17/4/2019: Issue 80. Number 39 79 Years of Service

“KNITTED KNOCKERS” Australia

This weeks speaker was Cheryl Webster (nee Beale) who spoke about “Knitted Knockers” – an initiative to help women who have had breast cancer and other issues. Cheryl was born and raised in Daysdale and lived in the district for many years. She married her husband Ian and had 4 children and has 3 grandchildren. Cheryl has Program and Roster: had a varied life with many different businesses. She has been a member of the ASSEMBLY Rotary Club of Waverly for over 5 years and is a Paul Harris Fellow, due to her work with Wednesday “Knitted Knockers”. Last year she was given 23th APRIL a Senior Victorian of the Year Achievement Award.

Cheryl has had her own struggles with Breast Cancer, three times and RSL CLUB hates cancer with a fury. She has a passion for helping people, which is where her drive for “Knitted Knockers” comes from. She first

Chairman heard of “Knitted Knockers” from America and was fascinated how Bill B it helped survivors, their self-esteem and was an alternative to cosmetic surgery. Treasurer “Knitted Knockers” was started as a way for women who have had a Ian B mastectomy to receive prosthetic cotton knitted breast fillers for free. Cheryl and a few other Rotary Grace women founded the Australian “Knitted Knockers”. It has grown to have over 15,500 people Alan W knitting the breasts. Australia has patented and redesigned the pattern for the ones used in Australia and it has slowly grown into a very strong and valuable part of the breast cancer Loyal Toast treatment and survival process. Cheryl has been a major force in getting the knockers David T registered, ensuring privacy, helping the many branches they have, publicity and making the quality control of the product excellent. International Toast “Knitted Knockers” is an amazing organisation and the good Ray T they do in the community is outstanding. Our club was Rotary Information honoured to hear Cheryl speak and we will look into helping Howard S with a donation of some form soon.

BENEFICIAL to all concerned? th Wed 24 April: Program and Venue TBC. I have just watched a program on bowel cancer and was surprised by the low numbers who take up the opportunity to undertake the free screening test for bowel cancer. The test is designed to screen for and detect the presence of bowel cancer at an early stage and has a high degree of accuracy.

The government-sponsored test is provided to all Australians every five years commencing when we reach the age of 50 and ceases at 75 years. Only 40% of the test kits distributed are returned. Males being the worst at undertaking the test and those in their early 50’s being the poorest at returning the completed test. The statistic given was that if all completed their tests every five years, than over the next twenty years we would save the lives of 85,000 Australians.

Within our Rotary service program we also distribute test kits. Over an extensive number of years Graeme Campbell has carried out the task of distributing the Rotary test kits. This year with Graeme taking on the responsibility of being the Rotary Market Manager, Ian Brooks has stepped forward to take on the responsibility for supervising our Rotary Bowel scanning program. We thank both Graeme and Ian for the delivery of this Rotary service within our district and for their support of this important program.

President 2018-2019: Rotarian Bill Bott Secretary: Rotarian Eric Sadlowski Treasurer: Rotarian David Potts Vice President: Rotarian Gary Poidevin President Elect 2019-20: Rotarian Paul Miegel P.O. Box 153 Corowa, NSW, 2646. Bulletin Editor: Stephen Apps [email protected] - 0438 371 973 He’s been a familiar voice in the Border North East having started his broadcasting career in earnest with 3NE in , on the 14th of April 1969. Ray Terrill is celebrating 50 years of broadcasting today on ABC Goulburn Murray. Ray went to Lee Murray’s school of broadcasting in Melbourne, had a brief stint with 3DB reading news before the afternoon shift at 3NE came up.

He started broadcasting in the North East on 14th of April 1969 at 3NE, on the afternoon shift, 1 to 4:30pm. Whilst with the Wangaratta based broadcasters he worked every shift, evenings, weekends, mornings and afternoons. In 1980 he was offered the coveted Breakfast shift at 2AY in , a position he held for a decade. Again he took on many roles including musical director, and what he doesn’t know about music isn’t worth knowing.

In 1990 he took time out to spend with family and pursue a business career – operating school buses in the Rutherglen district. Later in 1990 he returned to 2AY to do Saturday Swap Shop, where he stayed for 12 years. In 2009 he became the Saturday Breakfast presenter on ABC Goulburn Murray.

Ray has a special bond with his producer; Shane Goldsworthy who he says knows him and they work as one. “Shane is good value and he’s the ultimate producer”. For Ray it’s the magic of radio that he loves and the connection he makes with people – he is part of their lives, and they are part of his on a Saturday morning. When he is not at the ABC he is helping Radio Rutherglen, of which he helped build and is the chief technician.

Outside of radio, Ray a proud Dad of two adult daughters, Stephanie and Georgia and he loves spending time with them, he’s involved in Rotary as a member of Corowa Rotary Club, he is also a Paul Harris Fellow and keeps active with his swimming and cycling.
