Board of Directors 2011-2012 The King’s Daughters is the founding organization of Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). We have more than Kathryn Permenter Callahan, President 115 years of fascinating history caring for children beginning with hiring a bicycle nurse, to opening a clinic, to building a modern Betsy Cooper, Vice President of Circles/Membership stand-alone pediatric hospital. We have been making a difference Beth Johnson, Vice President of Development in the lives of children in Hampton Roads since 1896. Brie Martinson, Treasurer Cathy Britt, Secretary The King’s Daughters’ membership is organized into circles (Adult and Junior) that are located throughout Hampton Roads. Each Circle elects its own leaders, organizes its own events, contributes hand-sewn items and donates time and money to CHKD. Members also chair and serve on The King’s Daughters’ major fundraising projects throughout the year. A Board of Directors which governs the organization is elected annually by the membership and is supported by a dedicated staff. Michelle Bass Adams Susan D. Brown Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters Donna Cowdrey Health System (CHS) is dedicated exclusively Lynn R. Knight to meeting the unique medical and Robyn Maus surgical needs of children, both inpatient Mary Beth Rickman and outpatient, throughout Virginia and Martha Fentress Smith northeastern North Carolina. Facilities Judi Worley include the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters as well as a comprehensive network of pediatric providers who work in locations throughout our community. The King’s Daughters Year in Review The history of The King’s Daughters’ organization is a long and venerable one that continues to thrive. As our integrated health system expands into new roles within our community, we are called to be champions of the cause. We aim to “promote superior pediatric wellness”, by advocacy and fund raising efforts that will support disease prevention, research and interventional initiatives, as well as provide state-of-the-art equipment and innovative programs, for the children of our community. Community The King’s Daughters continue to focus their attention and energy on providing superior healthcare for the children of our community.

    CROSS OF MALTA AND LOGO USAGE Cross of Malta The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States adopted for its official seal, the Cross of Malta, which has a heritage of honor, duty, sacrifice and courage that dates back to the 11th century. Each design aspect of VFW’s Cross of Malta symbolizes something special. The Great Seal of the U.S. contains a modified scroll from “E Pluribus Unum” (Out of many, one) to “Pro Deo Pro Patria” (For God For Country) together with the cross and radiating rays symbolize the character, vows and purposes distinguishing VFW as an order of warriors who have traveled far from home to defend sacred principles. While the Maltese Cross has religious origins and was used by the crusading Knights of St. John as a battle standard centuries ago, it is equally relevant today as a symbol of all those battling for noble ideals.     The Meaning of the VFW’s Cross of Malta History shows that the Cross of Malta, the emblem of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, is 1,000 years old. Nearly ten centuries ago, the Maltese Cross was made the symbol of fighting men who were united by a solemn pledge of comradeship to fight for freedom and to aid the sick and the needy. Those ancient obligations are still symbolized by the Cross of Malta today for two million former servicemen who are the VFW. The Cross of Malta is the symbol of their battles in time of war and of their campaign to defend the God-given rights of human beings in time of peace. The Cross of Malta symbolizes the compassion, or sympathy, of those men and women for the needy. It is the sign of services, which our contemporary veterans render to help make living better for everyone. Upon joining the VFW, a person vows in the presence of Almighty God and the members of this order to maintain loyalty to the government, to the VFW and to his fellow comrades. When the Cross of Malta is bestowed upon a new VFW member, he or she is pledged to advance the principles of the organization. The VFW is also joined by our Ladies Auxiliary in our efforts. Together, the VFW and its Auxiliary foster true patriotism and strengthen the institution of freedom. They improve their cities, towns and neighborhoods through community service. JOHN OF JERUSALEM OF RHODES AND OF MALTA – A GENERAL HISTORY OF THE ORDER OF MALTA INTRODUCTION: HOSPITALLERS Following thirteen years of excavation by the Israel Antiquities Authority, a thousand-year-old structure – once a hospital in Jerusalem – will be open to the public; part of it seems earmarked to serve as a restaurant. 1 In Syria, as the civil war rages on, reports and footage have been emerging of explosions in and around Crac des Chevaliers castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 2 During the interwar period (1923–1943), the Italian colonial authorities in the Dodecanese engaged in a wide-ranging series of projects to restore – and in some instances redesign – several buildings on Rhodes, in an attempt to recreate the late medieval/Renaissance lore of the island. 3 Between 2008 and 2013, the European Regional Development Fund provided the financial support necessary for Malta to undertake a large-scale restoration of several kilometres of fortifications, with the aim of not only preserving these structures but also enhancing Malta’s economic and social well- -being.4 Since 1999, the Sainte Fleur Pavilion in the Antananarivo University Hospital Centre in Madagascar has been helping mothers to give birth safely and assisting infants through care and research. 5 What binds together these seemingly disparate, geographically-scattered buildings, all with their stories of hope and despair? All of them – a hospital in Jerusalem, a castle in Syria, structures on Rhodes, fortifications on Malta, and yet another hospital, this time in Madagascar – attest to the constant (but evolving) mission of the Order of Malta “to Serve the Poor and Defend the Faith” over several centuries.

