According to the American Marketing Association, marketing is “an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value for customers and for managing relationships in ways that benefit the organizations and its stake holders.” This means that marketing deals essentially with identifying and meeting human and social needs. It’s a societal process, by which not only individuals as well as groups obtain what they need and want, by creating, offering and exchanging products/services of value with others. Virtually everything can be marketed: goods, services, events, experiences, persons, places, properties, organizations, information, ideas… the list goes on and on, as almost everything can be the subject of one’s needs and desires. The market When something is interchangeable, you must find someone to interchange it with. That is the basic premise in the concept of market – the term is used by marketers to cover the wide variety of consumer groups. There are several types of markets, named after their targeted consumer group: • Consumer Markets – dominated by products and services designed for the general consumer; typically this kind of market splits into four categories: consumer products, food and beverage, retail, and transportation. • Business Markets – this is where organizations purchase raw materials, natural resources and components of other products for their resale or for use in manufacturing another product. • Global Markets – when international buyers and sellers are involved; provides good chance of profit, but needs special attention in choosing the right region to penetrate. • Non-profit and Governmental

This article may contain an excessive amount of intricate detail that may only interest a specific audience. Please helprelocate any relevant information, and remove excessive detail that may be against Wikipedia inclusion policy. (July 2014) A woman twerking in a contest Twerking ( / ˈ t w ɜr k ɪ ŋ /) is a type of dancing in which an individual, usually a female,[1] dances to music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low squatting stance.[2] Though the term seems to be of uncertain origin with common assumptions suggesting it represents a contraction of "footwork" or a portmanteau of the words "twist" and "jerk", the Oxford Dictionaries blog says "the most likely theory is that it is an alteration of work, because that word has a history of being used in similar ways, with dancers being encouraged to "work it". ("Twerk it" is a common phrase as well.) The "t" could be a result of blending with another word such as twist or twitch."[3] There is evidence from ethnographic interviews in New Orleans that the term began as street language in New Orleans with the rise of the local hip hop music known as Bounce.[4] Since the late 1990s, twerking was associated[by whom?] with Bounce music of the Dirty South and was disseminated via mainstream hip hop videos and popular video-sharing sites since the mid- 2000s. In 2013, twerk was added to the Oxford Dictionary Online.[5] According to Oxford dictionary, the word has been around for 20 years.

UNDERSTANDING MUSICKING ON SOCIAL MEDIA: MUSIC SHARING, SOCIALITY AND CITIZENSHIP Raquel Campos Valverde http://orcid.org/ 0000-0003-3712-6152 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of London South Bank University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy This research programme was carried out with an ACI Doctoral Scholarship March 2019 ii Abstract Based on online and offline ethnographic fieldwork among the Spanish community in London, this thesis investigates why people circulate and share music on social media platforms, particularly within a context of migration. Written from the perspective of an insider-outsider, it combines research data from ethnographic participant observation and interviews to understand how music media circulates online, studying the different roles it fulfils within these contexts as different forms of musicking. The thesis responds to these questions by addressing six areas. Chapter 1 explores the uses of music to perform and articulate cultural and gender identity on social media profiles. Chapter 2 investigates how music sharing and compiling can be used to maintain relationships and social capital and to participate in transnational sociality. Chapter 3 addresses how the circulation of music parody as citizen engagement in contexts of political conflict such as the Brexit and Catalonian referendums gives rise to temporary political alliances in the form of citizen assemblages. Chapter 4 considers the circulation of music on social media from the perspective of fandom and how it is influenced by post-object ephemeral and reflexive practices. Chapter 5 analyses how the ubiquitous and imagined character of online music media fosters its circulation as a silent and visual element of online sociality, effectively generating practices of imagined listening.

