The actions published in the LEAP are supplemental to our everyday work on monitoring, surveying and regulating to protect the environment. Some of the key achievements on our everyday work include: i) In September 1998 Michael Clapham MP officially opened the Bullhouse Minewater Treatment Plant. The scheme is a pioneering £1.2m partnership project funded by European Commission, Coal Authority, Environment Agency, Hepworths Building Products, Barnsley MBC and Yorkshire Water. Within one week a visible reduction could be seen in ochre levels in the River Don, after more than 100 years of pollution. ii) Monckton Coke and Chemical Company have successfully commissioned a combined heat and power plant, costing approximately £7 million.

Walk from Chesterfield along the Drone Valley Way – 04 February 2018 5 members travelled by the 0932 hours No. 43 bus into Chesterfield to start at the Crooked Spire to walk the Drone Valley Way in reverse! Linda & Mick Fairest, Eileen & Graham Gill and Malcolm Swift. The weather was very cold but dry as we began our walk down past Chesterfield Railway Station to take the path alongside the River Rother and towards the Chesterfield Canal and the Cuckoo Way. We noted House Sparrow, Dunnock, Great Tit, Blue Tit and Blackbird along the way. We continued alongside Chesterfield Canal from Tapton Lock to Bluebank Pool. In the hope of seeing more birds we decided to take the Bluebank cycle track instead of taking the path towards Old Whittington. Not many birds to be seen but as we reached the end of the path we did get 2 Treecreepers and a Nuthatch. Our flower list continued to grow with Snowdrops, White Dead Nettle, Lesser Celandine and Hairy Bittercress. We eventually arrived at the path to Old Whittington along Bilby Lane. Here we saw Greenfinch, Long-tailed Tit and Great Tit. Our walk took us through New Whittington and we climbed to the highest point on the walk up towards Grasscroft Wood. Two Buzzards soared in the distance and 2 Ravens flew overhead For our packed lunch stop we took advantage of a derelict building. The sun was shining and the sky was blue but the temperature was freezing so we didn’t linger long over our lunch! From this point there were good views and in the distance we identified the Chesterfield Crooked Spire (where our walk had begun) and also Bolsover Castle.

Introduction The white-clawed crayfish, a relative of the lobster, is the UK’s only native freshwater crayfish and was until recently widely distributed in alkaline waters1. In addition to the native species there are at least five non-native species of crayfish which have been introduced to the UK. The white-clawed crayfish tends to be nocturnal and spends much of its time hiding under stones, in tree roots and in rock crevices. It is omnivorous and feeds on a wide variety of vegetable and animal matter, including fallen leaves, aquatic plants. Occasionally it indulges in cannibalism, particularly on individuals with soft cuticles following their moult2. The crayfish forms an important part of the diet of other animals including otters, trout, and herons. In order to avoid predation they tend to emerge at night whilst hiding in refuges during the day. Mating takes place in autumn; the eggs develop whilst attached to the mother's abdomen, and the female overwinters with the eggs still attached to her. After the eggs hatch, the juveniles remain attached to the mother before becoming independent at the beginning of summer. During the first year of life, juveniles may moult more than 7 times. During the winter months they remain largely torpid in refuges becoming active as the water temperatures increase2.

The month started with early frosts followed by mainly sunny days up to the 9th. It was cold. There was light drizzle on 3rd and it was overcast in morning of 5th. It was breezy from 7th-13th. It was breezy with rain on 10th, sunny and showery on 11th, breezy and sunny on 12th and 13th. It was overcast mainly from 14th-17th and a rainy day on 18th. It was overcast, cold and windy on 19th-21st. From 22nd there was another spell of early morning frosts and sunny days until 27th and although the frost did not continue to the end of the month the sunshine did, but with light showers on 28th & 30th. There were 25 days with some sun and 5 with rain or showers. The Yorkshire River Don and its Tributaries Synopsis The document describes a virtual journey along the River Don beginning at its source; the perspective is as much historical as descriptive of the current scene. Where significant tributaries join the river, they also are tracked back to their start-points. Particular attention is paid to bridges and watermills because of their intimate associations with the rivers, but nearby buildings, both religious and secular are also given attention. Some people have been specially important to developments associated with the river, and brief biographical notes are provided for them. Finally, I would stress that this is very much a personal account dealing with a river system which I encountered often during my working life and afterwards.
