1 Las Vegas Academy Guitar Program

The Beginning

The guitar program at the Las Vegas Academy began at the start of the 2002-03 school year with the following 29 guitar majors.

Jeremy Gorlin, Keith Hardin and Barry Provost were in guitar class with Mr. Swick at Palo Verde and came to LVA the same time Mr. Swick joined the faculty at LVA.

Stephen Boggioni, Nick Giordano and Sarah O’Malley were guitar students with Mr. Swick at Rogich Middle School and came to LVA as freshmen.

The First LVA Guitar Quartet

The first LVA Guitar Quartet consisted of Keith Hardin, Jeremy Gorlin, Kylee Andreasen and Eli Bloeker. Keith, Jeremy and Kylee had been in a quartet together at Palo Verde the previous year before transferring to LVA. The quartet performed at numerous conventions and special events the first year of its existence at LVA.

4 The First Senior Guitarist to Receive the Principal’s Award

Eli Bloeker was the recipient of the first Principal’s Award presented to a senior guitar major. Eli received this award at Senior Awards Night in the spring of 2003.

Outstanding Accomplishments the First Year 2002-03

1. Twenty-six out of the twenty-eight guitar students who qualified for the Nevada Music Educators Association All-State Solo & Ensemble were LVA guitar students. 2. The advanced guitar ensemble performed at the 2003 Winter NAMM Convention as part of a GAMA presentation. 3. The advanced guitar ensemble appeared on Fender Musical Instrument Corp.’s guitar education DVD. 4. LVA music department received its third Gold Grammy Award. 5. Recorded two CD’s, The First Year 2003, which features 12 tracks of selected large ensemble pieces by both Varsity 1 and Varsity 2, and LVA Guitar Solo & Ensemble 2003 featuring the students who received a Superior Rating at Solo & Ensemble in February, 2003. 6. Hosted the 2nd Annual CCSD Director’s Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble

The first performance given by the LVA guitar program was on October 22, 2002 in the Band Room at 7:00 p.m. Approximately fifty people were in attendance for this performance. This performance was the first guitar recital featuring guitar soloists and small ensembles.

The following students are the first to complete four years as guitar majors at LVA. These students were freshmen the year the guitar program at LVA began.

First to Graduate with 7 Years of Classroom Guitar

As mentioned earlier, Kylee Andreasen was the first student in the state of Nevada and possible the U.S. to graduate from high school having completed seven years of classroom guitar. She began her first guitar class in the sixth grade at Becker MS with teacher, Bob Morris. She completed three years of guitar at Becker MS and started high school at Palo Verde HS.

7 Kylee was placed in the Intermediate Guitar class her freshman year at Palo Verde. Her teacher at Palo Verde was Bill Swick. When Mr. Swick transferred to the Las Vegas Academy in 2002, Kylee followed and was placed in the first advanced guitar class at LVA. She remained in that class the following three years. Kylee was also a member of the Palo Verde HS Guitar Quartet her freshman year and was a member of the LVA Guitar Quartet all three years she attended LVA.

During the final month of her senior year, Kylee was awarded a special trophy created in the custom shop of Fender Musical Instruments, Corp. to recognize her accomplishment of being the first to graduate with seven years of classroom guitar. This special trophy was presented by her first guitar teacher, Mr. Bob Morris, who has left the teaching profession and is currently the Coordinator of Guitar Education for Fender Musical Instruments, Corp.

Upon graduation of LVA, Kylee was accepted into the music education program at Utah State where she currently studies with Mike Christiansen.

First African American to Graduate with 7 Years of Classroom Guitar

Walter Turner III began guitar in the sixth grade at Lied Middle School with teacher Michael Fredrickson. Walter completed three years of classroom guitar in middle school. Upon graduation from Lied MS, Walter was accepted into the guitar program at the Las Vegas Academy in 2002, the first year of the guitar program.

Of the eight guitar majors to first graduate in 2006 with four years of classroom guitar at LVA, Walter Turner III is the only student with a total of seven years of classroom guitar. He is the second student in the state of Nevada and possibly the U.S. to graduate with seven years of guitar. However, he is the first Afro-American to complete this task.

First Student to Graduate with 6 Years of Classroom Guitar with Mr. Swick

Stephen Boggioni is the first student to graduate high school having attended six years of classroom guitar with Mr. Swick. He studied with Mr. Swick for two years at Rogich Middle School and four years at LVA.

8 YEAR TWO 2003-04

The LVA Guitar Program started with twenty-nine guitar majors in the Fall of 2002. Year two, Fall of 2003, began with fifty-seven guitar majors, just one student short of doubling in size of the previous year.

The Second LVA Guitar Quartet

The first LVA Guitar Quartet consisted of Keith Hardin, Jeremy Gorlin, Kylee Andreasen and Eli Bloeker. Eli graduated after the first year of guitar at LVA. Keith, Jeremy and Kylee remained members of the LVA Guitar Quartet. Eli’s chair was replaced by Barry Provost. The quartet was featured at the Renaissance Faire in Las Vegas in the fall of 2003. This quartet was the first in the state of Nevada to receive the Nevada Music Educators Association’s Command Performance. This quartet also performed in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Bi-Annual National Music Educators National Conference. Both events occurred in the spring of 2004. This quartet also recorded the first LVA Guitar Quartet CD.

The Second Senior Guitarist to Receive the Principal’s Award

Keith Hardin was the recipient of the second Principal’s Award presented to a senior guitar major. Keith received this award at Senior Awards Night in the spring of 2004.