This chapter is published in Russian Culture in the Era of Globalisation (eds Vlad Strukov and Sarah Hudspith and), Abingdon: Routledge 2018, 240-263. 1 Saara Ratilainen Independent and Popular? Russian Youth Videos in the Age of Globalisation 1. Introduction According to Google, in 2015 the most popular YouTube video in the Russian Federation was a clip entitled ‘Winnie the Pooh and the Bees’. (Allok & Anfilova 2015).1 It received over 28 million views; however it did not feature the characters from the famous children’s book. Instead the video features a group of teenage girls, dressed in black-and-orange-striped leotards, performing a sexually-charged twerk dance at the seasonal show of the local dance school ‘Kredo’ in Orenburg. The video was uploaded on 12 April 2015 by an anonymous user and the footage was taken by a member of the audience on a digital camera or personal mobile phone. In less than two weeks, this video was followed by another viral video featuring a twerk by Russian dancers who chose the World War II memorial Malaia Zemlia in the city of Novorossiisk as the backdrop for their performance. Both videos caused a heated public discussion about female behaviour and adolescent education; at the same time they placed the dance style which is extremely fashionable among Russian youth at the centre of this public discussion. Simultaneously, the videos became breaking news in international media who focussed on the penalties imposed on the dance schools and dancers involved. The school in Orenburg was temporarily closed, twerk classes removed from the schedule and a criminal investigation opened with charges of indecent exposure of underage children.

  • Twerking and Cultural Appropriation
Twerking and Cultural Appropriation: Miley Cyrus’ Display of Racial Ignorance Shereen Zink Abstract Miley Cyrus’ recent habit of twerking has sparked debate over whether the pop star is misappropriating African American culture; some even going so far as to accuse her of racism. This paper reviews the literature that exists in the public sphere on the topic, and delves into a scholarly analysis of Cyrus’ actions, statements, and the implications they have. My own post-analysis interpretation of the issue is addressed in the concluding paragraphs. Ultimately, twerking’s political context, and Cyrus’ lack of regard for said context, suggest that she is perpetuating harmful stereotypes about black women while her own white privilege allows her to maintain her integrity. Cyrus may not be intentionally exploiting black culture, but she is certainly communicating more than she may have bargained for. The public debate over Miley Cyrus’ twerking is certainly an interesting one. Her actions in her recent music videos, and her 2013 Video Music Awards performance, have left her at the center of a race issue. By styling herself after “ratchet” culture—a term generally considered an insult to African American women—and by misrepresenting an element of African American culture; Cyrus has sparked debate about cultural appropriation and racism in popular culture. The arguments range from convicting Cyrus of “calculated racism” to suggesting that it is racist to call Cyrus racist (Julious, 2013; Yates, 2013). While Cyrus 15 MUSe Vol. 3(1) May 2017 herself may not be racist, both her use of marginalized cultural cues to exert her new sexual image, and her portrayal of black women in her performances, have racial implications.

The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond A dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music James Gabrillo Peterhouse, University of Cambridge November 2018 This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration. I further state that no substantial part of my dissertation has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other quali- fication at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution. It does not exceed the word limit prescribed by the Degree Committee. "2 of 293" The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond James Gabrillo Abstract This dissertation provides the first detailed account of the mass musical culture of the Philippines that originated in the 1990s and continues to be the most popular style of musical entertainment in the country — a scene I dub the New Manila Sound. Through a combination of archival research, musical analysis, and ethnographic fieldwork, my ex- amination focuses on its two major pioneers: the musical television programme Eat Bula- ga! (Lunchtime Surprise) and the pop-rock band Aegis. I document the scene’s rise and development as it attracted mostly consumers from the lower classes and influenced oth- er programmes and musicians to adapt its content and aesthetics. The scene’s trademark kitsch qualities of parody, humour, and exaggeration served as forms of diversion to au- diences recovering from the turbulent dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos from 1965 to 1986, when musical works primarily comprised of state-commissioned nationalist an- thems, Western art music, and protest songs.

I am extremely lucky to have been mentored by her, especially, in light of her immense contributions to the scholarship on Asian American poetry in Spain. But, if there is truly no place like home, what is one to do when displaced from that very place? What does one have to do in order to belong to a place, other than home? And, what would this place need to embody, in order for us to call it home? It is said, home is where the heart is; an age-old adage that holds the promise of a home even when distance separates the body from the very place that holds our hearts captive.
