Prayer & Sending Forth Thank you for your prayers and participation. 2020 Northeast District Conference Sunday, May 3, 2020 ZOOM Meeting hosted by Cedar Falls, First UMC At 2:00 PM on Sunday afternoon – Rev. Matt German greeted everyone with a very short orientation to the Zoom Conference. Melissa Boeschen opened with “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” Paul Wilcox, Northeast District Superintendent welcomed everyone to the Northeast District Conference. Rev. Cal Nicklay opened up with scripture and prayer. Current District Superintendent, Paul Wilcox introduced incoming District Superintendent, Rev. Moody Colorado. Moody followed by telling a little bit about himself. DS Paul Wilcox introduced the Bishop’s Address to the District. Ollie Pleggenkuhle, Chair Executive Committee, welcomed and opened the meeting. Election of Secretary, District Administrative Assistant, Alanna Warren was nominated – Ollie Pleggenkuhle motioned - ALL APPROVED The April 28, 2019 NE District Conference minutes – Ollie Pleggenkuhle motioned - ALL APPROVED Clergy Milestones – Rev. David Glenn-Burns recognized and brought attention to his co-chair Alan Lehrstrom along with the work of the Northeast District Committee on Ordained Ministry. David recognized those who were completing studies, who would be commissioned, retiring and those who are moving to or from the Northeast District. Matthew 25 recipients – Kathi Mitchell recognized the recipients of the 2020 Matthew 25 grant monies. District Asking 2020– Kathi Mitchell gave the Report from the NE District Grants Committee for 2020. The Committee approved $32,200 for Local Church grants and $13,500 for District Ministry Support Grants for a total of $45,700. District Asking 2021 - Motion for District Asking, 2021 – The Northeast Executive Committee moves that the NED Asking for 2021 be; . $3.00/member to be split four ways: o $1.00 to ThreeHouse Campus Ministry o $1.00 to Local Church Grants o .50 cents to NED JFON Clinic in Decorah (Immigrant Legal Services, Education, and Advocacy) o .50 cents to North Central District Vida Nueva (Latino Ministry in Corwith, IA (VBS Ministry Partnership in Postville) ALL APPROVED Celebration of Apportionments & District Askings – District Superintendent, Rev. Paul Wilcox recognized churches that paid District Askings and Apportionments in full. The Northeast District paid 73.42% of their apportionments in 2019. Mission Highlights – Barb Bazyn recognized churches that were doing great work through mission. Lay Ministry report –Karen Sage reported the NE District currently has 77 Lay Servants. A special recognition was given to Delores Mooty who has spent a number of hours going over the Lay Ministry reports and compiling information for the team. Leaders are going to be needed for trainings in the upcoming future. Congregational Development Report – Matt German reported briefly on the work that the Executive Committee is doing. The big event the Committee had planned God Size Dream Workshop was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are hoping that they will still be able to have this event in the upcoming. Nominations report – DeLyte Ebbers, Chair of the Northeast District Nominations Committee thanked everyone that helped with the committee work. o Motion made by DeLyte Ebbers to approve Nominations: ALL APPROVED o Motion made by DeLyte Ebbers to allow Executive Committee to fill vacancies between now and District Conference 2021 – ALL APPROVED Northeast District Conference adjourned 3:49 PM. All Approved Concluding music: “It is Well With My Soul” Michelle Boeschen Respectfully Submitted – Alanna Warren – May 3, 2020 Minutes of East Central District Meeting May 9, 2020 by Zoom Hosted by First Methodist Church, Marion Before the meeting officially began, we heard a message from Bishop Laurie Haller. She spoke of the vision that our Iowa United Methodist Churches hold onto even in difficult times. She reminded us to imagine a vision clearly, to share the vision outside of our buildings and to trust the vision to lead us to live by faith. Rev. Kiboko called the meeting to order. Barb Wilcox volunteered to take notes for minutes to the meeting. 82 members participated by Zoom. A motion was made by Kiboko that we accept the minutes from the 2019 District meeting. The motion passed. A District Askings of $3 per member of each church was presented. The motion included the 5 ministries that would receive these funds, and the percentage each would receive. 25% Discipleship growth 30% New and emerging congregations 20% Church revitalization 10% Campus ministries 15% JFON The motion passed. Nominations – Conference Committees Barb Oakland reported on nominations. Perry Beckler of Tiffin was added to the CFA as East Central member. Immaculee Mukahigiro was added to the JFON as East Central district representative. Scott Meador brought up Diane Townsley to be added to dCOM and Marie Kendall to be removed, as she is retiring. John Louk reminded us that he is no longer on Episcopacy, as his term has ended. Barb Oakland informed us due to covid-19, everyone who thought they were finished with committee assignments must wait until 2021, after General Conference when the Iowa Annual Conference happens, for their terms to end. John Louk agreed to remain in his position an additional year. East Central district needs a representative on COSROW. Lynn Calvert agreed to serve.     