ABSTRACT HUMANITIES JORDAN III, AUGUSTUS W. B.S. FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY, 1994 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1998 THE IDEOLOGICAL AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES OF HIP-HOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF SELECTED HIP-HOP ARTISTS Advisor: Dr. Viktor Osinubi Dissertation Dated May 2009 This study examined the discourse of selected Hip-Hop artists and the biographical aspects of the works. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage.

stack bundles riots that gang torrent download Stack Bundles. Stack Bundles, (born Rayquon Elliott), was a mixtape rapper plucked from the streets of Far Rockaway Queens and placed on the mixtape circuit where he entertained thousands over a years time before going through a bidding war where he landed with Jim Jones's MOB camp with fellow rapper Max B. Bundles burst onto the rap scene after signing to DJ Clue?'s Desert Storm Records, joining artists such as Fabolous and Joe Budden. He gained more fame after he brazenly approached Dipset charter member Jim Jones and asked the Harlem-based rapper to promote him. Impressed, Jones helped Bundles compile a series of mixtapes and collaborations. Unfortunately, he was shot once in the head and once in the neck as he entered the lobby of his Far Rockaway building just before 6 a.m. on June 11, 2007. Accompanied by a friend, Bundles was returning to his home in Redfern Houses on Beach Channel Drive after a night performing and socializing at Club Stereo in Manhattan's Chelsea section. The friend parted ways with Bundles in the building's lobby and told investigators that he heard shots moments later. He ran back to the building only to find Bundles bleeding heavily just steps from his first-floor apartment. Bundles' wallet, which contained both cash and credit cards, was still on the slain rapper's body, though one of his medallions had been taken, the friend told police. Riot's That Gang, Vol. 2. • How American Idol Constructs Celebrity, Collective Identity, and American Discourses
AMERICAN IDEAL: HOW AMERICAN IDOL CONSTRUCTS CELEBRITY, COLLECTIVE IDENTITY, AND AMERICAN DISCOURSES A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Amanda Scheiner McClain May, 2010 i © Copyright 2010 by Amanda Scheiner McClain All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a three-pronged study examining American themes, celebrity, and collective identity associated with the television program American Idol. The study includes discourse analyses of the first seven seasons of the program, of the season seven official American Idol message boards, and of the 2002 and 2008 show press coverage. The American themes included a rags-to-riches narrative, archetypes, and celebrity. The discourse-formed archetypes indicate which archetypes people of varied races may inhabit, who may be sexual, and what kinds of sexuality are permitted. On the show emotional exhibitions, archetypal resonance, and talent create a seemingly authentic celebrity while discourse positioning confirms this celebrity. The show also fostered a complication-free national American collective identity through the show discourse, while the online message boards facilitated the formation of two types of collective identities: a large group of American Idol fans and smaller contestant-affiliated fan groups. Finally, the press coverage study found two overtones present in the 2002 coverage, derision and awe, which were absent in the 2008 coverage. The primary reasons for this absence may be reluctance to criticize an immensely popular show and that the American Idol success was no longer surprising by 2008. By 2008, American Idol was so ingrained within American culture that to deride it was to critique America itself.

(eds), Adapting Idols: Authenticity, Identity and Performance in a Global Television Format, Farnham: Ashgate, pp. 181-194. Introduction This chapter looks at the way that gender and sexuality are performed and constructed within the series Pop Idol (2001-3) American Idol (2002-present) and the X Factor (2004-present). These shows were big hits in the UK and USA, propelling several acts to stardom, not least judge Simon Cowell, who features in all three. They offer the audience a chance to witness the creation of 'pop stars' by taking ordinary people and showing their transformations (Holmes, 2004) into celebrities. However, the process of star making at work in these shows offers strong discourses about what it means to be a man or a woman.
