Joby Topper. Francis Douce and His Collection: An Antiquarian in Great Britain, 1757- 1834. A Master’s paper for the M.S. in L.S. degree. April, 2002. 76 pages. Advisor: David W. Carr. This paper is a study of the English antiquarian Francis Douce and his collection of books, prints, drawings, coins, and artifacts. The major theme of the collection—the manners, beliefs, and customs of the world—is connected to three of Douce’s most remarkable collecting interests: children’s books and games; fools and jesters; and the sublime, including his collections of death, demonology, and witchcraft. The collection, divided between the Bodleian Library and the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, remains an invaluable resource for scholars in a wide variety of fields. It is hoped that this paper will emphasize the vision according to which Douce developed a distinctive collection; that it will shed additional light on British collecting and collectors of Douce’s lifetime, 1757- 1834; and that it will serve as a lesson in collecting that might be used by librarians and non-librarians alike. Sir Frederic Madden and the Battle of the Brass Rubbings C. J.Wright On 1 April 1839 Sir Frederic Madden, Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum, received distressing news.1 Mr McDonald, a surgeon at Bristol, wrote to inform him that the previous morning his brother, Lewis Pryse Madden, had, after a brief illness, expired of apoplexy at Clifton aged fifty-six.2 A week later, on Monday the 8th, Lewis was laid to rest in the crypt of Clifton Parish Church. Unlike his two other surviving brothers, Charles and Henry,Sir Frederic was unable to be present at the ceremony as his second wife, Emily,was expecting their first child, a son, Frederick William, who was born the next day. Such a melancholy occurrence would usually only affect the bereaved family but Lewis’s demise was to have unexpected ramifications. It must, after all, be rare for the domestic afflictions of one of the Museum’s Keepers to throw light on the development of its collections.To understand why it should be so in this particular case, it is necessary first to say something about Lewis Madden himself. The history of Sir Frederic’s eldest brother was typical of that of many of his generation. Lewis Pryse Madden had been born at Rochester on 15 October 1782, the second child but eldest son of Captain William John Madden. Like his father before him he joined the Royal Marines, though only rising to the rank of Lieutenant. His memorial tablet3 in Clifton parish church proudly records that he served for almost twenty years in the French Revolutionary Wars in many parts of the globe under, amongst others, Nelson and Sir Home Popham.4 After the defeat of Napoleon, the armed forces were cut back and Madden retired. -

One is extremely well known to Shakespeareans while the other has remained virtually unexamined. The familiar edition is, of course, the so-called “Perkins Folio” fraudulently annotated by John Payne Collier in the early 1850s, whose little-known counterpart is The Grimaldi Shakspere (1853), an anonymous work purporting to be an account of a Second Folio an- notated by the famous stage clown Joey Grimaldi (1778–1837). -

THE Director having opened the business of the Meeting, The Secretary read the Report of the Council agreed upon at their meeting of the 28th April last, whereupon it was Resolved, That the said Report be received and printed, and that the Thanks of the Society be given to the Council for their services. The Thanks of the Society were also voted to the Editors of the Society's publications; to the Right Honourable Thomas Grenville; to the Master and Fellows of St. Peter's College, Cambridge; to J. I. Black- burn, Esq. M.P.; to the Local Secretaries; and to Messrs. Nichols, for the assistance towards attaining the objects of the Society mentioned in the Report as having been given by them. Or rounds it in a mighty frescoed dome, Or lifts it heavenward in a lofty spire. Or shapes it in a cunning frame of words. Or pays his priest to make it, day by day. For sense must have its god as well as soul. The time is racked with birth pangs. Every hour Brings forth some gasping truth; and truth new born Looks a misshapen and untimely growth; The terror of the household and its shame, A monster coiling in its nurse‘s lap That some would strangle, some would only starve; But still it breathes, and passed from hand to hand. JAMES ORCHARD HALLIWELL-PHILLIPPS AND THE BRITISH MUSEUM LIBRARY MARVIN SPEVACK IN an address on the Halliwell-Phillipps collection delivered before the Pennsylvania Library Club, at the Friends' Library, Philadelphia, on Monday, 14 January 1895, Albert H. Smyth, Professor of the English Language and Literature, Central High School, Philadelphia, no librarian and therefore 'rather reminiscent than doctrinaire', raised the curtain thus: For several years I have been as regular in my summer visits to the British Museum as the birds that haunt the convenient corners of its Grecian front. From the day that I first walked vv'ith Richard Garnett, wittiest and most learned of librarians, in the gallery of the great reading-room and looked down upon the scholars who had come from the corners of the earth, I was made free ofthe learned society that makes ofthe library in Bloomsbury a great literary club. Lucy Toulmin Smith, the learned and industrious editor ofthe York Plays; Dr. Brinsley Nicholson, gentle and scholarly Shakespearian, now, alas, gone from us forever; P. A. Daniel, the best Elizabethan since Dyce, and many a foreign spirit, met every afternoon in the Museum restaurant, where we ate the worst meal in the United Kingdom and released our tongues after the forenoon's enforced silence.^ Since the reference must be to Richard Garnett, the younger, who became Reading Room Superintendent in 1875, and the scholars mentioned were generally active in the last quarter ofthe nineteenth century, it is perhaps not surprising for Smyth to say a little later on that 'no one ever saw Halliwell-Phillipps at the British Museum'. -
