Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena will be shown on the 35’ X19’, state-of-the-art Steinberg Screen at the BAM Harvey Theater, and each screening will be preceded by a discussion with renowned soprano Deborah Voigt, moderated by Metropolitan Opera Senior Radio Producer Mary Jo Heath (an occasional backstage correspondent for the HD series). Directed by David McVicar and conducted by Marco Armillato, the cast includes Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as Anna’s romantic rival Giovanna, Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov as Enrico, American tenor Stephen Costello as Anna’s first love Lord Percy, and American mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford as the queen’s devoted page Smeton. Considered one of Donizetti’s finest works, Anna Bolena (1830) is the first in a trilogy of bel canto operas based on the lives of Tudor-era queens, and recounts Anna Bolena’s inability to provide a male heir to King Henry VIII. Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda (1835) premiered at the Met on December 31, 2012. The first-ever Met production of the composer’s second “Tudor” opera, it is also directed by David McVicar and is conducted by Maurizio Benini. It features mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as Mary, Queen of Scots; South African soprano Elza van den Heever as Mary’s rival, Queen Elizabeth I; Matthew Polenzani as Leicester, the nobleman caught between the dueling monarchs; Matthew Rose as Talbot, Mary’s jailer; and Joshua Hopkins as Elizabeth’s advisor Cecil. Soprano Deborah Voigt is recognized as one of the world’s most versatile singers and one of music’s most endearing personalities. She appears regularly, as both performer and host, in the Metropolitan Opera’s The Met: Live in HD series, and is an active recitalist and performer of Broadway standards and popular songs. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1991 as Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera. Her Met performance history has included Marie in Wozzeck, Brünnhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Cassandra in Les Troyens, Minnie in La Faniciulla del West, Isolde in Tristan und Isolde, Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, Chrysothemis in Elektra, the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, Elsa in Lohengrin, Leonora in La Forza del Destino and Il Trovatore, and the title roles of La Gioconda, Die Ägyptische Helena, Tosca, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Aida.
