COMMONWEALTH WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION Latest News August, 2013 Penang 2013….. The last stop before Glasgow !!! The majestic city of Penang, Malaysia from the 24th November to 30th November will host the 2013 Commonwealth Championships for Senior, Junior & Youth. With the assistance and co-operation of the World Masters Weightlifting Board, the first World Cup Masters will be held in conjunction with this event. In effect Penang will be uniting the ages of weightlifting. There are no doubts that this event will be a festival of weightlifting. The competition will be held at the Youth and Sport Complex at Batu Uban, Penang. The training will also be at the same venue. The accommodation will be at the Vistana Hotel which is the same hotel used during the 2009 Commonwealth Championships. The Youth and Sport Complex at Batu Uban –Penang . The program at this stage is as follows: 23 November Arrival of athletes 24 November CWF Congress and Verification of Final Entries 24 November Opening Ceremony and Welcome Dinner 25 November Master World Cup Championships 26 November Commonwealth Championships 27 November Master World Cup Championships 28 November Commonwealth Championships 29 November Master World Cup Championships 30 November Commonwealth Championships 30 November Closing banquet and presentation of awards Dato Ong Poh Eng Naturally this is subject to minor changes once all entries have been received. This event will be the last time that all commonwealth lifters will be able to gather prior to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year. A special thanks must go Dato Ong Poh Eng , Vice President of the IWF, Vice President of the CWF and President of the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation and to his Organising Committee and most important to the Government of Penang for their support in hosting this festival of weightlifting. (October 10th 2013) Any entries after the closing date will not be accepted . 2013 IWF Electoral Congress The IWF Electoral Congress was held in Moscow on 20th – 21st May. We are delighted to see that nine officials coming from the Commonwealth nations were elected to various positions. Please see candidates below. .. The lifters will receive specialist support services and financial assistance to help them train and prepare more effectively for upcoming competitions, culminating in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The announcement comes at an exciting time for the sport, which is celebrating the news from Sport England that 20,500 more people are lifting weights on a regular basis than a year ago. The eight funded weightlifters are: Gareth Evans (27, from Holyhead) coached by Ray Williams Emily Godley (23, from London) coached by Keith Morgan Darius Jokarzadeh (20, from Cardiff) coached by Rhodri Thomas Peter Kirkbride (25, from Kilmarnock) coached by Charles Hamilton Jack Oliver (22, from London, lives in Leeds) Self-coached Natasha Perdue (37, from Swansea) coached by Karl Grant Zoe Smith (19, from London) Self-coached Rebekah Tiler (14, from Mytholmroyd) coached by Edward Halstead British Weight Lifting Performance Director, Tommy Yule, said: “It’s great to have these athletes on the World Class Programme. Vale It is very sad that we have lost four dear friends of the Commonwealth in the last few months. From the Solomon Islands, we lost Mr. Andrew Nori, President of the Solomon Islands Olympic Committee and President of the Solomon Islands Weightlifting Federation . From Uganda we lost Ms. Nusula Nambi Rip a former weightlifter and also official. From Kiribati, the 2012 Commonwealth and Oceania champion, 26 year old Meamea Thomas. From Nauru, many years treasurer of the Nauru Weightlifting Federation, Mrs. Rosa Kun. Our deepest sympathies go to all of their families and their respective national federations. New Executive for Pakistan The Pakistan Weightlifting Federation recently held its electoral meeting. The newly appointed office bearers are as follows: Chairman: Mr Mian Amir Mahmood, President Mr Mian Muhamad Asiam , Chief Executive Officer Mr Hafiz Imran Butt, Secretary General Mr Amjad Amin Butt and the treasurer is Mr Ali Asiam Chandhry. Congratulation to the new Executive Board and the CWF wishes Pakistan all the very best in preparation to next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. New Executive for Nigeria These are the Executive Office Bearers of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation recently appointed at their electoral meeting. President: Hon. Prince Chibudom Nwuche OFR, Vice President: Mr Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed , Secretary General Uche R. Onwumeh. It is pleasing to see amongst the other nine elected board members, Dr Steve Olarinoye, Lawrence Iquaibom and Maryam Usman are now involved at an Executive level. Congratulations to all elected officials and the CWF looks forward to see Nigeria in Glasgow next year. New Executive for Ghana The Executive Office Bearers of Ghana Weightlifting Federation recently appointed are: President Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah, Vice President Mr Isaac Tetteh, General Secretary Mr Husseini Akueteh Addy, Treasurer Kobina Baidoo. The CWF wishes Ghana a very successful term of office and also look forward to see Ghana at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year. New Executive forSri Lanka Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation also held its electoral meeting. These are the Executive Office Bearers of the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation. President Mr Peshala Jayarathne Bandara appointed for another term in office, General Secretary Mr Poorna Kakingala, also reappointed for another term, Treasurer Mr Gamini Kumaradasa. Congratulations to the office bearers and we also look forward to see Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year. England is on the way back The performances of the English team for the last two Commonwealth Games were not quite what was seen in the past. But as I look at the photo below, it strongly indicates that England is back. Obviously the CWF is delighted with this. It is nice to see also in this picture sitting at the front, the legendary Mr. John Lear, who for three decades 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, was at the helm of the English team producing so many world class lifters.