1. Forty-nine guitar students who qualified for the Nevada Music Educators Association All-State Solo & Ensemble were LVA guitar students. 2. The advanced guitar ensemble attended the 2004 Winter NAMM Convention. 3. The LVA Guitar Quartet won Command Performance at the NMEA annual conference in Las Vegas and performed at the MENC Bi-Annual National Conference in Minneapolis, MN. 4. LVA music department received a Grammy Signature School Award. 5. The LVA Guitar Quartet recorded the first LVA Quartet CD. 6. The 49 guitar students who qualified for All-State recorded a 2-Disk CD of their All- State performances. A 3rd disk was added to the set of the Advanced Guitar Ensemble performing large ensemble pieces. 7. Hosted the 3rd Annual CCSD Director’s Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble Festival.

16 YEAR THREE 2004-05

Year two of The LVA Guitar Program started with fifty-seven guitar majors. Year three began with eighty-two guitar majors, a 65% increase from the previous year.

The second LVA Guitar Quartet consisted of Keith Hardin, Jeremy Gorlin, Kylee Andreasen and Barry Provost. Keith, Jeremy and Barry graduated in 2004 leaving Kylee as the only remaining member of the LVA Guitar Quartet. The three empty chairs were filled by Rebecca Neher, Shane Olivas and Jeckster Rico. The quartet was invited to perform at the first pre-college guitar ensemble at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. This quartet also took first place in the high school division at the University of Texas- Brownsville National Guitar Ensemble Competition. The quartet qualified for the NMEA All- State Solo & Ensemble festival. This quartet recorded the second LVA Guitar Quartet CD.

The First LVA Guitar Trio

The first LVA Guitar Trio was created during the 2004-05 school year. The original members were Nick Giordano, Addison Costella and Derek Belmont. There was also a sophomore guitar trio created this year as well. The members were David Malone, Zak Ford and Travis Lyons.

The Third Senior Guitarist to Receive the Principal’s Award

Kylee Andreasen was the recipient of the third Principal’s Award presented to a senior guitar major. Kylee received this award at Senior Awards Night in the spring of 2005.

Outstanding Accomplishments the Third Year 2004-05

1. Thirty LVA guitar students qualified for the Nevada Music Educators Association All-State Solo & Ensemble. 2. The advanced guitar ensemble attended the 2005 Winter NAMM Convention. 3. LVA music department received a Grammy Signature Gold School Award. 4. The LVA Guitar Quartet recorded the second LVA Quartet CD. 5. The 30 guitar students who qualified for All-State recorded a CD of their All-State performances. 6. The guitar program received the first Gibson Education Award of $5,000. 7. The LVA Guitar Quartet and LVA Guitar Trio were invited to perform at the first pre-college guitar festival at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles 8. The LVA Guitar Quartet took first place in the high school division of the University of Texas-Brownsville National Guitar Ensemble Competition 9. Kylee Andreasen received the Fender Award for being the first guitar student to complete seven consecutive years of classroom guitar. 10. Hosted the 4th Annual CCSD Director’s Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble 11. Created the LVA Guitar Trio 12. Began using Finale Performance Assessment for Playing Tests

The Fourth LVA Guitar Quartet

The third LVA Guitar Quartet consisted of Kylee Andreasen, Rebecca Neher, Shane Olivas and Jeckster Rico. Kylee graduated in 2005 and her vacated chair was filled by Derek Belmont. This quartet was invited to perform at the second pre-college guitar ensemble at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. This quartet was also invited to perform for the National Tri-M conference as a part of the Bi-Annual Music Educators National Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. The quartet received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble festival.

The Second LVA Guitar Trio

The sophomore guitar trio created in 2005 became the official LVA Guitar Trio. This trio played numerous performances in the community. The members were David Malone, Zak Ford and Travis Lyons. They were also invited to perform at the second pre-college guitar ensemble at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. They also received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble festival.

Senior Guitarists Who Performed All Four Years in Varsity 3

Shane Olivas and Jeckster Rico were the first guitar students at LVA to complete all four years as members of the Advanced (Varsity 3) Guitar Ensemble. Addison Costella technically performed in the Advanced Guitar Ensemble for all four years as well. Addison left LVA temporarily and later returned.

WalterTurner III was awarded a plaque for the first African American guitar student to complete seven consecutive years of classroom guitar. 7. Hosted the 5th Annual CCSD Director’s Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble 8. Performed four recitals this year as well as four concerts. The final recital was the first Senior Recital 9. Purchased 24 Alverez electric, nylon-string cutaway guitars, 32-channel Behringer mixer, Crown power amplifier and 2 JBL speakers for better sound. 10. Hosted the first CCSD Guitar Ensemble Festival 11. Introduced the Swickster Fingerboard System into the classroom 12. Rebecca Neher was awarded a Down Beat Magazine award for “Best Classical Soloist.”

47 The Fifth LVA Guitar Quartet

The fifth LVA Guitar Quartet was the second quartet in which all of the members were seniors. This quartet was made up of Bobby Baker, Zak Ford, Travis Lyons and David Malone. At the end of the first semester, Travis Lyons left LVA unexpectedly and was replaced with Brendyn Adams. This quartet competed in a national UTB guitar ensemble festival in Brownsville, TX where they received third place. The quartet received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2007 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. .

The Third LVA Guitar Trio

The members of the third LVA Guitar Trio were senior Matthew Charles and juniors Michael Romano and Byron Tabor. This trio made regular performances at the Nathan Adelson Hospice, the Winchester Community Center, and several on-campus events. The trio received an Excellent Rating at the CCSD Solo & Ensemble Festival.

The First LVA Guitar Duo

The members of the first LVA Guitar Duo were senior Amanda Caporicci and senior Ben Reynolds. This duo made regular performances at the Nathan Adelson Hospice, the Winchester Community Center, and several on-campus events. The duo received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2007 LVA “Encore Performance” CD.

