Phase 2 Talk Mill Theatre 2019
Between the Stones (Phase 2) Getting to noh from ‘page to stage’ Performance demonstration lecture: 8 February 2019, 7.30 - 9pm at dlr Mill Theatre (Dublin, Dundrum) www.milltheatre.ie +353 01 296 9340 Presentation by: What is noh? And how is a new noh in Kinue Oshima traditional style conceived and staged? Richard Emmert ‘Noh’ is classical Japanese theatre which combines dance, drama, music, Jannette Cheong poetic text, exquisite costumes and masks into a highly aesthetic form of art that has been performed continuously for 650 years. This performance demonstration talk is designed to introduce audiences to the key elements of noh and to have a close up and interactive experience of how a new noh is developed from ‘page to stage’. The focus of the new noh, Between the Stones, is ‘from tragic loss to peace’. It explores how the burden of grief turns into an understanding and celebration of life, death, beauty and love; and the transformative power of gardens to nurture and heal the soul… It also uniquely brings together three Japanese cultural forms - noh, karesansui gardens and furin (wind chimes). The professional noh actor, Kinue Oshima, the composer, Richard Emmert, and the author of this new two-act English language noh drama, Jannette Cheong, will share key aspects of how this new noh will be transformed from the poetic text to the stage production using traditional noh techniques. This is the third noh performing arts collaboration between Richard Emmert and Jannette Cheong and the second with the Oshima family following the acclaimed success of Pagoda (2009 European Tour, 2011 Asia Tour). -

Survivor Pulled from Rubble in Bangladesh
SUBSCRIPTION SATURDAY, MAY 11, 2013 RAJAB 1, 1434 AH No: 15805 Global network of hackers steals $45m15 from ATMs Survivor pulled from rubble in Bangladesh Max 40º 150 Fils Woman rescued after 17 days • Death toll tops 1,000 Min 24º SAVAR, Bangladesh: Bangladeshi rescuers pulled a woman alive from the ruins of a collapsed garment factory complex yesterday after she spent 17 days trapped in a basement under the rubble. Hours after officials had announced that the death toll had surged past the 1,000 mark, recovery teams who had long given up any hope of finding more survivors were stunned to hear the voice of a woman calling out for help. They then managed to pull her from the ruins in an operation broadcast live on television and watched over by growing crowds at the scene who were asked by clerics to pray for her. After she was brought to the surface she was whisked away to a waiting ambulance, but managed a weak smile to the people gathered at the ruined Rana Plaza complex on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka. Rescuers said she appeared to have lost a lot of weight but there were no other apparent signs of injury. Army Captain Ibrahimul Islam told AFP that the woman was called Reshma. “She has been taken to the Savar Combined Military Hospital and admitted in the intensive care unit. She is fine,” he said. Bangladesh’s fire service chief Ahmed Ali told AFP that Reshma was found in a gap between a beam and column near a Muslim prayer room in the basement of the nine-storey complex, which caved in on April 24, and appeared to have had access to water. -
