Kathryn Permenter Callahan, President Betsy Cooper, Vice President of Circles/Membership Beth Johnson, Vice President of Development Brie Martinson, Treasurer Cathy Britt, Secretary

Michelle Bass Adams Susan D. Brown Donna Cowdrey Lynn R. Knight Robyn Maus Mary Beth Rickman Martha Fentress Smith Judi Worley The King’s Daughters Since 1896... Board of Directors 2011-2012 The King’s Daughters is the founding organization of Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). We have more than Kathryn Permenter Callahan, President 115 years of fascinating history caring for children beginning with hiring a bicycle nurse, to opening a clinic, to building a modern Betsy Cooper, Vice President of Circles/Membership stand-alone pediatric hospital. We have been making a difference Beth Johnson, Vice President of Development in the lives of children in Hampton Roads since 1896. Brie Martinson, Treasurer Cathy Britt, Secretary

The King’s Daughters’ membership is organized into circles (Adult and Junior) that are located throughout Hampton Roads. Each Circle elects its own leaders, organizes its own events, contributes hand-sewn items and donates time and money to CHKD. Members also chair and serve on The King’s Daughters’ major fundraising projects throughout the year. A Board of Directors which governs the organization is elected annually by the membership and is supported by a dedicated staff.

Michelle Bass Adams Susan D. Brown Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters Donna Cowdrey Health System (CHS) is dedicated exclusively Lynn R. Knight to meeting the unique medical and Robyn Maus surgical needs of children, both inpatient Mary Beth Rickman and outpatient, throughout Virginia and Martha Fentress Smith northeastern North Carolina. Facilities Judi Worley include the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters as well as a comprehensive network of pediatric providers who work in locations throughout our community. The King’s Daughters Year in Review The history of The King’s Daughters’ organization is a long and venerable one that continues to thrive. As our integrated health system expands into new roles within our community, we are called to be champions of the cause. We aim to “promote superior pediatric wellness”, by advocacy and fund raising efforts that will support disease prevention, research and interventional initiatives, as well as provide state-of-the-art equipment and innovative programs, for the children of our community.

Community The King’s Daughters continue to focus their attention and energy on providing superior healthcare for the children of our community. We are so fortunate to have a membership that brims with creativity, passion, innovation and extreme dedication. Our volunteer activities are needed just as much today as they were more than 100 years ago. Our priority remains the same: CHILDREN

The King’s Daughters Office The four-member team consists of: Lisa Coleman, Executive Director, Jennifer Wilson, Development Assistant, Natalie Carducci, Membership Coordinator and Shelly Williford, Department Secretary. They worked tirelessly with all King’s Daughters current and prospective members, CHKD employees and the community at large to ensure the continuation of The King’s Daughters’ legacy. The King’s Daughters staff were active members of Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Volunteer Hampton Roads, Ghent Business Association, Virginia Association of Health Auxiliaries and Volunteers (VAHAV) and American Fund Raising Professionals.

Our Gift to CHKD The King’s Daughters continue to contribute toward our pledge of $250,000 to the CHKD Virginia Beach Health and Surgery Center. We expect to complete this obligation in FY 2012-2013 and begin to fulfill our pledge of $150,000 toward the purchase of an Aquatic Therapy Pool for CHKD’s newest location; the Chesapeake Health Center at Oakbrooke. The annual gift to CHKD totaled $700,000 for FY 2011-2012. These funds were raised through Circle Projects, Major Projects, Canister Funds and other sources.

Thrift Stores The King’s Daughters continued to support CHKD Thrift Stores through individual donations. The Circle Donation Bag Drive in May generated a total of 7,442 bags full of donations with 20 Circles participating. Each circle collects bags from its members, and totals are tallied. Cypress Point Circle was the winner of this year’s Bag Drive. 2nd place was Oceanfront Circle, 3rd place was Lakewood Circle and Circle in the Bridge received an honorable mention. Members of The King’s Daughters’ staff attended the Thrift Store Managers’ annual breakfast to show appreciation for their continued promotion of the canisters as well as the incredible daily operations of our thrift stores. The CHKD Thrift Stores have grown from 1 store near the hospital to 24 located from Richmond to North Carolina.