The Fifth Senior Guitarist to Receive the Principal’s Award

Amanda Caporicci was the recipient of the fifth Principal’s Award presented to a senior guitar major. Amanda received this award at Senior Awards Night in the spring of 2007. This award is now known as the Principal’s “Academy Award.”

Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Andrea Segovia” Award

Amanda Caporicci, Zak Ford and David Malone each received the “Andrea Segovia” award for excellence as a classical guitarist at the second Senior Recital awards presentation.

48 Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Wes Montgomery” Award

Brendyn Adams and Matthew Charles were the first to receive the “Wes Montgomery” award for excellence as a jazz guitarist at the second Senior Recital awards presentation.

Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Chet Atkins” Award

Bobby Baker was the first to receive the “Chet Atkins” award for excellence as a finger-style guitarist at the second Senior Recital awards presentation.

Senior Guitarists Who Performed All Four Years in Varsity 3

Brendyn Adams and Amanda Caporicci joined the Advanced Guitar Ensemble (Varsity 3) their freshmen year and remained in the advanced ensemble the entire four years. They join Shane Olivas, Jeckster Rico and Addison Costella in accomplishing this feat. As the skill levels rise and the performance requirements elevate, it is possible these five students will be the only students to make this claim. No freshmen have been placed into Varsity 3 in the past three years.

Senior Guitarists Who Graduated with Seven Years of Classroom Guitar in Clark County, NV

Brendyn Adams, Amanda Caporicci, Zak Ford, and Rob McCann graduated from LVA having completed seven years of classroom guitar in Clark County, Nevada.

Outstanding Accomplishments the Fifth Year 2006-07

1. Forty LVA guitar students qualified for the Nevada Music Educators Association All-State Solo & Ensemble. 2. Amanda Caporicci won “Command Performance”-which means best high school guitarist in the state of Nevada awarded by the Nevada Music Educators Association. 3. The 40 guitar students who qualified for All-State recorded a CD of their All-State performances, the “2007 Solo & Ensemble Encore Performance.” 4. The LVA Guitar Advanced Guitar Ensemble (Varsity 3) was invited to perform at the third annual pre-college guitar festival at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles 5. Hosted the 6th Annual CCSD Directors’ Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble 6. Performed four recitals this year as well as four concerts. The final recital was the first Senior Recital 7. Purchased 10 Alverez electric, nylon-string cutaway guitars, 32-channel Carvin mixer. 8. Hosted the second annual 2-day CCSD Guitar Ensemble Festival

49 9. Mr. Swick spoke at the national Guitar Foundation of America conference in Columbus, GA in October, 2006 10. Mr. Swick presented at the Nevada Music Educators Association state convention in April, 2007 11. Mr. Swick accepted the role of CCSD Guitar Task Force Chair 12. Varsity 3 Guitar Ensemble was selected through a national competition to perform at the Guitar Foundation of America conference in October, 2007 in the Youth Showcase performance. 13. LVA Guitar Duo and Guitar Quartet competed in the University of Texas- Brownsville national guitar ensemble festival and took third place in each category.

60 The Sixth LVA Guitar Quartet

The sixth LVA Guitar Quartet was the third quartet in which all of the members were seniors. This year, the quartet was refered to as the LVA Senior Guitar Quartet. This quartet was made up of Alex Haase, Nico Salgado, CJ Sandy and Byron Tabor. The quartet received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2008 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The quartet made a number of appearances including the annual “Road Show”, 2 recitals and regular performances at the Nathan Adelson Hospice. The Sr. Quartet received an Excellent Rating at the South Bay Guitar Festival in San Jose, CA. .

The First LVA Jr. Guitar Quartet

This year marked the first year to have a second guitar quartet made up of all juniors. This quartet has been deemed the LVA Jr. Guitar Quartet. The quartet members were Alex Lamonte, Katrina Leshan, Brandon Russo and Andrew Silva. The quartet received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and won Command Performance (Best in the State of Nevada). The quartet has a track on the 2008 LVA “Encore Performance” CD as well as each of the four members who individually received Superior Ratings at NMEA. The Jr. Quartet also received a Superior Rating at the South Bay Guitar Festival in San Jose, CA.

Both duos received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appear on the 2008 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The Gordon/Lewis duo received an Excellent Rating at the South Bay Guitar Festival in San Jose, CA. The McGurk/Nielsen duo received a Good Rating at the same festival.

The Sixth Senior Guitarist to Receive the Principal’s Award

Michael Romano was the recipient of the sixth Principal’s Award presented to a senior guitar major. Michael received this award at Senior Awards Night in the spring of 2008. This award is now known as the Principal’s “Academy Award.”

Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Andrea Segovia” Award

Mathew Gonzales, Lucas Gordon and Alex Nielsen each received the “Andrea Segovia” award for excellence as a classical guitarist at the third Senior Recital awards presentation.

Senior Guitarists Who Graduated with Seven Years of Classroom Guitar in Clark County, NV

Frank Bonomo, Lucas Gordon, Ryan Lewis, Alex Nielsen, CJ Sandy and Chaz Schoenbeck graduated from LVA having completed seven years of classroom guitar in Clark County, Nevada.