    History of the Maltese Cross The Maltese cross is known around the world as a symbol of the fire service. It is often seen painted on fire trucks, on the clothing of firefighters, depicted on firefighter’s badges, and is quite often the chosen design of firefighter tattoos. So where did the Maltese cross come from, and how did it get to be known as a symbol of the fire service? The Maltese cross is named after the island of Malta, which came to be the home of the Knights of St. John. The Knights of St. John existed during the 11th and 12th centuries. The armor worn by the Knights covered their entire bodies as well as their faces. Because of this it was often difficult for the Knights to recognize one another during battle. They realized they would need some type of symbol that could be used to quickly and easily identify themselves. They chose the Cross of Calvary, which would later be known as the Maltese cross. During the Crusades, the enemies of the nights commonly used fire as a weapon. It was quite common for a Knight to have to risk his own life to save another Knight or extinguish a fire. The Knights of St. John were also known for their care of the sick and injured. Combined with their abilities to fight fires, and the pride and honor they took in their work, the Maltese cross seems a fitting symbol of the modern fire service. Firefighting is a proud profession, and only a symbol of pride would exemplify the work of a firefighter.

Nicolò Isouard (1773-1818) is considered Malta’s national composer. After studies in France and Naples, he returned to his homeland, where from 1794 to 1798 he was an aspiring composer, and employee of the Order of Malta. In 1994 a collection of thirty-three autographs of hitherto unknown sacred music by Isouard appeared at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and I recognised the importance of these manuscripts. My intentions are to provide a précis on the Order, as the sovereign entity ruling Malta at the time, and the sacred music composed for them in their great Conventual Church in Valletta – now St John’s Co-Cathedral. The thesis will provide the background to Isouard’s early career and a complete edition and commentary of all of his sacred music, including additional works found during the research process, and a catalogue of his stage works.

The vexillological heritage of the Knights of Saint John in Malta Adrian Strickland ABSTRACT: This paper illustrates some of the flags used by the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta. We discuss the flags used during the period when the Knights ruled in Malta (between 1530 and 1798), together with some of the flags used by the Order in the present day. The final part of the paper illustrates flags presently in use in the Maltese islands, which derive from the flags of the Order. The illustrations for this paper appear on Plates 82-87. 1 The flag of the Order and the Maltese cross Before the famous battle of the Milvian Bridge in October 312AD^ the Roman Emperor Constantine is said to have dreamt of a sign by which he would conquer his enemy. In his dream the sign of a cross appeared with the motto In hoc signo vince. Later, the cross and this motto were reputed to have been borne on his battle standard, and a form of the cross was painted on the shields carried by his soldiers. There was something mystical about the strength of this sign and, indeed, the cross in all its variants was later to be included in the symbols and ensigns carried by Christian armies, a tradition which persists even to the present day. The Crusades, which later brought the flower of European chivalry together under one banner, were named after it, the banner of the cross.

Borg OSJ Since my installation as Grand Commander in December 2002, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, its Administrative Arm and its International Headquarters itself have all undergone great changes. New members - Knights and Dames - have been invested into the Order while a few have, on the other hand, lost interest and resigned. Others have even been expelled from the Order. Apart from the then existing Priories that have increased the number of Commanderies and the number of members, new Priories and new Commanderies have sprouted in other parts of the globe so as to be added to the ones that had already existed. The International Headquarters was in a grievous state and had to undergo and is still undergoing an overall refurbishment. All these activities had to be dealt with ‘on the spur of the moment’ with great difficulty and hardship. Had it not been for the donations and voluntary work given by some of our Knights/Dames and other members of the Order, all this could not have been possible to achieve. This voluminous amount of work did not stop – nor did it slow down – the Council from keeping the Malta Priory able to uphold its main aim, namely that of continuing to live up to the motto of the Order ‘Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum’ thus at all times being prompt in its generosity in the giving of donations to those who truly are in need.
