Parent Newsletter St. Margaret Mary School, as a mission of the parish, provides a quality education within a Catholic, Christian atmosphere through a caring holistic approach that prepares students for spiritual growth, social responsibility, and academic success. School web site: www.smms-chino.org 12/7/15 Dear Parents, As we enter the last two weeks before our Christmas break, please make sure to read all communications from your child’s teacher(s) and me! These two weeks are packed with many activities. Did You Know? The pope does not live in Italy; he lives in Vatican City, which is a county within Italy. Prayer Request- As you know our neighboring city was hit with great tragedy on Wednesday. There are many families who are trying to deal with the loss of their loved ones, especially a family from a school in our Diocese. Trenna Meins, the principal from Sacred Heart Rancho Cucamonga lost her husband in this great tragedy. As a community and as brother's and sister's of our Lord I ask your help during this very difficult time. You may have received or will be receiving and email from your child's teacher asking every student to bring in $1.00 by Tuesday, December 8th. Together with the other schools in the Diocese, we will purchase scrip to help her and her family get through this troubling time. Additionally, each class will make prayer cards for her girls. Please keep Trenna and her family in your prayers. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know. Thank you for your support. Immaculate Conception Mass- The school will celebrate Mass tomorrow, December 8 at 8:15am. Full Drees is required! Please send your child with a non-perishable food item. All food collected will be given to the Chino Neighborhood House. K-4 PE Days- Due to Mass, Kindergarten through fourth grade will NOT have PE on Tuesday. Instead, they will have PE on Thursday and Friday this week. Community Mass- Thank you to all of our families who attended Mass on Sunday. It was very nice seeing so many of our students in attendance. Attached is simply a guide for your convenience. Please shop early to avoid the rush!! T-Dap- Current 6th graders will need proof of T-dap booster shot before entering 7th grade. April 29th, 2016 DISCERN platform reveals: • Over 80% overlap between Chipotle and Panera in all regions within a 5-mile trade area • Other potential dining alternative beneficiaries from Chipotle challenges Chipotle Mexican Grill’s recent issues with food contamination and the resultant heavy losses of customers are widely known and do not appear to have ended judging by its first quarter earnings release. In its April 26 release Chipotle reported another significant decline in its same-store sales of 29.7%. Conversely, Panera reported a 6.2% increase for the same fiscal period. Key Takeaway As Chart 1 illustrates there appears to be a meaningful correlation between the trend of Chipotle’s same-store sales and Panera’s as Chipotle’s food contamination issues surfaced. This would largely be attributable to the high competition intensity between the chains as the illustrations below show. Chart 1. Illustration 1, which is from DISCERN’s database of retailer and restaurant locations, quantifies to what extent Chipotle and Panera overlap within their respective five mile trade area geographies. The data shows that Chipotle and Panera compete within the same five mile trade area in 86% of the total trade areas, a significant amount of restaurant overlap for 2 large competitors within the fast casual restaurant sector.

  • China Naval Modernization: Implications for U.S. Navy Capabilities — Background and Issues for Congress
Order Code RL33153 China Naval Modernization: Implications for U.S. Navy Capabilities — Background and Issues for Congress Updated September 12, 2008 Ronald O’Rourke Specialist in Naval Affairs Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division China Naval Modernization: Implications for U.S. Navy Capabilities — Background and Issues for Congress Summary Concern has grown in Congress and elsewhere since the 1990s about China’s military modernization. Several of the U.S. Navy’s most expensive acquisition programs, as well as Navy initiatives for homeporting ships and for training sailors, are for developing or maintaining capabilities that could be useful or critical in countering improved Chinese maritime military capabilities in coming years. The issue for Congress addressed in this report is: How should China’s military modernization be factored into decisions about U.S. Navy programs? Several elements of China’s military modernization have potential implications for future required U.S. Navy capabilities. These include theater-range ballistic missiles (TBMs), land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs), anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), land-based aircraft, naval mines, submarines, surface combatants, amphibious ships, nuclear weapons, and possibly high-power microwave (HPM) devices. China’s naval limitations or weaknesses include capabilities for operating in waters more distant from China, joint operations, C4ISR (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance), long-range surveillance and targeting systems, anti-air warfare (AAW), antisubmarine warfare (ASW), mine countermeasures (MCM), and shipbuilding dependence on foreign suppliers. Observers believe a near-term focus of China’s military modernization is to field a force that can succeed in a short-duration conflict with Taiwan and act as an anti- access force to deter U.S.

  • Agenda Item 7
Item Number: AGENDA ITEM 7 TO: CITY COUNCIL Submitted By: Douglas D. Dumhart FROM: CITY MANAGER Community Development Director Meeting Date: Subject: Conceptual Review of a Proposal for the July 19, 2011 Development of a Chase Bank at 5962 La Palma Avenue RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council conceptually approve a proposal for the development of a Chase Bank at 5962 La Palma Avenue and direct staff to draft a Zoning Code Text Amendment and Development Agreement for further consideration. SUMMARY: The City has received a letter from Studley, the real estate brokerage firm representing the property owner at 5962 La Palma Avenue, requesting that the City consider the development of a JP Morgan Chase Bank on their property. The letter is provided as Attachment 1 to this report. The site is located at the southwest corner of Valley View Street and La Palma Avenue and has been vacant for over 10 years. Late last year, the subject parcel was rezoned from Neighborhood Commercial (NC) to Planned Neighborhood Development (PND) land use designation, which prohibits financial institutions and banks. The Broker has stated that they have exhausted attempts to find end users for his client’s property that are consistent with the goals of the new PND Zone and that meet the needs of his client. They have a ground lease offer from Chase to develop a free-standing bank. The financial institution use alone does not meet the requirements in the PND Zoning District to develop the commercial corner with retail uses that are lacking in the community.

James A. Collins UCLA ’50 Oxford Cup Roll No. 061 While others may consider their golden years a time for quiet contemplation or general relaxation, James A. Collins, UCLA ’50, serves as the epitome of philanthropy at age 78. Collins, who retired in Aug. 1999 as chairman of Worldwide Restaurant Concepts, Inc., is having the time of his life. The quintessential storyteller, Collins can spend hours recounting tales of his childhood, his days in the U.S. Navy, college experiences at Miami University and UCLA, and his colorful journey through the maze of fast-food service. Through all of his experiences, Collins claims that many of his accom- plishments are due to good fortune. “Being in the right place at the right time has been a really big part of my success,” he explains. “The other parts are hard work and enthusiasm.” Collins attributes his strong work ethic to his father, while clearly indicating that his spirit comes from his mother. After passing his Naval exam, Collins was called for service in August of 1944. Following boot camp in Jacksonville, Fla., his next stop was Norman, Okla., where he started in the V-6 program. He passed the V-5 exam and moved on to Miami University in the fall of 1945, where he pledged the Alpha chapter. Collins was discharged from the Navy in July 1946 and enrolled at UCLA the following fall to be closer to home. As UCLA did not have a civil engineering degree at the time, Collins and five of his friends trans- ferred to California-Berkeley in the fall of 1949.