Outstanding Accomplishments the Sixth Year 2007-08

1. Seventeen LVA guitar students qualified for the Nevada Music Educators Association All-State Solo & Ensemble. 2. The Jr. Guitar Quartet, Alex Lamonte, Katrina Leshan, Brandon Russo and Andrew Silve won “Command Performance”-which means best high school guitarist in the state of Nevada awarded by the Nevada Music Educators Association. 3. The 17 guitar students who qualified for All-State recorded a CD of their All-State performances, the “2008 Solo & Ensemble Encore Performance.” 4. The LVA Guitar Advanced Guitar Ensemble (Varsity 3) was invited to perform at the international Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) convention in Los Angeles, CA as part of the Youth Showcase in October, 2007. 5. The LVA Guitar Advanced Guitar Ensemble (Varsity 3) received a Superior Rating at the South Bay Guitar Festival in San Jose, CA in March, 2008. 6. Hosted the 7th Annual CCSD Directors’ Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble with guest guitarist, Raymond Williams. 7. Performed three recitals this year as well as four concerts. The final recital was the Senior Recital 8. 72 The Second LVA Senior Guitar Quartet (Seventh LVA Guitar Quartet)

The second LVA Senior Guitar Quartet was made up of Katrina Leshan, Dani Plecenik, Brandon Russo and Andrew Silva. The quartet received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2009 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The quartet made a number of appearances, recitals and on and off- campus performances.

The Second LVA Jr. Guitar Quartet

The second LVA Junior Guitar Quartet members were Carter Miller, Derek Oshita, Chris Sierchio and Louis Syrovy. The quartet received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All- State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2009 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The quartet made a number of appearances throughout the year including regular performances at Border’s Bookstore.

The Second Junior Guitar Trio (Fourth LVA Guitar Trio)

The second LVA Junior Guitar Trio members were Adrian Barraza , Daniel Casados and Brendan Dicesare. The trio received an Excellent Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival. The trio performed periodically for special events in the community.

The Fourth LVA Guitar Duo

This year, there was a Junior Guitar Duo which consisted of Shawn Bailey and Kevin Ginty. The duo received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2009 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The duo performed periodically for special events in the community including one wedding.

The Seventh Senior Guitarist to Receive the Academy Award For Outstanding Guitarist of the Year

Katrina Leshan was the recipient of the seventh Academy Award presented to a senior guitar major. Katrina received this award at Senior Awards Night in the spring of 2009. Her name has been added to the perpetual plaque for the Outstanding Guitarist of the Year for 2008-09.

Senior Guitarists Who Graduated with Seven Years of Classroom Guitar in Clark County, NV

There was a time in the history of guitar education in Nevada that graduating with seven years of classroom guitar was unique. Kylee Andreasen was the first in Nevada to accomplish this feat. This year, more than half of the fifteen graduating guitar majors from LVA are graduating with seven years of classroom guitar. This will become more common as the years progress and therefore has been voted by the executive board of the LVA Guitar Club to be dropped from Senior Awards.

74 Senior Guitarists Who Have Completed 16 Books in the Solo Guitar Repertoire Series

The following senior guitar majors completed 16 Books in the Solo Guitar Repertoire Series during their four years at LVA: Niesha Jones, Andy Kaimi, Katrina Leshan, Samantha Piscopo and Andrew Silva. Each received a plaque for this outstanding accomplishment.

Received 100% on 16 or More Playing Tests

Every other week throughout the school year, guitar students perform a bi-weekly playing test consisting of two graduated studies. The exams on performed on a guitar that is attached to a computer. The software in the computer does the scoring. It is extremely accurate. This is a new category to recognize those students who score 16 or more perfect scores during the school year. The following students score 16 or more perfect scores on their bi-weekly playing tests.

The seniors of the LVA Guitar Advanced Guitar Ensemble (Varsity 3) were invited to perform at NAMM (National Association of Music Merchandisers) national Winter Convention in Anaheim, CA 5. The LVA Advanced Guitar Ensemble (Varsity 3) performed at the Loyola Marymount University Guitar Festival in Los Angeles, CA 6. The LVA Advanced Guitar Ensemble performed in the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel for the company Avid as part of the National Broadcasters Association’s National Convention

Purchased 4 Ibanez solid body electric guitars, 2 LaPetrie classical guitars, 4 Yamaha speaker cabinets, plastic shell for drums, and a drum machine amplifier. 10. Hosted the fourth annual 2-day CCSD Guitar Ensemble Festival 11. Garrett Winslow, owner of Regency Flooring, gave away a trip for two on a cruise to Mexico, a digital camera, an electric guitar and dinner for two in a local restaurant as part of year-long campaign to build the audiences at the LVA guitar concerts 12. The Bailey Family and Perpetual Wealth gave away a 3-day trip to one of 24 destinations at each of the four concerts during the year as part of a year-long campaign to build the audiences at the LVA guitar concerts. 13. The music department won its sixth Gold GRAMMY award 14. Mr. Swick continued the role of CCSD Guitar Task Force Chair, LVA Music Department Facilitator, CCSD Festival Chair and continued teaching at Sunset High School as the guitar teacher for the evening class 15. Mr. Swick appeared on the cover of the School Band & Orchestra magazine along with a 4-page article with pictures of students performing at the NAMM Convention in Anaheim, CA. 16. Mr. Swick performed with Andrew York at the national Guitar Foundation of American conference in Ithaca, NY in June, 2009. 17. 85 The Third LVA Senior Guitar Quartet (Eighth LVA Guitar Quartet)

The third LVA Senior Guitar Quartet was made up of Carter Miller, Derek Oshita, Chris Sierchio and Louis Syrovy. The quartet received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2010 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The quartet made a number of appearances, recitals and performances both on and off campus . The Third LVA Junior Guitar Quartet

The third LVA Junior Guitar Quartet members were Zach Blakeslee Reid, Evan Croteau, Eddie De Guzman and D. J. Galante. The quartet received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2010 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The quarter began as the unofficial Sophomore Guitar Quartet during the 2008-09 school year. The quartet made a number of appearances throughout the year.

