Under embargo until 13 October 2019, 10am GMT Press Release 13 October 2019 Five shortlisted artists announced for the 8th edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women 2019 – 2021 The Whitechapel Gallery, Collezione Maramotti and Max Mara are delighted to announce the five shortlisted artists for the 8th edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women: Allison Katz, Katie Schwab, Tai Shani, Emma Talbot and Hanna Tuulikki. This weekend the artists travelled to Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy, for the announcement, and to celebrate the opening of the major art work Che si può fare, by the seventh winner of the prize, Helen Cammock. Che si può fare tours from the Whitechapel Gallery where it was unveiled this summer. The artists shortlisted for the 2019 - 2021 iteration of the prize were selected by a judging panel chaired by Iwona Blazwick OBE, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery, joined by gallerist Florence Ingleby, artist Chantal Joffe, collector Fatima Maleki and art critic Hettie Judah. The Max Mara Art Prize for Women was established by Whitechapel Gallery in collaboration with the Max Mara Fashion Group in 2005. Its aim is to promote emerging female artists based in the UK, enabling them to develop their potential; and to inspire new artistic perspectives on 21st century Italy. The winning artist, announced in early 2020, is awarded a bespoke six-month artist residency in locations around Italy after presenting the judges with a proposal for a new body of work. The resulting work is premiered at the Whitechapel Gallery and travels to the Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy, in 2021. -

Email to request login credentials. Ali Banisadr / MATRIX 185 at the Wadsworth Marks Artist’s First Solo Museum Exhibition in the U.S. Hartford, Conn. (September 15, 2020)—Ali Banisadr draws freely from an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of painting to create a distinctive visual language, resulting in works that explore a “between space,” like those of hallucinations and dreams. Ali Banisadr / MATRIX 185 at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in the U.S. Ten paintings and two prints by Banisadr join a selection of works from the Wadsworth collection chosen by the artist, as well as a video collage that Banisadr created to show additional inspiration works from the museum’s collection. The exhibition opens October 22, 2020 and will be on view through February 14, 2021. “Banisadr’s depictions of abstracted masses feel especially relevant right now,” says Patricia Hickson, Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art at the Wadsworth. “His compositions echo the disquiet we are witnessing across the world today, including political rallies, protest marches, and street riots. And yet, as timely as they are, they are equally timeless.” Banisadr’s process has been related to synesthesia as sounds instruct the energy and rhythm in his painterly compositions. His perception of sound as inextricably linked to color and form began in his native Tehran, Iran during the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988)— the artist recalls drawing while sheltering at home. -

Autumn 2013 at the Whitechapel Gallery Sarah Lucas: SITUATION Absolute Beach Man Rubble Throughout the lower and upper floors of the Gallery are two decades of works by British artist, Sarah Lucas. The bawdy euphemisms, repressed truths, erotic delights and sculptural possibilities of the sexual body lie at the heart of Sarah Lucas’s work. First coming to prominence in the 1990s, this British artist’s sculpture, photography and installation have established her as one of the most important figures of her generation. This exhibition takes us from Lucas’s 1990s’ foray into the salacious perversities of British tabloid journalism to the London premiere of her sinuous, light reflecting bronzes: limbs, breasts and phalli intertwine to transform the abject into a dazzling celebration of polymorphous sexuality. -

Published December 2002 © Westminster City Council Department of Planning & Transportation, Development Planning Services, City Hall, 64 Victoria Street, London SW1E 6QP www.westminster.gov.uk PREFACE Since the designation of the first conservation areas in 1967 the City Council has undertaken a comprehensive programme of conservation area designation, extensions and policy development. There are now 53 conservation areas in Westminster, covering 76% of the City. These conservation areas are the subject of detailed policies in the Unitary Development Plan and in Supplementary Planning Guidance. In addition to the basic activity of designation and the formulation of general policy, the City Council is required to undertake conservation area appraisals and to devise local policies in order to protect the unique character of each area. Although this process was first undertaken with the various designation reports, more recent national guidance (as found in Planning Policy Guidance Note 15 and the English Heritage Conservation Area Practice and Conservation Area Appraisal documents) requires detailed appraisals of each conservation area in the form of formally approved and published documents. This enhanced process involves the review of original designation procedures and boundaries; analysis of historical development; identification of all listed buildings and those unlisted buildings making a positive contribution to an area; and the identification and description of key townscape features, including street patterns, trees, open spaces and building types. -

There has been much talk in the arts community about the Chinese government’s intention to build 1,000 new museums across the country by 2015. While the number may seem exaggerated, it is not. The State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the government bureau in charge of China’s museums nationwide, indeed has announced such a plan, adding that this unprecedented state investment in cultural infrastructure will, among other things, ensure that every mid-sized and large city in the country has at least one museum. How officials arrived at the fantastic-sounding figure of 1,000 starts to become clearer once one internalizes the fact that China currently has approximately100 urban areas with a population of 1 million or more. Beijing alone is planning to add at least 32 new museums by 2008. Already underway is a $220 million expansion of the National Museum of China that will double the exhibition spaces, and, in a move that reflects a new emphasis on visitor services and earned income generation, complement them with a museum shop, café and cinema. -
