A Truth and Reconciliation Commission Perspective
Leadership for reconciliation: A Truth and Reconciliation Commission perspective P G J Meiring (University of Pretoria) ABSTRACT Leadership for reconciliation: A Truth and Reconciliation Commission perspective As important as the need for authentic leadership in the fields of politics, economy and education in Africa may be, the continent is also in dire need of leadership for reconciliation. Against the backdrop of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the author – who served on the Commission – discusses five characteristics of leaders for reconciliation. Leaders need to be: leaders with a clear understanding of the issues at stake; leaders with respect for the truth; leaders with a sense of justice; leaders with a comprehension of the dynamics of forgiveness; and leaders with a firm commitment. The insights and experiences of both the chairperson of the TRC, Desmond Tutu, and the deputy chair, Alex Boraine, form the backbone of the article. 1 AFRICA, OH AFRICA, WHERE ARE YOUR LEADERS?” I will always remember that day. I was being driven through Nairobi in the company of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It was in November 1994, and the PACLA II (Pan African Christian Leadership Assembly II) meeting was due to commence. Tutu, who was asked to be the keynote speaker, invited me, on our arrival at the airport, to accompany him for the rest of the day, meeting with church leaders and other luminaries in the Kenyan capital. It was when our driver, an official of one of the ecumenical bodies in Nairobi, was reporting on the difficulties they were facing, that the Archbishop leaned back in his seat, and with closed eyes murmured: “Africa, Oh, Africa, where are your leaders?” Tutu was not the first to raise the question. -

Thesis, the Songs of 10 Rappers Were Analyzed
ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. African Refugees, Housing, and Identity in Metro Vancouver
HANGING ON THE EDGE OF THE HOUSE: AFRICAN REFUGEES, HOUSING, AND IDENTITY IN METRO VANCOUVER by Jenny Francis B.A. (History), University of British Columbia, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Geography) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) December 2009 © Jenny Francis, 2009 ABSTRACT For African refugees arriving in Metro Vancouver, housing is a crucial component of settlement and integration. Given Metro Vancouver’s expensive housing market, high levels of homelessness, and consistently low vacancy rate, how are they coping in Vancouver’s housing market? What barriers do they face and what are some possible solutions? By providing an overview of the housing challenges African refugees face and identifying gaps in available services, this study expands the knowledge base upon which improved settlement policy and service provision may be built. The results show that, due to a complex combination of factors, including lack of affordable housing, discrimination, low incomes, and long application processing times, African refugees are facing a housing availability and affordability crisis in Metro Vancouver that forces them to accept substandard housing which is unsuitable, inadequate, and unaffordable. These unstable conditions are both symptomatic and generative of other problems, including poverty, debt, hunger, and a high risk of homelessness. Importantly, the study also reveals how these material conditions, which are the effect of policies grounded in theoretical perspectives around multiculturalism and notions of Canadian identity, are reflective of those underlying ideological frameworks. The author also argues that an enhanced understanding of the historical roots of current discriminatory practices is required in order to effect positive social change for the future. -

They are known for their cultural work: poetry performances, plays, songs and their struggle to create a cultural movement amongst workers in Durban. They see themselves as part and parcel of a growing and confident democratic trade union movement in South Africa. In 1985 all three of them were cen- tral to the creation of the Durban Workers’ Cultural Local whose principles are outlined below. By the end of the year they were responsible for the development of a Trade Union and Cultural Centre at Clairwood along side the shop steward council in the area. The poems in this book have been composed for perfor- mance at mass-meetings, trade union and community gatherings, for festive and sombre occasions. -
