You will move to Masai Mara through the great African rift valley. Later on travel to Lake Nakuru en route Naivasha for a boat ride to Crescent Island. Itinerary Day 00 JKIA-Nairobi hotel Upon arrival at the JKIA, you will receive greetings from across Africa Tours and Afterwards, you will be transferred to Sankara Hotel booked of your choice on bed and breakfast. Day 01 Nairobi-Masai Mara Meet at the hotel. At your details upon, have greetings from across Africa tours and travel. Later, depart to Masai Mara through the great African rift valley. Arrive on time at Narok town and check in at the lodge for lunch meals. At noon have a game drive through the park in search of the lion, cheetah,Elephant, Buffalo and other members of the big five plus animals. Meanwhile dinner and overnight will be at Keekorok Lodge. Day 02 Maasai Mara - full day After an early breakfast of around 7:30 in the morning ,depart the camp for a full game viewing in the great park in search of its popular residents like the well-known predators and their opponents like the zebra, millions wildebeest,giraffe,hippo and dangerous crocodiles with a visit to the Mara river. Along with you carry packed lunch which will be served at Mara River. There will be an optional activity taking place beyond the 1730hrs where you opt to visit the Masai village or back to the camp. Dinner and overnight will be spent at the Keekorok Lodge. Day 03 Masai Mara – Lake Nakuru Wake up for an early game drive at Masai Mara at around 6:30 am, back for full breakfast then leave the Maasai Mara camp for Lake Nakuru. Arrive at Lake Nakuru on time to check in the camping and have a chance to enjoy the lunch meals. Later in the afternoon go a game drive to see the largest ornithological spots, flamingo and a variety of wildlife not forgetting the white rhino and black rhino found in the park.At late hours in the evening go to naivasha for a boat ride to Crescent Island well known for its birdlife.Back to the lake Nakuru for dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge Day 04 Lake Nakuru –Nairobi After the main breakfast go a game drive and back to the lodge for lunch meals. Later on leave the lodge to Nairobi via the Great Rift Valley. You will be arriving in Nairobi at around 1630 hrs. Where you opt to drop to the hotel or airport depending on your flight details. Introduction The name Masai Mara is derived from two words: Maasai after the Maasai tribe and Mara after the Mara River that runs across the reserve. The permanent Mara and Talek Rivers, and their tributaries, flow through the Reserve and approximately trisect it. Rainfall: In the drier east - c. 800 mm rainfall per year and to the wetter west - c. 1,200 mm per year. The reserve is primarily open grassland. It was voted in 2007 as the “eighth wonder of the world”. It is in the UNESCO tentative list as a World Heritage Site since 2010. 2. Location of the Mara 3. History of the Mara Year Development 1961 The Mara was first established as a wildlife sanctuary. It covered 520sq.km of the current area. Extended East to cover 1,821 sq.km. Converted to a game reserve. Management took over by Narok County Council. 1974 Part of the reserve was given National Reserve Status. An area of 159 sq.km was returned to the local communites. 1976 An additional 162 km.sq were removed from the reserve. 1984 The park was reduced to 1,510 sq.km 1995 Management of the park was divided between Transmara County Council and Narok County Council.

This is not to say that we have not had our challenges! The weather for one has been interesting. We have had a lot more rain compared to the previous year which has made our work challenging both for the field team and for the community team. We have all had our bouts of deep river crossing and getting stuck but luckily there have been many kind people who have helped us get out of some of these sticky situations. Despite all this we have still managed to achieve a great deal! One of the Mara Cheetah Project’s main objectives is to determine how many cheetahs there are in the Maasai Mara and to monitor these numbers over time. To achieve this we have teamed up with Dr. Arjun Gopalaswamy and we are using a spatially explicit capture recapture method to accurately estimate cheetah densities in the Mara. We are still finalising the analysis but the numbers will be out soon! This year also saw the launch of the Biomedical project, a partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Smithsonian Institution. We have managed to collect some important genetics and disease samples that we are planning on analysing in the coming year. The Mara Cheetah project has also been given permission to deploy collars on cheetahs which is an exciting achievement. The collars should give us some useful data that will give us a unique insight into cheetah movement and space use.
