50th Annual Space Coast Art Festival 1 Downtown Cocoa Beach, FL 2013 FESTIVAL POSTER ARTIST: HENRY LUND This year’s winning art- ist is Henry Lund, a Cocoa Beach resident. Lund was born in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1951 and at- tended DeLaura Middle School and Satellite High. He enrolled in art classes at Brevard Community Col- lege and later studied un- der famed artist Peter Max.

An artist with many talents, Lund has de- signed sets and promotional materials for several celebrities including the comic Carrot Top, the comedian Jon Lovitz and the band Rehab. He was the first artist to air-brush surfboards on the East Coast and became a much sought after celebrity surf board artist. If you look closely, Lund’s surf board art can frequently be found in the photographs of Art Brewer and other renowned surfing photogra- phers.

When asked for his inspiration for this year’s poster design, Lund jokingly replied that he was “nagged into it” by one of his friends. “Seriously” he added “I just wanted to do something that would reflect our area – our wonderful space coast and the great place where we live.”

Look for Lund at this year’s art festival. He is frequently seen with his dog Rebel, a long- haired chihuahua.

50th Annual Space Coast Art Festival 13 Downtown Cocoa Beach, FL SPACE COAST ART FESTIVAL, INC. CELEBRATES 50 YEARS In 1963-64, a group of local artists headed by Virginia Valuzzi and members of the business community organized what was then known as the “Cocoa Beach Sidewalk Art Show”. Two years later the Art Show became part of the October Fair and was organized by Kit and Charles Oldag. In 1968, the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club and its President Mary Catherine Jones assumed the responsibility of the show, under the sponsorship of the City of Cocoa Beach.

The organization incorporated in 1972 and Space Coast Art Festival, Inc. was born. A Festival Logo was designed by Dick Hansen, a graphic artist, and the event date was changed to Thanksgiving weekend. Ann Brush served as the first President of the volunteer Corporate Board of Directors, which included representatives from the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club, the City of Cocoa Beach, the business community and the community at large.

In 1985 a jurying process was initiated and judges for the show were selected from art schools, museums, colleges and universities. In 1988, the first Artist Directory/Program was published by Florida Today and in 1989, a Performing Arts Segment was introduced. In 1996, SCAF applied for and was granted status as a not-for-profit corporation under 501 (c) (3) of the IRS code and in 1998, established year round headquarters in downtown Cocoa Beach.

Other important elements that have been added to the Festival over the years include:

• An annual Festival Poster designed by a Florida artist. • A judged Student Art Show for local students in grades 1 – 12 • A Volunteer T-shirt design contest for students in grades 1 – 12 • A Young at Art booth with hands-on activities for budding artists age 3 years and up • A 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning • A Judges Reception, Friday evening, providing an opportunity for Patrons of SCAF to meet the Festival Judges.

The outstanding success of the SCAF during its 50 year history is due to the continued support of Patrons, Volunteers, Corporate and Business Sponsors, the Brevard County Board of Commission- ers and the City of Cocoa Beach. Their dedication and support has made the Space Coast Art Festival one of Florida’s most prestigious art festivals, with over $50,000 in cash awards for exhibiting artists.

50th Annual Space Coast Art Festival 14 Downtown Cocoa Beach, FL POSTER RETROSPECTIVE PRESIDENT’S AWARD View an array of previous SCAF posters and The President’s Award is memorabilia in the Retrospective Tent located at in honor of Jay Dow. Jay the East end of Minutemen Causeway. was involved with Space Coast Art Festival for more than 30 years prior to her sudden death on Novem- ber 30, 2011. Her long service to SCAF was most frequently as Co-Registrar where she worked closely with the show artists. 50th Anniversary Logo The Space Coast Art Festival has unveiled a new updated logo for our 50th Anniversary show. Created by Alex Bean, the winner of a county-wide SCAF logo design contest, the logo represents all the wonderful attributes found in the beautiful Cocoa Beach area. BOARD OF DIRECTORS
