They believe this blue­ print was devised unconsciously by an industrial society and its present course is unalterable unless social and psychological attitudes are changed. According to Reich, the industrial society has produced three categories of conscious awareness. Each level of awareness is highly impressionistic and arbitrary, and because each type of consciousness is a construct, no real individual is expected to exhibit all the types of characteristic consciousness. The first level, known as Consciousness I, was formed in the nineteenth century. It may be described as the "traditional outlook of the American farmer, small businessman, and worker who is trying to get ahead,It does not accept the reality of an interdependent society and believes in a narrow, rugged individualism. The second level, Consciousness II, developed in the first ^Charles A, Reich, The Greening of America, (New lorki Bantam Books, 1971)i P, 16, 1 2 half of this century and is characterized by the individual who 2 "represents the values of an organizational society," This type believes in the Corporate State and derives happiness from its material rewards. There is a belief in rationality, planning by experts, and attending reform. Consciousness III is the new emerging generation which rejects what the technological society stands for. This type is difficult to categorize. It is this third level of awareness with whioh we will be most concerned. There appears to be an underlying theme which is characteristic of this groupi The United States is the most powerful nation in history, but it now appears that the price of such national power is the increasing— and eventually complete— powerlessness of the individual citizen. The almost perpetual state of civil strife which has recently emerged can be seen as a direct result of the refusal of rapidly growing numbers of people to accept this intolerable condition of powerlessness. Unfortunately, the tactics of lawlessness and violence used by those who seek to remedy their powerless condition are giving rise to an equally intolerable condition of social anarchy. The counter-tactics of repression are in turn leading us to the development of that very thing we have all thought can't happen here, the police state. Nobody will be free in America, and few will have any real power over their own lives, if it becomes nec­ essary to have policemen and/or soldiers on every street corner of our cities. And yet such a prospect is clearly possible in light of recent events, Americans neither deserve nor want such a future, nor do they have to accept such a future. Traditionally, Americans have looked forward to a future of increased freedom rather than diminished freedom. Such a future still lies before us, but to get there we must change some of our social and psych­ ological attitudes. Our present social and psychological 2Ibid. 3 attitudes are leading us to disaster.^ Basically, this is the liet motif of current thought in the rhetoric of what has popularly come to be known as the "counter­ culture"— the powerlessness of the individual to control his own life and destiny due to external forces over which he has no direct control. In our modem American culture there has been a tendency for human activities, which originate in human needs and desires, to become heavily regulated and organized by elite bureaucracies.     Andrée Grau: Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Andrée Grau Roehampton University, [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I address a number of topics relevant to anthropology generally and to the anthropology of dance specifically. I consider issues of classification and taxonomies; of interculturalism and transnationalism; of representation, exoticisation and internalised racism. I examine dance, hierarchies and discrimination, and discuss boundaries between dance and non-dance. For example, dance scholars, with a few exceptions, rarely write about figure skating, although it is cognate to Western theatre dance genres, especially ballet. Figure skating is sport, even in its ice dancing incarnation, whilst dance is art even in its ballet competition incarnations. I use as a case study the Russian skaters Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, who choreographed an ‘Australian Aboriginal Dance’ for their original routine for the 2010 European skating championships and Olympics. This offended Aboriginal elders who made a complaint to the Russian ambassador. I examine the controversy around the routine, how it was reported in the press and how the audience responded in Internet forums, focusing especially on the way Australian Aborigines con- tinue to be portrayed as stone age in popular media.     2014 Winter Olympic Competing Nations We list below detailed historial Olympic information for every IOC Member Nation that has previously competed at the Olympic Winter Games and that will compete in Sochi, as of 27 January 2014. There appear to be 88 qualified NOCs that have met IF quota requirements as of 24 January, and have accepted them (the previous record for a Winter Olympics is 82 in 2010 at Vancouver). Unfortunately, after reallocation of some quotas, only the skiing federation (FIS) has published the final quotas as of 26 January. We have tried to list below the sports for which each NOC has qualified but there is a small chance, with reallocations, that there may be minor differences in the final allocation by sport. There are seven nations that will compete in Sochi that have never before competed at the Olympic Winter Games – Dominica, Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste (East Timor), Togo, Tonga, and Zimbabwe. Their factsheets have been published previously on olympstats.com – see http://olympstats.com/2014/01/23/new-winter-olympic-nations-for-sochi/, which came out on 23 January. One problem nation is listed below and that is DPR Korea (North). They have not qualified any athletes for Sochi. They had the 1st and 2nd reserves for pairs figure skating but those do not appear to have been chosen by final reallocation of quota sports by the International Skating Union (ISU). However, yesterday (26 January), DPR Korea has petitioned the IOC for redress to allow them to have Olympic athletes compete in Sochi. So they are included below but it is unknown if they will compete.

This competition will be organized by Paris 2018 Gay Games Steering Committee, in cooperation with the Federation Française des Sports de Glace (FFSG) under the authorization of the International Skating Union (ISU). The International Adult Figure Skating Special Event Paris 2018 will be conducted in accordance with the ISU Constitution and General Regulations 2017, the ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules Single & Pair Skating and Ice Dance 2017, the Special Regulations & Technical Rules Synchronized Skating 2017, all pertinent ISU Communications, and this Announcement. The International Adult Figure Skating Special Event Paris 2018 is considered to be an “International Adult Special Event”. Participation in the International Adult Figure Skating Special Event is open to all eligible Skaters, according to the Rule 102, paragraph 3 and Rule 107, paragraph 11 of the ISU General Regulations, provided their ages fall within the limits specified in this Announcement and they meet the participation requirements.