Membership We now have 1193 members in 47 Adult Circles and 6 Junior Circles. Sharing Circle retired after 46 years of service. We welcomed two new Junior Circles: Half Shell Circle and Spark of Light Circle (reactivated).

Our 1049 Adult members and 144 Junior members devoted 38,761 hours in the hospital and in the community raising funds, friends and awareness for CHKD.

KD Connect Meetings Our KD Connect meetings promote communication among Circles, staff and CHKD. They where held in September, October, January, April, and June. Circles presented numerous checks from individual projects and speakers from within CHKD.

The 2011-2012 King’s Daughters’ Annual Recognition Celebration was held on October 25 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. We welcomed special guest speaker US Senator Mark Warner. Awards were presented to Circle members, followed by a memorial service of departed King’s Daughters. Sandra Jackson and Whitney Quartucci received The King’s Daughters Award of Excellence which is awarded each year to non-King’s Daughters who show exemplary dedication to our organization.

Circle Accomplishments Circle projects and revenues again reached an all time high. Over $352,185 was donated by Circles this year. Donations included 24,860 pieces of linens, knitted items, sewn items, and gifts were donated. Adult Leaders and Treasurers attended orientation and training sessions in Norfolk and Virginia Beach in September. Circle members continued to arrange tours and meetings within the hospital, inspiring renewed interest, excitement and enthusiasm for CHKD.

Junior Circles Junior Circles continued to excel in providing Adult Circles with energetic volunteers. All Junior Circles attended a training and orientation meeting in September to help them organize for the year ahead. They held a new major fundraiser “Rocking 4 the Kids” at Lynnhaven Mall. All the Junior Circles worked together on this successful event, raising $3,292 for CHKD.

Corporate Advisory Board The primary mission of the Corporate Advisory Board is to provide insight and recommendations to The King’s Daughters that will enhance both the ability to increase attendance and revenue for all major fundraising projects, as well as to encourage existing and potential new corporate participation and partnerships. And to assist The King’s Daughters in their effort to educate the community as to what CHKD has to offer our children and families, and what as Corporate Advisory Board members they can do to help support CHKD. Sunny Sonner continued as Chair of the Corporate Advisory Board in 2011-2012.

The Board members for 2011-2012 were as follows: Jamie Albano, Albano Cleaners; Rick Allard, Watson Electric/ Iguana Surf Club; Kim Williams, TowneBank; Bob Batcher, City of Norfolk; Neal Brodsky, LeClair Ryan; Scott Freeman, Dolphin Fixtures; Toni Jones, Clear Channel; Andrea Di Carlo, La Bella; Kevin Murphy, Downtown Norfolk Civic League; Katerina Perez, Clear Channel; Harris Pezzella, Marathon Consulting; Paul Sharp, SYR Inc. Management Services; Doug Smith, Kaufman & Canoles Consulting; Eric Stevens, Bardo/Still/The Public House; Brian Sykes, Vandeventer Black; Kim Tamburino, Hoffman Beverage and Chris Neikirk, CHS Board Member.

Major Projects The King’s Daughters 2011-2012 Major Projects consisted of the Holly Festival of Trees, Holly Ball, Tour de Cuisine, and the RunWalk for the Kids:

The Holly Festival of Trees was held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach on November 18-19, 2011. The Holly Events kicked off with the evening Gala, Live and Silent Auctions. Once again, children and families enjoyed the holiday tradition of Breakfast with Santa. This year, the Holly Festival of Trees raised $70,000 for CHKD.

The Annual Holly Ball was held at The Westin, Town Center Virginia Beach, Saturday December 3, 2011. This event was attended by King’s Daughters, CHKD employees, CHKD Specialty Groups and by the Hampton Roads’ business community. The event raised $45,000 for CHKD.

The 8th Annual Tour de Cuisine was held in the Riverpoint neighborhood of Norfolk on May 20, 2012. Five families in our community opened their beautiful homes, and five local restaurants donated their culinary creations. New features included collaborating with The Art Institute of Virginia Beach’s Culinary School, as well as showcasing local artists and a Beer Garden. The “damp” atmosphere didn’t dampen attendance and this event was able to raise $30,000.