THE STANDING RULES (adopted at the 2016 Annual Conference) [All paragraph references are to the 2012 Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church except as otherwise noted, and these numbers are printed in bold.] INTRODUCTION The Alabama-West Florida Conference of The United Methodist Church shall be organized and structured according to the mandates of the latest edition of The Book of Discipline, and shall act in all respects in harmony with the policy of The United Methodist Church. In keeping with those standards, this conference commits itself to the elimination of discrimination on the basis of race and gender (see ¶604.1). The following Standing Rules are adopted by the Alabama-West Florida Conference for its own governance and to fit its specific setting for mission and ministry. The Alabama-West Florida Conference shall follow Roberts Rules of Order except where superseded by explicit rules in The Book of Discipline or in these Standing Rules. 1. These Standing Rules shall be implemented, applied or amended as follows: A. These rules shall be effective at the end of the annual conference at which they are passed. All rules remain in effect until they are rescinded or amended by a two-thirds vote of those present and voting on the next day after the proposed amendment has been presented in writing. B. Any proposed changes in the Standing Rules should be received in writing by the chairperson of the Committee on Standing Rules no later than February 1. C. Any of these rules, except Standing Rule (SR) 1D, may be suspended by a two-thirds vote of those present and voting at annual conference.

Your faithful giving allowed impactful ministry to take place along and enabled our conference to appropriately respond to Hurricane Michael. As we launch into a new year, I continue to be amazed at the ministry taking place through our local churches and extension ministries across the Alabama-West Florida Conference. You are transforming our communities, the region, and the world. A scripture that continues to bless me is found in Philippians 1:18 and 19 and says, “the message about Christ is being preached…so I rejoice. For I know that as you pray for me and the Spirit of Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to deliverance.” The Apostle Paul wrote these words while in a Roman prison. He was sent there because he shared about Christ. I am deeply grateful for your gift of prayer this past year for me and for our shared ministry together. Prayer is especially vital this year with a called General Conference. Another giving opportunity placed before you is our 2019 Missional Budget. The strength of our United Methodist Church is shown when we come together to be in shared ministry. Your faithful giving allows so much to take place, especially here in the bounds of the Alabama-West Florida Conference. Hereditary traits, in religious movements as in men, are difficult to trace with precision. In movements, inheritance from parent to child is obscured further by the fact that always there is a dominant parent, and one or more other, less dominant. Estrangement between mother and child, as in the case of the Holiness and Pentecostal movements, and the interweaving of regressive and positive traits have caused historians of both movements largely to ignore a dark aspect of this inheritance the Anti-ordinance phenomenon.

The Tennessee Conference, in the Southeastern Jurisdiction, is led by Bishop Bill McAlilly, who was elected as a bishop at the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in 2012. Bishops often serve for two consecutive four-year terms. Our conference has 535 churches or charges and approximately 106,299 members. Bishop McAlilly presides over the Annual Conference Session but does not vote. We offer this short guide to help familiarize new members – and remind others – of the nuts and bolts of our holy conferencing. THE MISSION OF THE TENNESSEE CONFERENCE …is to discover, equip, connect, and send lay and clergy leaders who shape congregations that offer Jesus Christ to a hurting world one neighborhood at a time. Conference staff includes the bishop; five district superintendents and their respective district administrators; several program and support staff; and financial/operations and communications staff.     SOUTHERN HILLS DISTRICT NEWS February 2020 Stumbling toward Holy Living “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” (Colossians 3:12-13, NIV) In his book, The Road to Character, David Brooks encourages readers like me to build deeper character, what the Bible calls “holy” living, and what John Wesley emphasized in teaching about sanctification. Rev. Clayton Coffey loaned this book to me after I told him I liked hearing David Brooks speak at a Continuing Education event. I recently heard a sermon from Roger Morrow about Holy Living which went along with this character-building focus which the Holy Spirit has led me to consider lately. Consider Brooks’ words from The Road to Character (New York: Random House, 2015, pp. 268-269) “We are all stumblers, and the beauty and meaning of life are in the stumbling---in recognizing the stumbling and trying to become more graceful as the years go by… the stumbler faces her imperfect nature, her mistakes and weaknesses, with unvarnished honesty … She is sometimes ashamed of the perversities in her nature ---the selfishness, the self-deceit, the occasional desire to put lower loves above higher ones. But humility offers self- understanding… The stumbler is made whole by this struggle. Each weakness becomes a campaign that organizes and gives meaning to life and makes you a better person. We lean on each other as we struggle against sin.
