Louise Salmond Smith

A very warm welcome to The Prebendal School. I hope this prospectus gives you an insight into the unique nature of our school, which is situated alongside the historic setting of Chichester Cathedral in the heart of the city.

Choosing the right school for your son or daughter is one of the most important decisions that you will have to make. Please browse this prospectus and begin to get a flavour of our wonderful school. Our children are part of a caring community where encouragement, praise and understanding are deeply embedded in the culture of our school.

Our youngest children start in the Pre-Prep which gives the children an excellent introduction into school life in a small and caring community. As they progress through the school, the classes remain small - an optimum of 16 pupils in a class enables pupils to have the right balance of individual attention coupled with the benefits of socialisation and a healthy exchange of ideas. The children have many opportunities, both within and outside the classroom, to grow in self-confidence and flourish as learners and individuals.

You will undoubtedly have many questions and I hope that the information provided here will be of interest to you; however, I urge you to come and visit us and see for yourselves the excellent values and ethics that makes The Prebendal School such a special place. Alternatively, for a more informal visit, assemblies on Tuesdays and Thursdays take place in Chichester Cathedral. These are open to the public, as well as to parents, and you are warmly encouraged to come and experience the unique environment that encourages all of our pupils to be the very best version of themselves.

2 The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 The Prebendal Nursery

From the very first day, our warm and nurturing environment inspires confidence and a passion for learning.

Our Nursery has a unique and enviable location in the heart of historic Chichester. The earliest a child can attend our Nursery is from the term in which they turn three years old. Our qualified teachers ensure that individual interests and needs are catered for, and every child has the opportunity to develop at their own pace.

We encourage active imaginations and creative expression and we are passionate about the benefits of outdoor education which include our status as a Beach School. The children also love our outdoor classroom, and the abundant natural resources right on our doorstep including the Bishop’s Gardens and the spacious Prebendal playing fields.

The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 3 Nursery to Year 2

Our Pre-Prep

Our Pre-Prep department educates children from Nursery through to Year 2. We welcome children moving up from our Nursery whilst, for some, this is their first experience of The Prebendal when they start school in Reception. Classes are small enabling a great deal of individual attention and there is a lovely family-friendly atmosphere. The Pre-Prep is a dedicated team of teachers who are committed to giving each child the best possible start to their school life. The children all learn in our bright and colourful purpose-built building called Highleigh.

Children in our Pre-Prep go on a wide range of trips and outings which enhance their learning. Not only is The Prebendal an official Beach School, but we also provide many opportunities to enjoy the sights and sounds of historic Chichester and further afield. Our close links with Chichester Cathedral also mean the children enjoy spending time in the Cathedral for workshops, concert performances, assemblies and other events. Their own plays, Sports Day, Prize Giving and concerts add to their learning journey.

The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 5 Year 3 to Year 8

The Prep School

Years 3 to 8 form our Prep School and our small classes allow our teaching staff to focus on the needs of the individual. Years 3 and 4 build upon the excellent foundation laid by our Pre-Prep department and a rich and varied curriculum is delivered. Subject specialist teachers also maximise the potential of each child. Progress is closely monitored and parents are kept informed via formal written reports, attainment and effort grades and meetings as well as informal consultations should specific concerns arise. The Form Tutor is a regular point of contact for the pupils and there are teachers responsible for more serious issues relating to pastoral matters. We also provide a comprehensive programme for those who need additional support.

1:1 iPad Learning Pupils in Year 8 use iPads as an additional tool to enrich their learning. Tablet technology has revolutionised learning through apps that aid revision, help children to stay organised, engage them through augmented reality, help them produce their own revision aids, and enable them to access resources quickly and easily via our own Online Learning Hub. We use iPads as a fantastic way to embed technology within the working habits of our pupils. Children in Years 6-8 are also able to apply for the position of Digital Leader and successful pupils form a working party to provide training, classroom support, and to test new apps.

