    Census 2011 Summary Vale of White Horse Including Abingdon, Wantage, Faringdon and Grove Who we are How we live What we do Page 2 The 2011 Census The national Census was carried out on 27 March 2011 and the results were released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) from mid-2012 onwards. Data from the Census survey gives an in-depth picture of the local population, housing, living arrangements and employment and is used by communities and public sector agencies to help plan local services. Completing the Census form was mandatory and an estimated 97%1 of the households in Vale of White Horse district completed their questionnaire on paper or the internet (across England the return rate was 95%). This leaflet provides a summary of the main findings of the 2011 Census survey for Vale of White Horse district and for the main settlements of Abingdon, Wantage, Grove and Faringdon. Note that the majority of this publication uses ward data and Faringdon ward includes the parishes of Great and Little Coxwell. Further local area Census data is available for parishes, electoral wards and for smaller geographic areas including output areas (covering an average of 150 households) and super output areas (of up to 1,200 households). See Finding out more at the end of this leaflet. Who we are – the population of Vale of White Horse As of March 2011, there were 121,000 people living in Vale of White Horse district. This was up from the total of 115,600 residents at the time of the last Census survey in 2001, an increase of around 5,300 (+5%).
