FAMILY FEATURES or many, traveling offers an opportunity to disconnect from the everyday and experience new places and cultures. With the beginning of a new decade, it is the perfect time to start deciding your Fnext travel adventures. When booking your future destinations, consider these spots and tips recommended by travel expert and Bank of America ambassador, Lee Abbamonte, the youngest American to visit every country plus the North and South Poles.

England, Germany, Scotland, Azerbaijan and more While technically more than one place, these locations have one thing in common: Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2020. The international soccer event marks the first time the games will be held across the continent in 12 host cities. “The year is a big one for sports,” Abbamonte said. “From sporting events in Europe to Japan, it is a fun year for travel and to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime experiences.” Australia From its deserts to tropical beaches, Australia is a beautiful country to explore. While many people might be familiar with the Sydney Opera House and the unique wildlife, there are many hidden gems in Australia. “I’ve been to Australia 10 times and I still can’t get enough,” Abbamonte said. “One of my favorite cities is Melbourne. While it’s one of the largest cities in Australia, the heart of the city is hidden and secretive. It comes to life when you visit the alleys, laneways and arcades. The vibrant city has so much to offer: cafes, a unique street culture and street art.” New Zealand If you are going to New Zealand for the first time, Abbamonte recommends boogie boarding down the sand dunes, hiking up a volcano and visiting the Moeraki Boulders. However, if you are really interested in getting the blood pumping, take a leap from Nevis Bungy near Queenstown. It is among the highest bungy jumping experiences in the world, measuring 440 feet. Mexico “Mexico City has two of my favorite things – great food and sports,” Abbamonte said. “The street tacos are to die for, and I love going to soccer games at Estadio Azteca.” In 2020, there will be many festivals to explore. The city is a cultural hub with music, theater, dance and food events throughout the year. While experiencing the festivities, it is also an opportune time to take a step back and enjoy Chapultepec Park. Brazil One of Abbamonte’s favorite waterfalls is Iguazu Falls located on the border of Brazil and Argentina. While Iguazu Falls might be well known, the falls themselves are truly unique. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls that stretch over approximately 1.68 miles. The Devil’s Throat is the tallest fall with a drop of more than 262 feet. Melbourne Victoria, Australia

While traveling internationally can be fun and example, you can try bone marrow ice cream, exhilarating, there are also places throughout the stop by Mill Ends Park (the world’s smallest United States that offer memorable activities: park) or attach your wish to The Wishing Tree. The B6 January 9-15, 2020 Southside Messenger Officials Keep Things Running Smoothly Behind the Scenes at South Boston SOUTH BOSTON - It looks simple on race night: line the cars up, wave the green flag and let ‘em race. Nothing could be further from the truth. From seven hours before the green flag until at least two hours after the checkered flag, there is a core group of indispensable, under-appreciated individuals who make the evening go as smoothly and equally as possible. From inspectors to scorers to flagmen and more, this group toils away more for the love of the sport than money. “I think the average fan, even the average competitor, doesn’t have a clue how important xxxx is, how hard they work and how much flack they take at times,” said Cathy Rice, general manager at South Boston Speedway. “There is absolutely no way we could ever put on a race with- out them. They keep things moving in the pits and on the track. “They work so hard to make sure we have a level play- ing field and everyone is treated fairly in every division. It’s hot. There’s a lot of pressure. The hours are long. But every week, they show up and quietly go about their busi- ness. I’m always amazed at how hard the group we have works and how well they work together.” That core crew of indispensable officials at South Bos- ton Speedway is headed up by Jeff Bomar, the track’s head technical inspector. He works in the infield every event alongside Bruce Barksdale, Bear Clark, Speedy Austin, Mi- chael Crews, Jimmy Davis, Matthew Halloren and Ken Utt. Tracey Sage and Connie Glass handle scoring while Hunter Rose is the flagman. Generally, the group begins work around noon on race day and finish up around midnight … if they are lucky. They begin the day in a group meeting with Rice and Bomar. “We like to make sure everyone is on the same page and to go over anything new we may have going on for the week,” said Bomar. Then they scatter to their respective areas. Clark and Crews oversee tires, making sure the bar- codes of all tires have been scanned and recorded to the appropriate car in a data base. They also help roll the tires out of the tire shed. Barksdale and Austin work with the Late Model teams, Utt and Davis with the Limited teams and Halloren works with the Pure Stocks and the Hornets. The officials are there to make sure things go smoothly, rules are followed, that the schedule runs on time and to answer any ques- tions teams may have. “We like for the same guys to stay with the same divi- sion from week to week. We like for the teams to become familiar with them, so they know who to go to if they have a question,” said Bomar. When their respective division is on track, inspectors keep a close eye on the action on the track and cars coming into the pits. At other times, when other divisions are on track, they are busy wherever they may be needed. Everyone is cross trained also. For instance, when Clark is finished working with tires, he serves as the stop-and- go official at the end of pit road during the races. Simi- larly, Crews moves to the spotters stand to help answer questions and maintain order there. 1. Who composed and performed “Your Song” in 1970? 2. Which group wrote and released “Heartache Tonight”? 3. Who released “Pick Up the Pieces”? 4. What is “409” in the 1962 Beach Boys song? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Waiting for the break of day, Searching for something to say, Flashing lights against the sky, Giving up I close my eyes.” Answers 1. Elton John. It was released as a b-side single to “Take Me to the Pilot,” but DJs liked “Your Song” bet- ter and made that the a-side. It was his first big hit in the U.K. 2. The Eagles, in 1979. The song received a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. 3. The Average White Band, in 1974. It didn’t chart in the U.K. until American DJs started to play it and it soared to the top of the U.S. charts. 4. A 409 cubic-inch Chevrolet engine. 5. “25 or 6 to 4,” by Chicago in 1970. It’s about being up in the middle of the night trying to write a song. Said this way, “Twenty-five or (twenty-) six to four,” the meaning becomes clearer. It’s about the time the song jelled and came together. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc. King Features Weekly Service January 6, 2020
