  • PURCELL: Ode for St Cecilia 1692 – BMC 40
PURCELL: Ode for St Cecilia 1692 – BMC 40 In 1683 a group of gentlemen amateurs and professional musicians started a "Musical Society" in London to celebrate the "Festival of St. Cecilia, a great Patroness of Music" on November 22nd. They asked Henry Purcell, then only 24, to be the first to write an Ode for their festivals; this Ode, Welcome to All the Pleasures, can be heard on our previous disc, BMC 39. Contrast this with the present Ode for St Cecilia , composed in 1692. Here we have a Purcell greatly matured and confident, already foreshadowing Handel. TRACK 1 Thou didst the scattered atoms bind Symphony (Overture) Which by the laws of true proportion joined, This splendid five-section Symphony opens with strings Made up of various parts, one perfect harmony. and trumpets answering each other. The second part is a Fugue on two subjects, followed by an Adagio in which TRACK 3 the oboes echo the violins. A brilliant Allegro for the Soprano & Chorus :Thou Tun'st This World trumpets follows, and after a harmonic Adagio, the Thou tun'st this world below, the spheres above, / Allegro is reprised. Who in the heavenly round to their own music move. TRACK 2 Trio: With That Sublime Celestial Lay Soli and Chorus: "Hail! Bright Cecilia" With that sublime celestial lay can any earthly sounds compare? Hail! bright Cecilia, fill ev'ry heart If any earthly music dare, the noble organ may. With love of thee and thy celestial art, From heav'n its wondrous notes were giv'n, That thine, and Music's sacred love Cecilia oft conversed with heav'n.

  • LEONHARDT (Musicians and Composers of the 20Th Century
Fitch, Frances Conover. Musicians and Composers of the 20th Century, s.v. "Gustav Leonhardt." Armenia, New York: Salem Press, 2009. Used by permission of EBSCO Information Services. A preeminent figure in the Early Music movement of the twentieth century, early keyboard player Gustav Leonhardt influenced countless students, record buyers, concertgoers, and musician colleagues through his energetic, quietly passionate performance and leadership style, his impeccable scholarship, and his brilliant and sophisticated mind. He championed the cause of the music he played and respected, rather than his own virtuosity, though that was remarkable. As a teacher and conductor he encouraged in his fellow musicians a sense of humility and curiosity about European music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He taught them how to breathe life into a repertoire that was, at the time, being performed in an abstract and largely intellectual manner. His particular insight into the concept of Baroque music as speech, and the role of rhetoric and articulation in creating that speech set his playing of the harpsichord apart from that of his contemporaries. The Life: Gustav Leonhardt was born into a musical Dutch-Austrian family, between the two world wars. His childhood home was in ‘s Graveland, a country town with stately homes near Hilversum in the province of North Holland, The Netherlands. His parents were accomplished amateur musicians with eclectic tastes in music, and the study of music was expected in their household. Gustav and his sister, Trudelies, were steered toward the piano and a harpsichord that their parents had bought for occasions when they played chamber music of Bach and Handel.

I highlight how an exploration of the ‘national voice’ constitutes both an idealisation of musical sound and national belonging. Through voice, I offer not only a new methodological approach to the question of musical nationalism, but also an understanding of its embodiment through concepts of gender and sexuality.

  • Evolution of the Countertenor
Week 9: Evolution of the Countertenor 1. The pre-cursor to the countertenor originated in the baroque era. Choir boys with beautiful voices were operated upon to halt the maturation of their voices and create a unique sound. What were these men called? A: Castrati Beginning in mid-16th century, the castrato voice was considered more desirable than those who used falsetto. They were also a requirement of the Catholic Church who places strict limits on where and when it was acceptable for women to sing (hint, almost nowhere and no time outside the private home!). While they began in the Catholic Church, castrati found stardom in opera, beginning with Monterverdi’s L’Orfeo and The Coronation of Poppea. Castrati were the superstars of their day and highly prized as lovers by their admirers. The true superstars were know by performing nicknames, one of the most famous was called Farinelli, but his real names was Carlo Maria Michelangelo Nicola Broschi. A 1994 movie dramatizes his life and supposed feud with the composer George Friedric Handel. Farinelli's singing voice was provided by the Polish soprano Ewa Malas-Godlewska and a countertenor, Derek Lee Ragin, who were recorded separately and then digitally merged to try to recreate the unique sound of a castrato.[ What is a Countertenor?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQjg50s2zPE Farinelli Il Castrato (1994) - Lascia Ch'io Pianga - Soundtrack https://youtu.be/AifjiYzoQW0 2. This countertenor was known as the “Last Castrato” and the only one to have been recorded. Who is he? A: Alessandro Moreschi Alessandro was born in Italy in 1858, and while he began his training in the Sistine Chapel choir, it is unknown the reason for his castration.

  • A Countertenor Aria Collection Continuum for Studio Training And
A COUNTERTENOR ARIA COLLECTION CONTINUUM FOR STUDIO TRAINING AND PERFORMANCE David T. Stanley Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 201 8 APPROVED: Jeffrey Snider, Major Professor Stephen Austin, Committee Member Stephen Morscheck, Committee Member Molly Fillmore, Chair of the Division of Vocal Studies Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John W. Richmond, Dean of the College of Music Victor Prybutok, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Stanley, David T. A Countertenor Aria Collection Continuum for Studio Training and Performance. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2018, 53 pp., 16 tables, 4 musical examples, bibliography, 64 titles. An assessment of the standard voice instructor or performer collection of printed music would likely reveal numerous operatic repertoire volumes in anthology format appropriated to the primary four voice categories. However, thorough investigation divulges little in comparable printed material accessible to the countertenor. This scarcity of systemized collections is especially evident in the territory of comprehensive countertenor operatic repertoire. This project fills that present void by creating a compilation of sixteen countertenor arias drawn from various styles and historical periods for suggested application in studio instruction and performance. Perhaps, a more meaningful project intent is the presentation of a beneficial graded literature continuum resource for the studio teacher who instructs a countertenor in various stages of vocal development. For this purpose, each of the 16 arias is categorized into four difficulty levels based on considerations of range, tessitura, coloratura demands, rhythm, sustained phrase length, tonality, melodic considerations/overall musical difficulty, accompaniment support, and ornamentation requirements.
