13 WEEKDAYS OF ADVENT December 17 to December 24

The following readings are used from December 17 to 24. If a Sunday occurs during this time, the weekday readings for that day are omitted, but they may be anticipated or used later on another day during the week, especially to avoid duplicating the Sunday readings.

193 DECEMBER 17

FIRST READING

The scepter shall not depart from Judah.

A reading from the Book of Genesis 49:2, 8-10 acob called his sons and said to them: J“Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob, listen to Israel, your father. “You, Judah, shall your brothers praise —your hand on the neck of your enemies; the sons of your father shall bow down to you. Judah, like a lion’s whelp, you have grown up on prey, my son. He crouches like a lion recumbent, the king of beasts—who would dare rouse him? The scepter shall never depart from Judah, or the mace from between his legs, While tribute is brought to him, and he receives the people’s homage.” The word of the Lord.

DECEMBER 29 — THE FIFTH DAY IN THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS 121

DECEMBER 29 202

The Fifth Day in the Octave of Christmas

FIRST READING

Those who love their brother remain in the light.

A reading from the first Letter of Saint John 2:3-11 eloved: B The way we may be sure that we know Jesus is to keep his commandments. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not keep his command- ments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought to walk just as he walked. Beloved, I am writing no new commandment to you but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. And yet I do write a new commandment to you, which holds true in him and among you, for the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light, yet hates his brother, is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing in him to cause a fall. Whoever hates his brother is in darkness; he walks in darkness and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes. The word of the Lord. ASH WEDNESDAY 219 If the blessing and distribution of ashes take place outside Mass, it is appropriate that the Liturgy of the Word precede it, using texts assigned to the Mass of Ash Wednesday.

FIRST READING Rend your hearts, not your garments. A reading from the Book of the Prophet Joel 2:12-18

ven now, says the LORD, E return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment. Perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing, Offerings and libations for the LORD, your God. Blow the trumpet in Zion! proclaim a fast, call an assembly; Gather the people, notify the congregation; Assemble the elders, gather the children and the infants at the breast; Let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber. Between the porch and the let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep, And say, “Spare, O LORD, your people, and make not your heritage a reproach, with the nations ruling over them! Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’ ”

Then the LORD was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people. The word of the Lord.

167 FOURTH WEEK OF LENT — OPTIONAL MASS 233 [243] VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL John 8:12 I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.

GOSPEL

He went, washed and came back able to see.

= A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 9:1-41 s Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth. A His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam”—which means Sent—. So he went and washed, and came back able to see. His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the one who used to sit and beg?” Some said, “It is,” but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” He said, “I am.” So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” He replied, “The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went there and washed and was able to see.” And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.” They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath. So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.” 464 FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME — MONDAY [323] RESPONSORIAL PSALM 31:20, 21, 22, 23, 24

MONDAY 443

FIRST READING Year I

I ask that prayers be offered for everyone to God who wills everyone to be saved. A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy 2:1-8 eloved: BFirst of all, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as ransom for all. This was the testimony at the proper time. For this I was appointed preacher and Apostle (I am speaking the truth, I am not lying), teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument. The word of the Lord.

For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.

= A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 16:1-8 esus said to his disciples, “A rich man had a steward Jwho was reported to him for squandering his property. He summoned him and said, ‘What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.’ The steward said to himself, ‘What shall I do, now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg. I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.’ He called in his master’s debtors one by one. To the first he said, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He replied, ‘One hundred measures of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.’ Then to another he said, ‘And you, how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘One hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Here is your promissory note; write one for eighty.’ And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently. For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than the children of light.” The Gospel of the Lord.