6 The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 Pre-Senior Baccalaureate The PSB encourages strong partnerships between parents and schools that promote an understanding of how each individual child learns. With the clear target of developing lifelong learners, we believe it is important for parents to have clear access to what is being studied and an understanding of why. In PSB schools, children continue to have a minimum of two assessment tests per year and the relationship between knowledge and skills remains very important. At Prebendal, we continue to teach the Common Entrance syllabus because we believe it is excellent preparation for GCSE. However, the teaching is underpinned by the PSB core skills of Thinking and Learning, Reviewing and Improving, Communicating, Collaboration and Leadership.

What makes the PSB distinctive is the active and focused development of skills at the heart of a traditional curriculum. Alongside a grading system for academic study there is one for the core skills, and this is monitored with input from all staff. This will be monitored through a tutorial system focused on individual personal development, as well as the vertical structure within Houses. Tutors meet regularly with children in their groups and also hold 1:1 meetings when they go through all aspects of school life and the development of an individual’s academic and extra-curricular profile.

The aim is to ensure that by the time pupils leave The Prebendal, they will have developed a secure understanding of how they learn, strong independent and collaborative learning skills, and also experienced leadership. In schools that have been running a PSB skills based curriculum, it is clear that they take far greater ownership of, and interest in, their learning than is the case in a purely knowledge-based curriculum. Gradually, the PSB core skills will filter down to the lower end of the school and will form a significant part of what makes Prebendal such an exciting and forward-thinking place for a child to be at school.

The Prebendal Extended Project (PEP) This is part of the PSB, enabling pupils to focus less on the narrowness of endless spoon-feeding of information for exams, and more on the joy of discovering and investigating things for themselves. Whilst our pupils continue to focus on English, Maths and Science for Common Entrance, we facilitate a love of learning and ensure that pupils are ready for the broader aspects of life, and not just exams. The issues pupils may wish to address may be of a social, political, ethical or philosophical nature. A specific topic or question may be probed with much greater depth than would usually be achieved with an essay. A PEP could take the shape of a field study or investigation, cultivating research and analysis techniques and fostering a love for a subject area.

The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 7 Quadrivium

At The Prebendal School, we are keen to support pupils who want to really push the boundaries of their knowledge, critical and interdisciplinary thinking, philosophy and high- order questioning skills.

Quadrivium is our programme of academic excellence for all pupils in Years 6-8. Once a week, pupils are grouped vertically and challenged with sessions appropriate to their stage. These sessions, which may be led by staff, parents or a visiting speaker, are designed to broaden their perspectives, raise aspirations, and encourage them to think and articulate their ideas.

Sometimes these sessions will consist of a particular challenge or problem to solve. Parents who wish to come and speak to the children about their careers, or any topic about which they are particularly knowledgeable, are warmly encouraged to share their experiences with pupils.

Our view at Prebendal is that education should be so much richer than simply the ingestion of information. Quadrivium ensures that pupils are given every opportunity to develop skills that will equip them for an uncertain world, and a job market that will be very different from the one we have today.

8 The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 Outdoor Learning

Our outdoor classroom

Beach School continues to be a highlight of the week for our younger pupils. The immeasurable value of outdoor learning does not diminish with age, and we continue to explore opportunities for older pupils to benefit from the advantages of being outside. They are, after all, only children once.

Beach School sessions are embedded into the termly schedule of our older pupils. Furthermore, our outdoor classroom and amphitheatre ensures that similar opportunities to learn outside are available within the school grounds and are easily accessed for all year groups.

Wraparound Care We support busy family life by providing Breakfast & Supper Clubs as well as an After School Club and activities. Pupil participation in our vast range of After School Clubs is strongly encouraged. The clubs vary from term to term and a full list can be obtained from our School Office. In addition to After Schools Clubs, Prep pupils can go into Prep after school. This means they can do their homework, or Prep as it is known here.

A Home from Home We are a family-orientated school that caters to every child’s individual needs. We offer full, weekly or flexi-boarding and we tailor our provision to suit each family whether you are from the UK, from overseas or in the Forces.

