The collection, which spans the years 1867- , is comprised of correspondence, political mailings, ephemera, memorabilia, postcards, printed materials, photographs and negatives. Noteworthy items include photographs and/or negatives of Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon and Robert F. Kennedy campaigning, touring, or attending events on Long Island. The majority of the photographs are of a rally held for then-Senator John F. Kennedy at Roosevelt Raceway, Mineola, on Oct. 12, 1960. Included in these rally photographs are such notables as John F. “Jack” English, Nassau Democratic chairman, and then soon-to-be Nassau County executive, Eugene H. Nickerson. There are also a small number of negatives of a Kennedy whistle-stop appearance at the Wantagh railroad station, and of a JFK rally at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma. After flying to MacArthur, Kennedy was driven to a rally at the Long Island Arena in Commack, where he was greeted by over eight thousand enthusiastic supporters. The images of Robert F. Kennedy, mostly black and white negatives, follow him during two tour stops he made on Long Island on February 17, 1967. The first stop was at Syosset High School, where he addressed the student body. Later, he attended a luncheon honoring new Newsday publisher, Bill D. Moyers, at the old Garden City Hotel. Along with Kennedy and Moyers, the members of the dais included Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller; Harry F. Guggenheim, Newsday’s president and editor in chief; Sen. Jacob K. Javits; Suffolk County Executive H. Lee Dennison; and Nassau County Executive Eugene H. Nickerson, who had also appeared with Kennedy at Syosset H.S. The six 8” x 10” black and white photos of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower show the future president, on Oct. 28, 1952, addressing supporters at the old Nassau County Court House in Mineola. On that day, Eisenhower’s motorcade traveled through Queens County as well as through numerous communities in Nassau County. Also notable in the collection is a ballot (18” x 25”) from the 1896 presidential election, which was won by William McKinley (25th President of the United States). Politics Collection, 1867- .
