The Alpha Nus The Bi-semester Newsletter of the Alpha Nu Chapter of Sigma Chi September 23, 2010 Fall Pledge Class The Alpha Nu chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity is proud to say that we are starting the semester with the largest pledge class since receiving our charter back. From the hard work and dedication of our Rush Chairman, Caleb Wiley, and the active members of our Fraternity, we were able to extend a formal bid to pledgeship to 28 worthy gentlemen. Caleb and his committee implemented new and innovative ways to rush these young men, and thanks in part to your alumni support was able to put on four successful rush trips to Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas. Our Roundup Chairman, Andrew Brooks, executed a great weekend for our brothers, guests and rushees to enjoy. Friday March 26th, we entertained the crowds with Austin hip hop artist KJ Hines, followed by Houston rapper, Slim Thug along with a foam party and slip and slide. On Saturday the 27th, we transformed the yard into an enormous crawfish boil with the Brandon Steadman Band followed by Texas country artist Roger Creager. We were able to donate $2000 of proceeds to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Relay for Life Last April the Alpha Nu Chapter was the largest donor to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Nick De La Cruz spearheaded the effort by organizing fundraisers at companies such as Panda Express and IHOP. Balfour Leadership Training Workshop Each summer leaders from Sigma Chi's undergraduate chapters spend four days on a college campus, deeply immersed in presentations, discussions and problem solving sessions about chapter operations and other issues that affect a chapter's viability. This summer we sent six members, Parker Kink, Thomas Meehan, Caleb Wiley, Josh Woods, Travis Brim and Chris Fisher, to UNC to represent Alpha Nu and to improve the quality of their leadership skills. Horizons Horizons is a challenging and proven leadership experience specifically created for Sigma Chis who are eager to improve their leadership skills. This year we were privileged to send Caleb Wiley and Marc Goodwin on this prestigious Horizons journey. Alumni Big Bro Program This year we are implementing an Alumni Big Bro Program, which is an easy way to get more alumni involved with the pledgeship process and close the gap between active and alumnus. This program is a way to get each pledge in touch with an alumnus big bro and create an opportunity for the alumni to come by the house, get involved in the chapter, and meet with their little bro. To learn more about this program contact our Tribune, Parker Kink, via email at [email protected], or by phone at 832-492-6801. Traditions Night We plan to host this special event on or around October 22 at a special venue in Austin where alumni, actives, and pledges can all gather in a formal setting for dinner and drinks. We hope to be able to host some special guest speakers at the event, with the formal announcement of all the new Alumni Big Brother participants and their respective Little Bros at the climax of the night. All alumni are strongly encouraged to participate at this event being that it is put on primarily for them. OSU Tailgate We will host the annual alumni tailgate on November 13 at the Alpha Nu House. A band, food, and drinks will be sure to make for a good time for all alumni and their families to come by and reunite with some more Austin area Sigma Chi alumni. Again, all alumni are strongly encouraged to participate. Fight Night Fight Night is a US Amateur Boxing Association sanctioned event where fraternities compete against each other in a 3 round boxing match. After an overwhelmingly successful Fight Night last year we will be hosting our second annual Sigma Chi Fight Night at the Alpha Nu house November 5th, and are committed to making it even better than before. The fights will be followed by a concert from Houston rap artist Bun B. Fight Night Chairman, Jeff Deriso, is working relentlessly to pull off this phenomenal event. We hope to beat our donation last year of $6500 to charity, which will go to the Boys and Girls Club. We are accepting all donations from both local and alumni sponsors. Philanthropy This semester we will be doing the Keep Austin Beautiful street cleanups in the location from 38th Street to 45th Street on Guadalupe, just north of campus. These occur monthly, and our Fraternity's name is located on a street sign recognizing our commitment. Also, we will be doing the Waller Creek Cleanup in November, and volunteering at the Austin Museum of Art's Food and Wine Festival October 14. Our Fight Night this year is also benefitting the Boys and Girls Club of Austin. .
