jonny nelson Jonny’s career path has been anything but ordinary. Growing up in Preston, Lancashire Jonny grafted has way through local TV, before making a name for himself nationally in the world of entertainment reporting with ITV2. Having started his career in stand up, live radio and every obscure local event you could imagine, Jonny developed a panache for adapting quickly and hilariously to any situation. This unique talent soon led to him becoming a firm favourite on the red carpet and established him as one of the UK’s leading showbiz journalists. Whether disarming Hollywood directors with his passionate knowledge of film, soliciting laughs from comedy greats such as Will Ferrell and Ricky Gervais, or even achieving the near impossible of cracking a smile from Robert De Niro, Jonny was quick to establish himself as the go-to-guy for bold and entertaining celebrity interviews to remember. Backed by a degree in broadcast journalism, it is the combination of his comedic sensibilities and natural charisma that saw him picked up in 2016 by Premier League TV, joining the Kick Off presenting team to report live to tens of millions worldwide. With this sports background and an ability to inject a healthy dose of ‘funny’ into any genre, it was not long before Jonny’s presenting talents were utilised to front online content for digital colossus Give Me Sport, and Nickelodeon’s hugely popular show Nick Kicks. He is also one of the lead hosts of GOAL’s hugely popular Studs Up show. Throughout lock down Jonny began presenting regular entertainment news bulletin show FYI Extra. Jonny has previously scripted and voiced Channel 5’s showbiz round-up show Access, as well as presenting on ITV2’s entertainment news round-up show FYI. He’s also presented the latest music news and chart output for popular radio show Capital FM. Revelling in his love for football, Jonny has presented various football related programmes. He co-hosted The Very Modern Football Show alongside Rachel Stringer, testing the knowledge of some of football’s greatest legends including Henrik Larsson, Yaya Toure and Xabi Alonso, throughout the UEFA Champions League campaign. In 2018 Jonny took a more in-depth look into the sport, presenting international programme The Football Show alongside Layla Anna Lee. The globetrotting magazine show is available on Sky Sports. In demand commercially, he's additionally presented digital campaigns for the likes of O2, BT, BBC Bitesize, Flybe, Moss Bros and Primark, both in the UK and abroad and has become a trusted live corporate host for numerous business events and awards. In 2017 Jonny was chosen to front BBC2 and CBBC’s highly anticipated live Saturday morning children’s show, Saturday Mash- Up, alongside Yasmin Evans. After a successful three month run the show was recommissioned and returned in September 2018 for an extended series. FOOTBALL AGENTS IN THE BIGGEST FIVE EUROPEAN FOOTBALL MARKETS AN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH REPORT FEBRUARY 2012 Raffaele Poli, CIES Football Observatory, University of Neuchâtel Giambattista Rossi, João Havelange Scholarship, Birkbeck University (London) With the collaboration of Roger Besson, CIES Football Observatory, University of Neuchâtel Football agent portrayed by the Ivorian woodcarver Bienwélé Coulibaly Executive summary While intermediaries acting in the transfers of footballers have existed since almost the birth of the professional game, the profession of agent was not officially recognised until 1991 when FIFA established the first official licensing system. In November 2011, there were 6,082 licensed agents worldwide: 41% of them were domiciled within countries hosting the big five European leagues: England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France. This research project firstly investigates shares in the representation market of players in the five major European championships. By presenting the results of a survey questionnaire, it analyses the socio-demographic profile of licensed football agents in the above mentioned countries, the business structure of their activity, the different kinds of services provided, and the way in which they are performed from a relational point of view (network approach). The analysis of shares highlights that the big five league players’ representation market is highly concentrated: half of the footballers are managed by 83 football agents or agencies. Our study reveals the existence of closed relational networks that clearly favors the concentration of players under the control of few agents. Footballers are not equally distributed between intermediaries. Conversely, dominant actors exist alongside dominated agents. One fifth of the agents having answered to our questionnaire manage the career of half of the players represented on the whole.

We then apply this methodology to estimate the theoretical value of transfer fees for professional football players. First, we compute the individual index of media value and expressed it with respect to the average of the top 2,500 players included in our data set of more than 5,000 individuals. The media value score is the factor by which the number of news of a player multiplies the news articles of the normal (average) player in our sample. Based on individual appraisals, we then work out the media value rank of football teams and leagues. To calculate the theoretical value of football players, we estimate regression models using as dependent variable the transfer fees actually paid. Our analyses allow us to conclude that, in determining the theoretical transfer fee of a player, it is necessary to consider a few variables, among which the media value status plays a major role. Other explanatory variables to explain the transfer fees are: contract duration, economic status of the hiring team, number of years of experience (quadratic form), player's age at the end of the contract, and media value share of the player within his team.
