Brenner Design date 1909 Reverse Design Union shield Designer Lyndall Bass Design date 2010 The Lincoln cent or Lincoln penny is a cent coin (or penny) (1/100 of a dollar) that has been struck by the United States Mint since 1909. The obverse or heads side was designed by Victor David Brenner, as was the original reverse. The coin has seen several reverse, or tails, designs and now bears one by Lyndall Bass depicting a Union shield. In 1905, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was hired by the Mint to redesign the cent and the four gold coins, which did not require congressional approval. Two of Saint-Gaudens's proposed designs for the cent were eventually adapted for the gold pieces, but Saint-Gaudens died in August 1907 before submitting additional designs for the cent. In January 1909, the Mint engaged Brenner to design a cent depicting the late President Abraham Lincoln, 1909 being the centennial year of his birth. Brenner's design was eventually approved, and the new coins were issued to great public interest on August 2, 1909. Brenner's initials (VDB), on the reverse at its base, were deemed too prominent once the coins were issued, and were removed within days of the release.

    Liberty Coin Service Collecting Mercury Dimes by Thomas Coulson The Winged Liberty Dime, popularly known as the ‘Mercury Dime’ was introduced late in 1916 as part of the ambitious and needed redseign of United States coinage. The new coin was the beautiful work of Adolph A. Weinman who was a renowned sculptor and also the designer of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. His new obverse design portrayed a youth- ful miss Liberty in a winged cap along with modern looking design ele- ments such as thin numerals and lettering, higher relief and wire rims. The new reverse broke with nearly sixty years of tradition by replacing the ‘cereal wreath’ with a fresh interpretation of Ancient Roman Fas- ces. The Fasces were symbolic of the authoratative power of the Nation 1916-S Mercury Dime flanked by a ‘peaceful’ olive branch that might be interpreted as the Na- tion’s discretion to use that power. Such a design was a statement in its day on the eve of the United States’ entrance into World War I and its eventual role as an arbiter of the con- flict. The design was quite well received upon its debut; though it is interesting to note that its introduction was delayed a few months due to technical issues resulting from usage in early vending machines. Citizens appreciated the new dime’s beauty and modernity in contrast to the plain and staid Barber coinage. The ‘Mercury’ Dime was a solid success as a circulating coin and it has become a treasured collectible. It was struck until 1945, when the national tragedy of President Roosevelt’s death prompted a new memorial dime design to replace it.
