children.” -- Tatanka Iyotake, Sitting Bull handbook should be much more than a rulebook. As the name suggests, it is something to keep close at hand, to provide guidance in our common life together. So rather than dwell on A rules, this handbook seeks to focus on standards for a community. It is the responsibility of every student and parent to familiarize themselves with the contents of this handbook. Inevitably, the guidelines outlined in the handbook will not cover every detail or situation that may arise. Therefore, should a student be in doubt regarding any part of this handbook, he/she should approach administration for clarification, rather than attempt to determine on his/her own what is permissible. The School Supervisor will have the final determination when interpreting any situation, rule or consequence. At their discretion, the School Supervisor may deal directly with any issue that the regulations do not explicitly cover or when he determines the spirit of the policy has been violated. This handbook has been prepared to help you become better informed about the programs at Chemawa Indian School. Parents and Guardians, please feel free to come to the school anytime, day or night to visit or talk with our staff members concerning the welfare and progress of your student. We at Chemawa are honored that you have chosen us for the education of your child. It is our philosophy that this school was designed to meet the need of Alaskan Natives and Native American youth. The school needs and appreciates input and direction from parents concerning the operation of the school. Chemawa Indian Boarding School is fully accredited through AdvancED, the State of Oregon and the Bureau of Indian Education. School Mission Statement: The mission of Chemawa Indian School is to maintain the highest academic standards and foster excellent educational opportunities for American Indians and Alaska Natives. Cognizant of the diversity among American and Alaska Native cultures, Chemawa shall endeavor to preserve a safe and affirmative learning environment in which caring professional staff will demonstrate their commitment, through mutual respect and input given to decision making, as mentors and role models to each student. Chemawa will strive to fundamentally and systematically administer substantive academic programs that will challenge and reward both students and staff and facilitate the transformation of individual effort and enthusiasm into knowledge, skills and experience necessary to make choices that enrich life enabling each person to become positive contributors to their respective tribal communities and society as a whole. 3 Chemawa fully acknowledges the learning process as “dynamic” and will continually attempt to maintain higher levels of expectations for its students and staff, affording each a diverse opportunity for meaningful growth and development. The impetus of Chemawa will be the sound use of all resources and the application of “leading edge” technologies, enabling student connectivity beyond the boundaries of school walls. Chemawa shall afford each student an opportunity to achieve his/her full potential as a shared success between themselves, parent and our community. School Philosophy: A successful Chemawa community produces successful students. • A successful Chemawa community is composed of students and staff who demonstrate a willingness to work on his/her educational growth, as well as working to improve individual social skills. Learning is considered a lifestyle and not a destination. • A successful Chemawa community is composed of students and staff who are responsible for making personal choices that allow the students to pursue their social, emotional and educational growth. • A successful Chemawa community is composed of students and staff who, by their personal choice of behavior, show respect for self and others. • A successful Chemawa community is composed of students and staff who are able to adapt and maintain a positive level of resiliency to changing environmental factors. This resiliency will be interwoven with reverence and the inclusion of traditional