Our boarding numbers continue to rise each year and include a growing number of international boarders. Many of our day pupils become boarders during their time at The Prebendal as, for many, this prepares them for their senior school. Families also choose boarding as it suits their busy lives and we are able to support family life. We also hold a number of boarding events and activities, with numerous trips, and boarders can stay connected with home via Skype.

Our boarding is overseen by the House Master, and Assistant House Master, under the guidance of the Head. They are supported by experienced matrons and other staff.

“The quality of boarding is excellent.” 10 The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 ISI Inspection Report Responsibilities & experiences throughout the age groups to help children develop their crucial ‘life’ skills.

Personal Development

The children begin their outdoor educational experiences from the very moment they join The Prebendal. In Pre-Prep, there is Beach School, leadership skills and outdoor tasks, as well as camp craft skills. There are also numerous visits on our doorstep, to wonderful locations in and around Chichester.

In Year 3, there is an overnight camp and a full day of water sports and other outward- bound skills. In Years 4 and 5, the children enjoy an outward bound long weekend in either Bristol or the Isle of Purbeck, while in Year 6, pupils have the opportunity to go on a number of school trips.

Years 7 & 8 Pupils enjoy a wide range of responsibilities and opportunities for both Leadership and Development. In Year 7, we run a Leadership Programme and there are trips to Lulworth Cove, Moonfleet and a week’s stay at a French chateau in Normandy. In Year 8, the children host events, give speeches, speak in Cathedral assemblies and go on a Leavers’ Trip to Cobnor. There is also a comprehensive Leavers’ Programme with career talks, e-safety, drugs awareness lectures and a first aid course. All our senior pupils also enjoy being a ‘Buddy’ for our younger children in Pre-Prep.

The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 11 Our World-Class Choristers

Boys usually start in the Choir in Years 3 or 4 with a period of training. During this time, they are known as ‘probationers’. They spend approximately a year as a probationer. The Choristers board for four nights a week and this creates a lovely family atmosphere in the Boarding House along with the other boarding Prebendal pupils. Choristers are appointed on their musical & vocational potential, regardless of their financial circumstances. The Cathedral pays 50% of the full fees and, for those who need more assistance, further funds are available. Applying for a bursary is a means-tested application process and the Choristers also receive free piano tuition.

Whilst studying at The Prebendal, our Choristers sing almost daily in one of the country’s most iconic buildings as The Prebendal is the choir school for Chichester Cathedral. They benefit from an outstanding musical education which, in turn, gives them an excellent foundation for continuing success.

History & Tradition The Prebendal is the oldest school in and probably dates back to the foundation of Chichester Cathedral in the 11th century. It was re-founded in 1497 by Bishop Edward Storey who attached it to the Prebendal of Highleigh in Chichester Cathedral and thus gave it its present name.

Originally, The Prebendal would have been a ‘Song School’ for the Cathedral Choristers - a tradition that is central to our ethos today. The Prebendal was also one of the first schools to become co-eduational in the 1970s and girls arrived in 1972. The School has since developed into a thriving community for day and boarding girls and boys aged three to 13.

“The main dorm has an unusual vaulted ceiling and comparisons with Hogwarts are irresistible.” The Good Schools Guide

12 The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 The Prebendal has developed an enviable reputation as a centre for musical excellence. Approximately 95% of our pupils play one musical instrument or more and there is an emphasis on practical music-making across every year group.

In addition to our showcase concerts every term, there are Informal Concerts, a House Singing competition, an Inter House Music Festival and the opportunity to perform in front of the public or at private functions. Every week, pupils perform in Chichester Cathedral at our assemblies, whether as part of a choir or as a soloist, while our annual Prebendal Choral Day provides a magnificent occasion for celebration.

The Choristers enhance the school’s musical reputation and a team of outstanding specialist music teachers, led by our Director of Music and Assistant Director of Music, cultivate and nurture individual musical talent. Every year, a high proportion of our Year 8 pupils secure Music Scholarships to a range of prestigious senior schools and a number of Prebendalians (former pupils) work in the music profession.

