    Capítulo III Acerca da especificidade do sector bancário português ─ tendências recentes do seu desenvolvimento Introdução As alterações profundas, ocorridas nas últimas duas décadas, na estrutura concorrencial da actividade bancária no conjunto dos países industrializados europeus, no sentido da desregulamentação e da liberalização, também caracterizaram os desenvolvimentos recentes da banca nacional. Todo este processo de liberalização e abertura à iniciativa privada da banca teve efeitos plurais sobre a estrutura do sector: desde os níveis da actividade creditícia, da rendibilidade, da cobertura bancária, da intervenção nos mercados bolsista e cambial, da internacionalização das instituições, da inovação de serviços financeiros até ao grau de concentração foram profunda e rapidamente alterados. Com efeito, o processo de desregulamentação determinou novas estratégias de cooperação / concorrência das instituições de crédito cuja face mais visível foi a emergência recente de diferentes grupos financeiros e o processo de fusões e aquisições de que foram actores. É sobre o conjunto destas modificações que informam o desenvolvimento recente da banca portuguesa que este capítulo vai versar. III.1. Breve caracterização histórica do sistema bancário português. Até à revolução de 1974, todos os bancos que operavam em Portugal eram privados, tendo como única excepção a Caixa Geral de Depósitos (de propriedade 143 exclusivamente pública)1. Mesmo os bancos emissores ─ Banco de Portugal, Banco Nacional Ultramarino e Banco de Angola ─ tinham o estatuto de privado.
