and its religious significance to Lebanese Christians, especially Maronite Catholics. The imposing architecture and impressive location of the church befit its purpose. Since its construction around the turn of the twentieth century, it has served as the summer residence of the Maronite Catholic Patriarch.1 The prestige of the building is everywhere apparent: in the inlaid marble floor, in the gold and blue panes of the stained-glass windows. The church’s most remarkable feature, however, is the ceiling over its nave, with frescoes completed in the late 1930s by celebrated Lebanese painter Saliba Douaihy (1913-1994). These scenes are divided by wooden molding (actual and trompe-l’oeil) and arranged in three horizontal registers, flanked on either end by a single painting.     1 ART EDUCATION IN LEBANON by BUSHRA FAKHOURY Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Institute of Education University of London 1983 AB ST RACT This study is concerned with the examination and investigation of facts and documents relating to past and present provisions for the teaching of art and design in the Republic of Lebanon. It encompasses nursery, elementary, secondary and higher grades of schooling and includes initial evaluation of the present art syllabus. The study will be accompanied by a survey of the current state of art and design practice in Lebanon, as set against the historical background and cultural heritage of the country. The effect of recent political events on education will be appraised. From the material a number of inferences will be drawn concerning the needs and priorities of art and design education in Lebanon. The study concludes with proposals for reorganising and updating the art syllabus. In the conclusion a number of recommendations will be made to assist with the diffusion and dissemination of art education throughout the country.
