We’d like to think that in a highly partisan modern world, we actually live up to the credo: “We New York@Night Report, You Decide”. No segment of jazz or improvised music or avant garde or 4 whatever you call it is overlooked, since only as a full quilt can we keep out the cold of commercialism. It’s an embarrassment of riches, really, this first month of Artist Feature: Orrin Evans summer. I’m sitting with Jackie McLean at the Artists Collective in Hartford, Connecticut, on Friday, July the 20th, 2001. We’re conducting an oral history interview for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Project. The first thing I’d like to do is thank Mr. McLean for agreeing to participate in this oral history. McLean: Oh, it’s my pleasure. It’s very important. Brower: I want to start with what we were talking about before we actually started the formal interview and ask you to tell us about your recent trip to Europe, where you played, with whom you were playing, and then talk about how you’re handling your performance – the performance dimension of your life – right now. McLean: This most recent trip that I made – I made two trips to play with Mal Waldron. The first one was in Verona, Italy, a couple of weeks ago. That was a duo where Mal and I played for about 70 minutes solo, between he and I, duo. Then I went just last week over to the North Sea Festival in the Hague to play with Mal again, this time with his trio, with Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman, Mal, and I was special guest. -

It's just meant the world to me.” Davis, now beloved and highly influential in his own right, has always viewed J.J. not just as the inspiration for every modern jazz trombonist, but as the model upon which his personal artistic aspirations are built. "J.J. Johnson is the Charlie Parker of the trombone," says Davis. "He's our Bird. He changed the game for the instrument. He's been a colossal influence on my playing, on my writing, and on my overall approach to the music." Now, Davis is ready to offer a compelling tribute to the NEA Jazz Master with his new release on Smoke Sessions Records, Say When. To pay proper tribute to a legend, an artist - even one as extraordinary as Davis - must do more than pay homage, but must extend that storied legacy, demonstrating its timelessness by offering a musical vision that is immediate and of the present. -

Recent reports indicate that Festival Network, which took over George Wein’s Festival Productions company last year, Interview: Charli Persip has laid off most its staff, making it uncertain if New York (or any other city for 6 by George Kanzler that matter) has seen its last JVC Jazz Festival. We will report more as we obtain Artist Feature: Larry Ochs information but this is a serious blow as jazz rarely got that level of exposure otherwise. Another, more personal casualty, is the dismissal of legendary jazz 7 by Marc Medwin journalist Nat Hentoff from the Village Voice after 50 years. His final column for Label Spotlight: Blue Note Records the once-proud counterculture rag was Jan. 6th, 2009. Hentoff will still continue writing for other outlets including, ironically, the Wall Street Journal. 8 by Joel Roberts But jazz as an art form has weathered such storms before and, honestly, how Club Profile: Miller Theater much smaller can its market share get anyway?
