Clear-cutting, the main method of harvesting in many forests in the world, causes a series of dramatic environmental changes to the forest habitat and removes habitat resources for arboreal and epigeal species. It results in considerable changes in the composition of both plant and animal communities. Ants have many critical roles in the maintenance and functioning of forest ecosystems. Therefore, the response of ants to clear-cutting and the time it takes for an ant community to recover after clear- cutting are important indicators of the effect of this harvesting technique on the forest ecosystem. We investigated ground-dwelling ant communities during secondary succession of deciduous forests in Transylvania, Romania. -

V ANREUSEL, H. VAN DYCK & D. MAES Introduction According to the Flemish Red List, M. alcon is threa tened. It is one of the few legally protected butterflies. We have recently finalised a Spe cies Action Plan for Maculinea a/con funded by the Flemish Ministry of Nature Conservation (VAN REUSEL et al. 2000). It was the first action plan for an invertebrate, but Flanders has only little experience with the imple mentation of such plans and with the integration of spe before 1991 cies-specific knowledge into site-oriented conservation. Hence, the M. a/con plan will be an important test-case. -

Attention is paid to the existence of collective robust periodic oscillations in the activity of ants inside the nest. It is known that those oscillations are the outcome of the process of short-distance interactions among ants and that the activity of individual workers is not periodic. Isolated workers can activate spontaneously in a unpredictable fashion. A model of an artificial society of computer automata endowed with the basic behavioural traits of Leptothorax ants is presented and it is demonstrated that collective periodic oscillations in the activity domain can exist as a consequence of interactions among the automata. -

Altogether, 19 ant species were found; the most abundant ones (in respect of number of nests) in the entire habitat under study were Temnothorax crassispinus (Karav.) and Myrmica rubra (L.). All analysed parameters of individual subcommunities, except for nest density (highest on the forest edge, lowest in the cleared belt), showed a gradient pattern of variability, with species richness and the index of general diversity increasing and the dominance index decreasing within the transect from the forest interior to the cleared belt. Worldwide Spread of the Ruby Ant, Myrmica Rubra (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
Myrmecological News 14 87-96 Vienna, January 2011 Worldwide spread of the ruby ant, Myrmica rubra (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) James K. WETTERER & Alexander G. RADCHENKO Abstract The ruby ant, Myrmica rubra (LINNAEUS, 1758) (formerly Myrmica laevinodis NYLANDER, 1846), an aggressive Eur- asian species with a powerful sting, is now spreading through temperate North America. To document the worldwide distribution of M. rubra and evaluate its potential for further spread, we compiled published and unpublished specimen records from > 2000 sites. We report the earliest known M. rubra records for 71 geographic areas (countries, major is- lands, US states, Canadian provinces, and Russian federal districts), including three areas with no previously published records: Prince Edward Island, Washington State, and the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia. All earlier published records of M. rubra from East Asia, including the Far East of Russia, Japan, and China, appear to be misidentifications of Myrmica kotokui FOREL, 1911. Myrmica rubra is native to an enormous expanse extending from Ireland and Portugal in westernmost Europe across 8000 km to central Asia and eastern Siberia, and from 39 to 70° N in latitude. Exotic populations of M. rubra were first recorded in eastern North America more than 100 years ago. Myrmica rubra is now documented from five southeastern Canadian provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec), six northeastern US states (Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont), and one northwestern state (Wash- ington) ranging from 41.5 to 47.6° N. Given the vast range of M. rubra in Eurasia, perhaps the most striking aspect about this species in North America is how little it has spread over the past century. -

The immature stages of hoverflies of the subfamily Microdontinae (Diptera: Syrphidae) develop in ant nests, as predators ofthe ant brood. The present paper reviews published and unpublished records of associations of Microdontinae with ants, in order to discuss the following questions. (1) Are all Microdontinae associated with ants? (2) Are Microdontinae associated with all ants? (3) Are particular clades of Microdontinae associated with particular clades of ants? (4) Are Microdontinae associated with other insects? A total number of 109 associations between the groups are evaluated, relating to 43 species of Microdontinae belonging to 14 genera, and to at least 69 species of ants belonging to 24 genera and five subfamilies. The taxa of Microdontinae found in association with ants occur scattered throughout their phylogenetic tree. One of the supposedly most basal taxa (Mixogaster)isassociatedwith ants, suggesting that associations with ants evolved early in the history of the subfamily and have remained a predominant feature of their lifestyle. -

Variation in queen number alters the genetic structure of social insect colonies, which in turn affects patterns of kin-selected con¯ict and cooperation. Theory suggests that shifts from single- to multiple-queen colonies are often associated with other changes in the breeding system, such as higher queen turnover, more local mating, and restricted dispersal. These changes may restrict gene ¯ow between the two types of colonies and it has been suggested that this might ultimately lead to sympatric speciation. We performed a detailed microsatellite analysis of a large population of the ant Formica selysi, which revealed extensive variation in social structure, with 71 colonies headed by a single queen and 41 by multiple queens. This polymorphism in social structure appeared stable over time, since little change in the number of queens per colony was detected over a ®ve-year period. Apart from queen number, single- and multiple-queen colonies had very similar breeding systems. Queen turnover was absent or very low in both types of colonies. Single- and multiple-queen colonies exhibited very small but signi®cant levels of inbreeding, which indicates a slight deviation from random mating at a local scale and suggests that a small proportion of queens mate with related males. -

ABSTRACT The evolutionary origin of workerless parasitic ants parasitizing colonies of Leptothorax (s.str.) is investigated using data on mor- phology, chromosome number, and allozyme phenotype of both social parasites and their hosts. Of the three previously proposed pathways, the evolution of workerless parasites from guest ants or slave-makers is unlikely, at least according to a phenogram obtained by UPGMA clustering of Nei's similarities based on seven enzymes. Intraspecific evolution of the workerless parasites Doronomyrmex goesswaldi, D. kutteri, and D. pacis from their common host, Leptothorax acervorum cannot be excluded with the present data. The workerless parasite L. paraxenus, however, clearly differs from its host, L. cf. canadensis, in morphology and biochemistry, and most probably did not evolve from the latter species. It is proposed to synonymize Doronomyrmex under Lep- tothorax (s.str.). INTRODUCTION Eusocial insects by definition are characterized by a division of labor between non-reproductive workers and reproductive queens. Nevertheless, in a small minority of ant, bee, and wasp species, the worker caste has been secondarily lost. Instead of founding their own colonies solitarily, the queens of these workerless social para- sites invade the nests of other, often closely related host species and exploit the present worker force to rear their own young.
