Rappresenta la famiglia di spermatofite con il più elevato numero di specie. Le asteracee sono piante di solito erbacee con infiorescenza che è normalmente un capolino composto di singoli fiori che possono essere tutti tubulosi (es. Conyza ) oppure tutti forniti di una linguetta detta ligula (es. Taraxacum ) o, infine, essere tubulosi al centro e ligulati alla periferia (es. margherita). La famiglia è diffusa in tutto il mondo, ad eccezione dell’Antartide, ed è particolarmente rappresentate nelle regioni aride tropicali e subtropicali ( Artemisia ), nelle regioni mediterranee, nel Messico, nella regione del Capo in Sud-Africa e concorre alla formazione di foreste e praterie dell’Africa, del sud-America e dell’Australia. Cladistics and classification" (Anderberg 1994), presents an apparently rigorous foundation for future research on the systematics within this tribe. Authors who use cladistic methodologies to reconstruct phylogeny will be tempted to select sister taxa as outgroups according to the published 'phylogenetic' position of these in relation to their ingroup taxa. -

Stuessy, inspired by the increased focus on synantherology in the 70's, highlighted in the inter- national symposium on The Biology and Chemistry of the Compositae held in Reading, England, in July 1975. The proceedings formed a two-volume publi- cation ("1977", but actually 1978), which gives an overview of the family and serves as a useful reference work and a basis for further research. I995 1 ASSOClATlON OF SOCIETIES FOR GROWING AUSTRALIAN PLANTS THE AUSTRALIAN DAISY STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER NO. 41 Dear Members, Whilst browsing through early copies of our Newsletter to check when Ijoined ADSG a few lines caught my eye .... 'A seed bank is an insurance against future loss. In general seeds of Asteraceae seem to remain viable for many years, so if 6.muelleroides colonies wetre to be wiped out by a succession of bad years, we would have the ability to refurbish the habitatl' The final point states, 'Once we have acquired seed of a species, as a Study Group, we should be self-sufficient thereafter.' These quotes are taken from an article written by Judy Barker in March 1984. It was very instructive to re-read these notes and to recall some of the optimism expressed at the time. Eleven years on we are a lot wiser and more experienced, and now we know that seed of numerous species does not remain viable for many years. We've learnt that seed requires storage at constant humidity and low temperature. We've also discovered that many Asteraceae species hybridise readily (especially brachyscomes). We know it is difficult to maintain gene diversity in a population under cultivation in our back gardens as seed seems to lose its viability over a number of generations. \ Needless to say, the goals for our seed bank are essentially as outlined in Judy's article, i.e. the aim is to build up a seed saurce. -

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Date DE-6 (2/88) VEGETABLE SHEEP: A CHEMOSYSTEMATIC STUDY OF THE CASSINIINAE It is well known that there are few places in the Asteraceae where generic limits are more difficult to apply in practice than in the tribe Gnaphalieae subtribe Cassiniinae. This is the subtribe of the paper daisies, the Edelweiss, the cudweeds. These species are characterised by discoid floral heads with papery involucral bracts. This thesis presents the results of an investigation of the flavonoid chemistry of the major species present in Australasia from which an attempt to infer taxonomic relationships among the species based on the combination of chemical, morphological and ecological characters is made.
