Forrestdale Lake Nature Reserve Management Plan 2005 Management Plan No. 53 Conservation Commission of Western Australia 1 FORRESTDALE LAKE NATURE RESERVE Management Plan 2005 PART A INTRODUCTION BRIEF OVERVIEW Forrestdale Lake Nature Reserve (Forrestdale Lake) is a Class A reserve of 245 ha, gazetted for the Conservation of Flora and Fauna. It is located approximately 25 km south-east of Perth, in the City of Armadale (Map 1). Situated on the Swan Coastal Plain in the Swan Coastal Plain bioregion, the reserve is one of the most important conservation areas in southwestern Australia (CALM 1987). It is internationally important as a habitat and refuge for water birds, and in 1990, together with Thomsons Lake, was designated to the List of Wetlands of International Importance under the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971). Together they comprise Ramsar site number 481. It is also included in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia (Environment Australia 2001), and, due to the significance of Forrestdale Lake for flora and fauna conservation and recreation, it was added to the Register of the National Estate1 in March 1978. Furthermore, Forrestdale Lake is a Conservation Category Wetland, which is the highest priority for wetland conservation, and has been given protection under the Environmental Protection (Swan Coastal Plain Lakes) Policy 1992, a revised draft of which (the revised draft Environmental Protection (Swan Coastal Plain Wetlands) Policy 2004) was being developed at the time of writing this management plan. Proteaceae (Banksia Species)
Proteaceae (Banksia Species) Information: 90% of all Banksia species occur in South Western Australia. The two most com- mon Banksia species in the Perth region are the Firewood Banksia (Banksia menziesii) and the Slender or Candle Banksia (Banksia attenuata). These two species each flower throughout the two halves of the year and are an important source of food for countless animals. Large Banksias such as these as well as B. grandis, B. ilicifolia B. Prionotes and B. littoralis produce an abun- dance of nectar from their large flower spikes that sustain countless species and have traditionally been used as a source of food and drink by indigenous Australians. Banksias are highly adapted to a nutrient poor environment with harsh, dry climate having sunken stomata to preserve water and cluster roots to enhance nutrient uptake in Phosphorus deficient soils. The Twig-mound ant builds its nest at the base of B. ilicifolia. Some moth species larvae burrow into Banksia cones and leaves. -

A new name, clarification of synonymy, and a new subspecies for Isopogon (Proteaceae) in Western Australia. Nuytsia 30: 309–316 (2019). Isopogon drummondii Benth. nom. illeg. is lectotypified and replaced by the new name I. autumnalis Rye & T.Macfarlane while I. drummondii Hügel ex Jacques is recognised as a probable synonym of I. sphaerocephalus Lindl. The new subspecies I. sphaerocephalus subsp. lesueurensis Rye is described. Introduction This paper undertakes to settle the uncertainty around the name of a Western Australian species of Isopogon R.Br. (Proteaceae), the solution to which involves a second species, in which a new subspecies is recognised. In his treatment of Isopogon for the Flora of Australia, Foreman (1995) described one species as I. sp. A because he was uncertain whether the name I. drummondii Hügel ex Jacques (Jacques 1843) applied to it. A later-published name with the same epithet, I. drummondii Benth. (Bentham 1870), does apply to Foreman’s species A but cannot be used because it is an illegitimate later homonym. The name I. drummondii Hügel ex Jacques was not mentioned by Bentham (1870), possibly because it was published in a horticultural context. -

First, all those small disappointments in life with Covid: the holidays that had to be postponed or cancelled, the birthday parties that could not go ahead, the social gatherings that we can no longer have. Then I called in to see the “Tuesday Mob” at the Illawong RFS - happy faces, busy hands, plenty of social distance available and all that sunshine after rain! I saw the tube/pot fillers, carpenters and fix-it men, Grevillea vestita, firestation garden P Forbes photographers, weed experts and harvesters of finger limes and warrigal greens, plus the delivery crew bringing more supplies of potting mix. -