Music at The Prebendal

We encourage a love of music and the opportunities to perform are endless.

The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 13 The Prebendal playing fields are in a stunning location in the centre of Chichester only a Sport For All few minutes’ walk from the school. In addition to the normal pitches, there are all- weather cricket nets, netball courts, tennis courts and an all-weather cricket pitch.

Pupils enjoy a packed sporting calendar and every pupil is encouraged to represent the school at fixtures throughout the academic year. Our sports are Netball, Football, Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Rounders, Athletics, Tennis and Swimming. Sport is provided by specialist coaches and the pupils enjoy a number of Games sessions every week.

Sport encourages team building, co-operation and team spirit as well as promoting health and well-being. A huge range of competitive matches are played against other schools and many pupils excel and represent the county. Parents are always welcome to support matches, whether home or away, and the pupils often achieve a great level of skill and enjoyment.

Pupils also enjoy PE and in these lessons they develop their fundamental movement skills of flexibility, strength, control and balance. These are the necessary techniques all athletes rely on to become masters in their field and they’re also essential for children to stay fit and healthy as they mature.

14 The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 We want our pupils to think beyond Creative Prebendal the boundaries, be original and free thinking, and constantly explore ideas across all the subjects.

We encourage our pupils to think creatively, be innovative, to solve problems, to adapt to change and to work together. These are all important life skills that need to be nurtured and we ensure that creativity and fun are key elements of our curriculum. Improved self- esteem, the thrill of acquiring new skills and the deep sense of satisfaction - these can all be gained from creating an original piece of art, music, writing or drama, whether it has come from personal or collaborative efforts.

The children perform many Drama productions and they also read, sing or perform on their instruments in Chichester Cathedral on a regular basis.

Every child also has the option of individual speech and drama lessons and many take the LAMDA examinations.

18 The Prebendal School Prospectus 2018-2019 FAQs What time is school? The school hours for our day pupils in the Prep School is 8:20am to 4:30pm. At the end of the day, the Prep School children (Years 3-8) are ticked off. After 4:50pm, the children must sign themselves out prior to leaving the school. No child is allowed to go home unaccompanied without a written request to this effect being submitted to the Head.

For children in our Pre-Prep (Nursery-Year 2) classrooms are open from 8:15am. Afternoon pick up for EYFS children (Nursery & Reception) is at 3pm and for KS1 (Years 1 & 2) it is 3:10pm.

When can I send my child to The Prebendal? The earliest a child can join the School is the term in which they turn three years old, providing they are dry. Attendance in our Nursery is flexible.

Is there an After School Club? Yes, this takes place in our Pre-Prep Department and children who have siblings in the Prep School are entitled to a free session until 4:30pm Monday to Friday. There are also a range of after school activities throughout the -Pre Prep & Prep School. There may be an additional charge for some of these and parents book their children in at the start of each term.

How do you recognise a pupil’s achievement? Children receive pluses in lessons in all areas of school life. These are recorded in their Pupil Organiser and the totals accumulate each term so children receive Bronze, Silver or Gold certificates of achievement. If the child has worked extremely hard, they may achieve a Head’s award. Children are also recognised with Commendations in subject areas.

How much homework is there? Homework is called Prep and the children will have a varying amount depending on which year group they are in. There are also Prep sessions during the school day. Pupils in the Prep School (Years 3-8) record their Prep in their Pupil Organisers and parents should sign off their Prep each evening. Form Tutors check the Pupil Organisers on a weekly basis.

How are children disciplined? Our preferred approach to achieving good behaviour is by positive reinforcement. If a pupil has committed a minor misdemeanour, a comment is written in their Pupil Organiser. If a pupil receives three comments in a week, they receive a Deputy Head’s detention.

How do I get in & out of the School? Access is via a biometric system. Anyone who is authorised to pick up or drop off pupils has their ‘fingerprint’ recorded. This enables access via the school gates at specific times.