The First Senior Guitar Trio (Fifth LVA Guitar Trio)

The first LVA Senior Guitar Trio members were Adrian Barraza , Daniel Casados and Brendan Dicesare. The trio received a Superior Rating in the NMEA All-State Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2010 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The trio began as the Junior Trio during the 2008-09 school year. The trio performed periodically for special events in the community.

The Fifth, Sixth & Seventh LVA Guitar Duos

This year, there was a Senior Guitar Duo which consisted of Shawn Bailey and Kevin Ginty. The two began as a Junior Guitar Duo during the 2008-09 school year. The duo performed in the November, 2009 Guitar Recital and the May 6, 2010 Senior Recital.

There were also two Junior Guitar Duos. Candice Bain and Lauren Finley-Jacob made one duo. The second duo consisted of Josh Ivy and Michael Ghisilieri. Both duos performed in the November, 2009 Guitar Recital.

The Eighth Senior Guitarist to Receive the Academy Award For Outstanding Guitarist of the Year

Louis Syrovy was the recipient of the eighth Academy Award presented to a senior guitar major. Louis received this award at Senior Awards Night in the May of 2010. His name has been added to the perpetual plaque for the Outstanding Guitarist of the Year for 2009-10.

Senior Guitarist to Receive the LVA “Andrea Segovia” Award

Louis Syrovy received the “Andrea Segovia” award for excellence as a classical guitarist at the Seniors’ Choice Concert awards presentation. His name has been added to the perpetual plaque as the recipient of the 2009-10 Andre Segovia Award.

Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Wes Montgomery” Award

Adrain Barraza and Daniel Casados each received the “Wes Montgomery” award for excellence as jazz guitarists at the fifth Senior awards presentation. Both names have been added to the perpetual plaque as the recipients of the 2009-10 Wes Montgomery Award.

Senior Guitarist to Receive the LVA “Chet Atkins” Award

No seniors qualified for the “Chet Atkins” award for the 2009-10 school year.

Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Steve Vai” Award

Shawn Bailey, Adrain Barraza, Ian Fluellen and Carter Miller each received the “Steve Vai” award for excellence as contemporary guitarists. This was the second year for this award to be given. The names of all four recipients have been added to the perpetual plaque for receiving the 2009-10 Steve Vai award.

Senior Guitarists Who Have Completed 17 Books in the Solo Guitar Repertoire Series

This year, the number of solo books to be completed for recognition was raised from 16 to 17. The following senior guitar majors completed 17 Books in the Solo Guitar Repertoire Series during their four years at LVA: Shawn Bailey, Skylar Caporicci, Kevin Ginty, Chris Sierchio and Louis Syrovy. Each received a plaque for this outstanding accomplishment.

“Most Versatile Musician” Award

This was a new award given this year to two outstanding seniors who really deserved to be recognized for their abilities to play multiple instruments well. Both students performed on various concerts playing various instruments including guitar, electric bass and drums. This special award went to Ricky Martinez and Skylar Caporicci. Each received a plaque for this outstanding accomplishment.

87 Outstanding Parent Volunteers

This is not an annual award, but is given to outstanding parent volunteers when deemed appropriate. This year’s award went to Garrett and Christine Winslow for their outstanding support for the past four years. They have contributed financially, have assisted in ticket sales regularly, Garrett has been our concert announcer numerous times, Garrett has taken countless photos of our students over the past four years, etc. Their contributions are too numerous to list.

Received 100% on 16 or More Playing Tests

Every other week throughout the school year, guitar students perform a bi-weekly playing test consisting of two graduated studies. The exams are performed on a guitar that is attached to a computer. The software in the computer does the scoring. It is extremely accurate. This is a new category to recognize those students who scored 16 or more perfect scores during the school year. The following students scored 16 or more perfect scores on their bi-weekly playing tests. Each student receives 32 playing test grades during the school year. This special recognition is for those students who received a perfect score at least half or 50% of the time. Many students exceeded that percentage. The “Double Century” Club

The “Double Century” club was something new added this year. Along with counting how many 100’s each student has for the year from the above playing tests, record was also kept for each student who made two consecutive 100’s in the same week, thus the name, “Double Century” club. The following students qualified for the club at least once during the school year. The number in parenthesis is the number of weeks in which each person qualified. Outstanding Accomplishments the Eighth Year 2009-2010

1. Four of the five guitar spots for the Nevada Music Educators Association Command Performance were filled by LVA guitar students. 2. The 34 guitar students who qualified for All-State recorded a CD of their All-State performances, the “2010 Solo & Ensemble Encore Performance.” This year’s recording was a 2-disc set with 23 tracks. 3. Varsity 3 was invited and attended the “La Guitarra” Guitar Festival in Santa Maria, California. This festival is held bi-annually and features legendary guitarists from around the world. LVA students were the only high school students invited. 4. Varsity 3 performed at the Loyola Marymount University Guitar Festival in Los Angeles, CA. 5. Hosted the 9th Annual CCSD Directors’ Choice Guitar Ensemble with guest guitarists, Louis Syrovy performing with a string quartet. 6. Performed two recitals and four concerts. 7. Purchased the Yamaha Silent Guitar Lab. LVA is the first high school in the nation to have a Yamaha silent guitar lab with 32 stations. The guitars were also used during concerts. 8. Hosted the fifth annual 2-day CCSD Guitar Ensemble Festival. Varsity 2 and Varsity 3 both received Superior Ratings. They were the only two ensembles at the festival to receive Superior Ratings.

