Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. The finest American author of his generation. --Sunday Mail [David Mamet s] writing, like his life, brings an intellectual sensibility to a working-class world. Mamet employs Aristotle s rules of drama to write about petty thieves and sleazy salesmen; he composes free verse out of grunts, sighs, obscenities and sentence fragments. In both his stark writing style and his fascination with the male tribe . Mamet resembles Ernest Hemingway more, perhaps, than any writer of his generation. --New York The Penitent follows the story of an acclaimed psychiatrist who refuses to testify in court on behalf of his patient--an act that might undo everything he s worked for. Here, David Mamet is in his wheelhouse--examining and undermining systems of power and the impact they have on individuals caught in their grasp. An exciting return for this playwright to the Atlantic Theater Company, which he helped found in 1985. David Mamet is an American playwright, director and screenwriter whose most notable works include Glengarry Glen Ross (Pulitzer Prize for Drama), American Bualo, Speed-the-Plow, Oleanna, November, Race, and The Anarchist. Besides the film adaptations for his plays, his major screenwriting credits include The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Verdict, Rising Sun, Wag the Dog, and Hannibal. Over the course of his prolific career, Mamet has earned Tony Award nominations, Academy Award nominations, Drama Desk Awards and Screenwriter of the Year from the London Critics Circle Film Awards. The author pays special attention here (for the first time in English-language scholarship) to the subject of salesmen or selling as depicted in Mamet’s drama and earlier in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh, and Tennes- see Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire—each of which also features a salesman among its characters. Key words: David Mamet; Glengarry Glen Ross; American drama; Selling/salesmanship; Americanism; Death of a Salesman; The Iceman Cometh; A Streetcar Named Desire. Introduction: David Mamet’s Drama This essay will first placeGlengarry Glen Ross (1983) in the context of David Mamet’s oeuvre and then discuss the play in detail, before going on to treat the combined subject of salesmen or selling, economic capitalism, and even U.S. foreign policy as they are depicted or intimated not only in Glengarry but in earlier American drama (a subject previously undiscussed in English-language scholarship). I am thinking here of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman (1949), Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Co- meth (1946), and Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire (1947)—each of which also features a salesman among its main characters.

“CAN’T HELP SINGING”: THE “MODERN” OPERA DIVA IN HOLLYWOOD FILM, 1930–1950 Gina Bombola A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Tim Carter Mark Katz Chérie Rivers Ndaliko Jocelyn Neal ©2017 Gina Bombola ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Gina Bombola: “Can’t Help Singing”: The “Modern” Opera Diva in Hollywood Film, 1930–1950 (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) Following the release of Columbia Pictures’ surprise smash hit, One Night of Love (1934), major Hollywood studios sought to cash in on the public’s burgeoning interest in films featuring opera singers. For a brief period thereafter, renowned Metropolitan Opera artists such as Grace Moore and Lily Pons fared well at the box office, bringing “elite” musical culture to general audiences for a relatively inexpensive price. By the 1940s, however, the studios began grooming their own operatic actresses instead of transplanting celebrities from the stage. Stars such as Deanna Durbin, Kathryn Grayson, and Jane Powell thereby became ambassadors of opera from the highly commercial studio lot. My dissertation traces the shifts in film production and marketing of operatic singers in association with the rise of such cultural phenomena as the music-appreciation movement, all contextualized within the changing social and political landscapes of the United States spanning the Great Depression to the Cold War. Drawing on a variety of methodologies—including, among others, archival research, film analysis, feminist criticisms, and social theory—I argue that Hollywood framed opera as less of a European theatrical art performed in elite venues and more of a democratic, albeit still white, musical tradition that could be sung by talented individuals in any location.

It was my first semester of grad school, and we were discussing the potential pitfalls in producing such an iconic play. The central dynamic of characters Stanley and Blanche was a key point of conversation. After a build in both sexual and more aggressive tension between the two of them, the penultimate scene sees Stanley coming onto Blanche, with her rebuking his advances and threatening to hurt him if he comes any closer.

  • Bloomfield, the Poetry of Interpretation
The Poetry of Interpretation: Exegetical Lyric after the English Reformation Gabriel Bloomfield Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Gabriel Bloomfield All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Poetry of Interpretation: Exegetical Lyric after the English Reformation Gabriel Bloomfield “The Poetry of Interpretation” writes a pre-history of the twentieth-century phenomenon of close reading by interpreting the devotional poetry of the English Renaissance in the context of the period’s exegetical literatures. The chapters explore a range of hermeneutic methods that allowed preachers and commentators, writing in the wake of the Reformation’s turn to the “literal sense” of scripture, to grapple with and clarify the bible’s “darke texts.” I argue that early modern religious poets—principally Anne Lock, John Donne, George Herbert, William Alabaster, and John Milton—absorbed these same methods into their compositional practices, merging the arts of poesis and exegesis. Consistently skeptical about the very project they undertake, however, these poets became not just practitioners but theorists of interpretive method. Situated at the intersection of religious history, hermeneutics, and poetics, this study develops a new understanding of lyric’s formal operations while intimating an alternative history of the discipline of literary criticism. APPROPRIATING THE RESTORATION HERO(INE): INTERTEXTUALITY AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF GENDER IDENTITY, 1677-1759 BY MARILYN MARIE HOLGUIN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Robert Markley, Co-Chair Associate Professor Anthony Pollock, Co-Chair Associate Professor Catharine Gray Associate Professor Lisa Freeman, University of Illinois, Chicago II ABSTRACT My dissertation considers how and why representations of female suffering in Restoration tragedy had a profound impact on the development of mid-eighteenth century novels and plays, focusing primarily on the work of Aphra Behn, Thomas Southerne, John Dryden, Samuel Richardson and David Garrick. Previous scholarship on Restoration “she-tragedies” has tended to emphasize how their heroines’ descent into hysteria, madness, and death implies a total loss of female agency and power. My project challenges this reigning interpretation: through detailed readings of Richardson’s and Garrick’s adaptations of Restoration tragedy, I argue that these influential mid-century authors transform the spectacle of female suffering into a resource for female empowerment and authority over the public sphere. My four chapters analyze Restoration tragic female characters as strongly influencing eighteenth-century writers, who appropriated and adapted them in relation to changing cultural tastes, especially