The 7th Annual RunWalk for the Kids was held on June 16, 2012 at Town Point Park, Norfolk. This 8K Run, 2-mile Walk and 1 mile Fun Run raised $104,000 for CHKD with nearly 3,000 participants from all over the Hampton Roads community. The RunWalk attracted families, schools, churches, and businesses alike. CHKD’s Sports Medicine continued to play a pivotal role as First Aid for RunWalk for the Kids participants. Teams again played a vital role in participation with more than 145 teams made up of families, friends, and businesses as well as many CHKD employees and patients. CHKD’s Team Rehab won an award for the CHKD team with the most participants, Circle in the Bridge won the KD team with the most participants, Team Ethan won the community award for the team with the most participants and Team Aubri Lynn won the community award for the team that raised the most funds. More than 100 volunteers from the community came out that day to help make this event fun, educational, and a great success for our hospital.

4 Other Fundraisers, Special Projects and Happenings In addition to Circle activities and Major Projects, The King’s Daughters supported the following special projects:

Caritas Circle, Circle of Friends, North Suffolk Circle, Circle of Rainbows and Lynnhaven Sandpipers Junior Circle, participated in the annual “Make a Scarecrow, Make a Difference” project hosted in conjunction with McDonald Garden Center, October 15-16. This event raised over $26,430.00.

The King’s Daughters teamed up once again with the Iguana Surf Club for their annual “Almost a Surf Contest” Competition. Friends and families got together for a fun day on the beach and were later presented with prizes for accomplishments such as “The Best Wipeout!” This event raised $4,500 for CHKD.

We were privileged to bid artist Tom Barnes “Bon Voyage” as he and his lovely “Clarisse” headed to Paris to exhibit in the Louvre. Tom graciously held an art auction to benefit CHKD and raised $24,000 prior to his trip across the pond.

Canisters The King’s Daughters, with the generous help of local merchants and our own CHKD Thrift Stores, raised an incredible $232,062 from canister donations this year. Our canisters are easily identifiable and are an essential form of income to The King’s Daughters.

Advocacy Efforts This year, once again our membership advocated for our hospital. Eight King’s Daughters met personally with legislative officials in Richmond last February to remind them of the needs and importance of supporting bills that advocate better healthcare for the children of our community. The King’s Daughters were reminded to contact each of their district’s legislators directly to garner their support.

In closing... Congratulations on another successful year. It has been a privilege to serve as president of this dynamic group. I look forward to working with our Circles and supporters on behalf of the children of our community.

Sincerely,

Sherry Connell & David Smith - Congratulations 2012 Award Winners!

David Smith For over a decade now, Dave has volunteered his time for the Holly Festival of Trees on the planning committee serving as Silent Auction Chair several years as well as other tasks wherever he sees fit. He has also been a dedicated volunteer as CHKD’s “Healthy Bear” at our annual RunWalk for the Kids as well as various other fundraisers over the years (braving hot temperatures and excited children without revealing his identity!). He is truly a valued volunteer and has been a patron of KD events for many years and has recruited other volunteers and supporters as well. Dave is always willing and eager to help any way he can, whenever he can, enhancing projects and major events for the benefit of CHKD.

Sherry Connell Marketing Department, McDonald Garden Centers Sherry has been coordinating the planning and volunteer efforts of the “Make a Difference, Make a Scarecrow” fundraiser for 17 years now. She is a wonderful supporter, volunteering her expertise and much of her own time to CHKD. She has been vital to the success and huge growth of this event over the years. She is an absolute joy to work with and truly has the children at heart in her dedication to CHKD.

In Memoriam...

Ruth E. Cole Princess Anne Circle

M J Nero Beacon Circle

Nita Reed Wayside Circle

We remember them... In the rising of the sun and in its going down, In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, We Remember Them.

In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring, In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, We Remember Them.

In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, In the beginning of the year and when it ends, We Remember Them.

When we are weary and in need of strength, When we are lost and sick at heart, We Remember Them.

When we have joys we yearn to share, We Remember Them.

So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us as, We Remember Them.
