I further agree that permission for extensive copying of this thesis for scholarly purposes may be granted by the Head of my Department or by h.i>s representatives. It is understood that copying or publication of this thesis for financial gain shall not be allowed without my written permission. Department of ENGLISH The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date October, 1967 ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis has been to define Max Beerbohm's critical literary principles, to evaluate his con• tribution to aesthetic criticism and thereby to determine his place in the critical tradition. The methods of investi• gation have been: to study the formative influences on the development of his critical principles and to evaluate the results of their application in Max's essays and dramatic criticisms. From this study it is evident that as a man and as an artist Max was "formed" during the Eighteen-nineties. By nature he was an intellectual dandy who always preferred strong, narrow creative personalities like himself. He was detached, fastidious, witty, and humane, and he was noted for his wisdom and sound common sense, even as a very young man.

  • Enoch Soames Max Beerbohm
A defense of cosmetics (1896), The happy hypocrite (1897), More (1899), Zuleika Dobson (1911), Seven men (1919), And even now (1920). Y no estaba.

  • ENOCH SOAMES Max Beerbohm, Precedido De UN CUENTO PERFECTO, De Roberto Bolaño

I enjoyed this older bookBy Christa M. HeglandI enjoyed this older book, especially because I read it as we were touring Oxford and England. The story is set within Oxford University during the early years of the 20th century. Our narrator, never named, has been given the gift of seeing into the thoughts and emotions of all of the characters in the tale, which is presented as a 'truthful recounting' of that 'infamous event', wherein Miss Zuleika (pronounced "Zu-leek-ah" by the author) Dobson came to visit Oxford. There is much here that pokes fun at academes, ivory towers, and College life, but also there is a gentle prodding for us to examine how we view ourselves and how we interact with those around us, as well as a nod to the excesses of youth, and the youthful idea that no-one has ever felt this way before, and that no-one can possibly understand what it is like to be me. Be patient with this book; the set-up and explanations come slowly.
