Torres Receives Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, from Centro Escolar University HAGÅTÑA, GUAM – The Judiciary of Guam is proud to announce that Guam Supreme Court Justice Robert J. Torres will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the graduation ceremony of Centro Escolar University Makati in Manila, Philippines on Thursday, April 20, 2017, in recognition of his exemplary achievements in the field of law, his stellar educational attainment, his reputation for integrity in the performance of his judicial functions, and his innovative ideas to improve the functioning of the courts. Founded on June 3, 1907 by Doña Librada Avelino and Doña Carmen de Luna, Centro Escolar University of the Philippines was established for the instruction and training of the youth in all branches of the arts and sciences. After over 100 years of existence, the University has expanded with three campuses in Manila, Makati and Malolos, and over 50 academic programs excelling not only in the fields of pharmacy, dentistry, optometry and nursing, but law, education, and business as well. The Legal Education Board of the Philippines recently recognized the CEU School of Law and Jurisprudence as one of the Best Performing Law Schools. Justice Torres now joins a select list of distinguished recipients of the honorary degree including former Presidents of the Philippines, Fidel V. Ramos and Benigno S. Aquino, III, former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Enrique M. Fernando, Claudio Teehankee, and Marcelo B. Fernan and, the late former senator, Mariam Defensor Santiago. His Honor will be the first foreign-born recipient of the prestigious degree. In addition to his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School, Justice Torres was also awarded a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.), honoris causa, from the University of Cebu in 2011. His Honor is married to the Honorable Senator Mary Camacho Torres, and they have 3 children and 9 grandchildren. Torres will also be the keynote commencement speaker at the University’s graduation ceremony which will begin at 10:00 am in Manila, Philippines. The graduating students will be receiving their degrees of Juris Doctor, Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business Administration, Tourism, Hospitality and Restaurant Management, Computer Science and Information Technology.