89 9. The Bailey Family and Perpetual Wealth gave away a 3-day trip to one of 24 destinations at each of the four concerts during the year. 10. The music department won its seventh Gold GRAMMY award. 11. Mr. Swick continued the role of CCSD Guitar Task Force Chair, LVA Music Department Chair, CCSD Festival Chair and continued teaching at Sunset High School as the guitar teacher for the evening classes. Mr. Swick also continued his position as board member of the pre-college Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) education board and the educational board with the Guitar Foundation of Las Vegas. 12. Mr. Swick performed with Brian Head at the national Guitar Foundation of America conference in Austin, TX in June, 2010. 13. LVA Guitar Club sponsored the second 2-Day Summer Guitar Festival in June, 2010 featuring Corey Christiansen, Raymond Williams and Mel Hallam.

Mr. Swick continued the role of CCSD Guitar Task Force Chair, LVA Music Department Chair, CCSD Festival Chair and continued teaching at Sunset High School as the guitar teacher for the evening classes. Mr. Swick also continued his position as board member of the pre-college Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) education board and the educational board with the Guitar Foundation of Las Vegas. He also became a member of the guitar education board for the American String Teachers’ Association. 8. It was decided between Yamaha Musical Instruments and Mr. Swick to return the Yamaha Silent Guitar Lab. After two years of working with the lab, both parties agreed that the lab did not fulfill the promises made. Yamaha Musical Instruments is recognized for maintaining its high standards and standing behind its products. Mr.Swick likes the lab learning environment and will continue searching for a replacement that offers 21st century technology. 9. The guitar department purchased a 16-channel Carvin stereo mixer and Carvin power amp in addition to the already owned 32-channel mixer to amplify the ever growing concerts when using orchestral strings and additional musical instruments.

113 The Fifth LVA Senior Guitar Quartet (Tenth LVA Guitar Quartet)

The fifth LVA Senior Guitar Quartet was made up of Victoria Almanzan, Saraya Bennett, Patricia Girroir and Niki Shadoan. This award-winning quartet took Second Place at the University of Texas-Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Competition, the nation’s most competitive guitar festival. The quartet also received two Superior Ratings at Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2012 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The quartet made a number of appearances, recitals and performances both on and off campus.

The Fifth LVA Junior Guitar Quartet

The fifth LVA Junior Guitar Quartet members were Hailey Axberg, Anthony Farris, Austin Longworth and Cheyenne Reindel.

The Senior Guitar Trio (Seventh LVA Guitar Trio)

The LVA Senior Guitar Trio members were Will Crumpacker, Shawn Jensen and Clayton Nowers. The trio received two Superior Ratings at Solo & Ensemble Festival and appears on the 2012 LVA “Encore Performance” CD.

The Tenth Senior Guitarist to Receive the Academy Award for Guitar

Thomas Velasquez was the recipient of the tenth Academy Award presented to a senior guitar major. Thomas received this award at the Senior Awards Night May 18, 2012.

Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Andrea Segovia” Award

Will Crumpacker, Niki Shadoan, Jason Wang and Austin Wyke received the “Andrea Segovia” award for excellence as classical guitarists at the Seniors’ Choice Concert awards presentation. Their names have been added to the perpetual plaque as the recipients of the 2011-12 Andre Segovia Award.

Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Wes Montgomery” Award

Zak Fisher and Spencer Smith received the “Chet Atkins” award for the 2011-12 school year. Their names have been added to the perpetual plaque as the recipients of the 2011-12 Wes Montgomery Award.

114 Senior Guitarists to Receive the LVA “Chet Atkins” Award

Spencer Smith and Camden Weisz received the “Chet Atkins” award for the 2011-12 school year. Their names have been added to the perpetual plaque as the recipients of the 2011-12 Chet Atkins Award.

Senior Guitarist to Receive the LVA “Carlos Santana” Award

Thomas Velasquez received the “Carlos Santana” award for the 2011-12 school year. His name has been added to the perpetual plaque as the recipient of the 2011-12 Carlos Santana Award.

Senior Guitarist to Receive the LVA “Steve Vai” Award

Clayton Nowers received the “Steve Vai” award for excellence as a contemporary guitarist. Clayton’s name has been added to the perpetual plaque for receiving the 2011-12 Steve Vai Award.

Senior Guitarist to Receive the LVA “Paco de Lucia” Award

Stefan Tisminezki received the “Paco de Lucia” award for excellence as a flaminco guitarist. Stefan’s name has been added to the perpetual plaque for receiving the 2011- 12 Pace de Lucia Award.

Senior Guitarists Who Have Completed 17 Books in the Solo Guitar Repertoire Series

The number of solo books to be completed for recognition is 17 over a four-year period. The following senior guitar majors completed 17 Books in the Solo Guitar Repertoire Series during their four years at LVA: Will Crumpacker, Zak Fisher, Shawn Jensen, Niki Shadoan, Aaron Solano, Stefan Tisminezki, Thomas Velasquez, Jason Wang and Austin Wyke. Each received a plaque for this outstanding accomplishment.

“Most Versatile Musician” Award

This award went to two outstanding seniors who deserved to be recognized for their abilities to play multiple instruments well. Both students performed on various concerts playing various instruments including guitar, electric bass and/or drums. This special award went to Shawn Jensen (guitar & drums) and Camden Weisz (guitar, bass & drums). Each received a plaque for this outstanding accomplishment.

