The Bethune Annex, constructed in 1992, was named after Mary McLeod Bethune. She was an African American educator that was very active in black affairs. Bethune also served as a member of President Franklin Roosevelt's Black Cabinet, she helped to address issues concerning minority groups especially blacks. In October of 1904 she moved to Daytona, Florida where she opened a school of her own named the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls.