115 Received 100% on 16 or More Playing Tests

Every other week throughout the school year, guitar students perform a bi-weekly playing test consisting of two graduated studies. The exams are performed on a guitar that is attached to a computer. The software in the computer does the scoring. It is extremely accurate. This is a new category to recognize those students who scored 16 or more perfect scores during the school year. The following students scored 16 or more perfect scores on their bi-weekly playing tests. Each student receives 32 playing test grades during the school year. This special recognition is for those students who received a perfect score at least half or 50% of the time. Many students exceeded that percentage. The “Double Century” Club

Along with counting how many 100’s each student has for the year from the above playing tests, record was also kept for each student who made two consecutive 100’s in the same week, thus the name, “Double Century” club. The following students qualified for the club at least once during the school year. The number in parenthesis is the number of weeks in which each person qualified.

Outstanding Accomplishments the Tenth Year 2011-2012

1. The 36 guitar students who qualified for All-State recorded a CD of their All-State performances, the “2012 Solo & Ensemble Encore Performance.” This year’s recording is a 2-Disk set with 25 tracks. 2. The LVA Senior Guitar Quartet took Second Place in the University of Texas- Brownsville National Guitar Ensemble Competition. This is the nation’s most competitive ensemble competition available for high school students. 3. Varsity 3 performed at the Loyola Marymount University Guitar Festival in Los Angeles, CA. 4. Hosted the 11th Middle School Directors’ Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble and the first High School Directors’ Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble 5. Performed two recitals and four concerts. 6. Hosted the seventh annual 2-day CCSD Guitar Ensemble Festival. Varsity 2 and Varsity 3 both received Superior Ratings. 7. Mr. Swick presented at the American String Teachers Association National Convention in Atlanta, GA this year. 10. The music department received its tenth GRAMMY Award this year. 11. The guitar department received its second DownBeat Magazine Student Award. 12. The guitar department received the first Augustine String Educational Endowment. This award will include receiving two visitations from Dr. Martha Masters from Loyola Marymount University and a specially commissioned composition for the Varsity 3 Guitar Ensemble. 13. Mr. Swick launched his own line of guitars known as the Swickster guitar. 14. The guitar department purchased 34 Swickster guitars to replace the Silent Yamaha guitars and 34 Apple Ipads to replace the silent guitar lab.

117 15. Mr. Swick was featured on “Inside Education”, Channel 8 news, and was selected by PBS to appear in the CCSD school district recruiting video as an innovative teacher.

126 The Sixth LVA Senior Guitar Quartet (Eleventh LVA Guitar Quartet)

The sixth LVA Senior Guitar Quartet was made up of Haley Axberg, Anthony Farris, Austin Longworth and Cheyenne Reindel. The quartet appears on the 2013 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. The quartet made a number of appearances, recitals and performances both on and off campus including the San Diego Guitar Teachers’ Association presentation, the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA, and the California State Teachers Union convention at the Rio Hotel.

The Sixth LVA Junior Guitar Quartet

The sixth LVA Junior Guitar Quartet members were Michael Adams, Eddie Carcamo, Julian D’Ottavio and Daniel Munoz. This quartet took first place in the CCSD/LVA Solo & Ensemble Guitar Tournament and appear on the 2013 LVA “Encore Performance” CD. This quartet was selected from a national search to perform at the 2013 Guitar Foundation of America international convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Eleventh Senior Guitarist to Receive the Academy Award for Guitar

Cody Cris was the recipient of the eleventh Academy Award presented to a senior guitar major. Cody received this award at the Senior Awards Night May 23, 2013.

No senior was awarded the “Andrea Segovia” award for the 2012-13 school year.

Senior Guitarist to Receive the LVA “Wes Montgomery” Award

Cameron Sax and Logan Tierno were awarded the “Wes Montgomery” award for the 2012-13 school year. Cameron and Logan’s names will be added to the perpetual plaque as the recipients of the 2012-13 Wes Montgomery Award.

Cody Cris, Anthony Farris and Austin Longworth received the “Steve Vai” award for excellence as a contemporary guitarist. All three names have been added to the perpetual plaque for receiving the 2012-13 Steve Vai Award.

Senior Guitarist to Receive the LVA “Paco de Lucia” Award

Dominic Rosso received the “Paco de Lucia” award for excellence as a flamenco guitarist. Dominc’s name has been added to the perpetual plaque for receiving the 2012-13 Pace de Lucia Award.

Senior Guitarists Who Have Completed 17 Books in the Solo Guitar Repertoire Series

The number of solo books to be completed for recognition is 17 over a four-year period. The following senior guitar majors completed 17 Books in the Solo Guitar Repertoire Series during their four years at LVA: Cody Cris, Anthony Farris, Austin Longworth, Cheyenne Reindel, Cameron Sax, Logan Tierno and Sean Young. Each received a plaque for this outstanding accomplishment.

Received 100% on 16 or More Playing Tests

Every other week throughout the school year, guitar students perform a bi-weekly playing test consisting of two graduated studies. The exams are performed on a guitar that is attached to a computer. The software in the computer does the scoring. It is extremely accurate. This is a new category to recognize those students who scored 16 or more perfect scores during the school year. The following students scored 16 or more perfect scores on their bi-weekly playing tests. Each student receives 32 playing test grades during the school year. This special recognition is for those students who received a perfect score at least half or 50% of the time. Many students exceeded that percentage. Outstanding Accomplishments the Eleventh Year 2012-2013

1. Mr. Swick worked with the Choice Center Leadership Program’s Giver Game to help beautify the practice rooms in Sunset and provide improvements in the music department with the $50,000 that was donated. 2. Created and hosted the first CCSD/LVA Solo & Ensemble Guitar Tournaments Round One & Round Two. The top winners performed on the annual Solo & Ensemble Encore CD. Eddie Carcamo took first place as solo guitarist. 3. Eddie Carcamo won the Nevada Music Education Association Command Performance for guitar and played on the Command Performance concert during the NMEA State Convention. 4. Varsity 3 performed at the Loyola Marymount University Guitar Festival in Los Angeles, CA. 5. Hosted the 12th Middle School Directors’ Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble and the first High School Honor Guitar Ensemble which required an audition. 6. Performed two recitals and four concerts. 7. Hosted the eighth annual 2-day CCSD Guitar Ensemble Festival. Varsity 2 and Varsity 3 both received Superior Ratings. 8. Mr. Swick continued the role of CCSD Guitar Task Force Chair, LVA Music Department Chair, CCSD Festival Chair and continued teaching at Cowan Sunset High School as the guitar teacher for the evening classes. Mr. Swick also continued his position as board member of the pre-college Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) education board as well as the guitar education board for the American String Teachers’ Association. Mr. Swick was also named Executive Director of Guitar in the Classroom. 9. Mr. Swick, along with Varsity 3, presented at the San Diego Guitar Teachers’ Association in San Diego. 10. Mr. Swick presented at the American String Teachers Association National Convention in Providence, Rhode Island this year. 11. Mr. Swick, along with Varsity 3, presented at the Winter NAMM Convention in Anaheim, CA. 12. Mr. Swick, along with the Junior Guitar Quartet, presented at the Guitar Foundation of America international convention in Louisville, Kentucky. 13. The guitar department received the first Augustine String Educational Endowment. Dr. Martha Masters from Loyola Marymount University visited LVA and performed a recital for students in the music department. Part of the endowment was the presentation of the commissioned work, “Cascade” which was performed on the Seniors’ Choice Guitar Concert on May 17.

130 14. Mr. Swick was selected to present at the National Association for Music Educators education conference in Nashville, TN. 15. Hosted the second Music College Fair for Guitar which attracted guitar faculty from around the country. Students attended master classes and had an opportunity to audition for the college faculty.

134 The Seventh LVA Senior Guitar Quartet (Twelfth LVA Guitar Quartet)

The seventh LVA Senior Guitar Quartet was made up of Michael Adams, Eddie Carcamo, Julien D’Ottavio and Daniel Munoz. The quartet appears on the 2012, 2013 and 2014 LVA “Encore Performance” CDs. The quartet made a number of appearances, recitals and performances both on and off campus including the California State Teachers Union convention at the Rio Hotel, the Public Education Foundation Gala at the Mandarin Hotel, the LVA Gala at the Rio Hotel and the Comdex Convention at the LV Hotel. This senior quartet was selected through a national competition to perform at the Guitar Foundation of America International Convention in Louisville, KT. They also took first place in the University of Texas-Brownsville Guitar Ensemble competition in Brownsville, TX. This quartet also won two DownBeat Magazine Awards, one for Best Classical Ensemble and a second one for Best Latin Group.

The Seventh LVA Junior Guitar Quartet

There were two Junior Guitar Quartets this year, both hoping to be the next Senior Quartet. The official Junior Quartet members are Cameron Fults, Noah Hanlon, Chaz Miceli and Noah Ryerson. The unofficial Junior Quartet members are Jaron Pitegoff, Samuel Ramirez, George Thompson and Noah Umeno. The latter group took second place in the Best of Southern Nevada Solo & Ensemble Tournament and appear on the 2014 LVA “Encore Performance” CD.

138 Outstanding Accomplishments the Twelfth Year 2013-2014

 In September, LVA is the only high school guitar program in the U.S. to be invited to attend the bi-annual La Guitarra guitar festival in San Luis Obispo, CA in September. This was our 4th time to attend.  In October, Mr. Swick attended the National Network for Art Schools conference in New York City to receive the Outstanding Arts School of the Year Award for LVA.  In October, Mr. Swick spoke at the Music Association for Educators National Conference in Nashville, TN.  In November, hosted and conducted the 13th Annual Middle School Directors’ Choice Honor Guitar Ensemble  In December, hosted the first CCSD Choir and Guitar Holiday Gala at the Smith Center  In December, hosted the second CCSD High School Honor Guitar Ensemble directed by John Truitt  In January, Senior Guitar Quartet was invited (for the 4th year) to perform at the California Teachers Association convention at the Rio Hotel.  In February, hosted the second Best in Southern Nevada Guitar Solo & Ensemble Tournament with 2 elimination rounds. 8 out of the top 10 soloists are LVA guitar majors and they all appear on this year’s 2014 CD. Congratulations to: Noah Hanlon, Eddie Carcamo, Chazz Miceli, Rese Comas, Tony Aguilar, Sullivan Winesette, Cameron Fults and Samuel Kaminski.  In March, Mr. Swick was a speaker on guitar education at the American String Teachers Association in Louisville, KT  In March, Senior Guitar Quartet and Senior Guitar Duo participated in the University of Texas-Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Festival, the most competitive guitar ensemble competition in the U.S. The LVA Senior Guitar Quartet took first place. The duo took fourth place.  In March, LVA performed at the 10th Annual Loyola Marymount Guitar Ensemble Festival in Los Angeles, CA.  In April, hosted the CCSD Middle School and High School Guitar Ensemble Festival. Both Varisty 2 & 3 ensembles made Superior Ratings.  In April, was notified that the LVA Music Department will receive its eleventh Gold GRAMMY in the School Awards. The ceremony was held at LVA on May 28.  In April, notified by DownBeat Magazine that LVA Senior Guitar Quartet received their 2nd “Best Of” DownBeat Magazine Award. Last year, was the “Best of Classical Ensemble.” This year, “Best of Latin Ensemble.”  In April, Mr. Swick was notified he was one of five finalists out of more than 18,000+ CCSD school teachers to be recognized as Educator of the Year.  In May, Mr. Swick was selected as Educator of the Year.
