Literature records of Arachnids are rather scarce and uncomprehensive and up to date, checklists dealing with them have not been published except for spiders and gall mites. Along with newly recorded families, genera and species, we compiled a preliminary checklist and review of Maltese Arachnida to facilitate faunistic research on these groups. In regard to mites, Geckobia sarahae Bertrand, Pfliegler & Sciberras, 2012 is established as a lapsus calami that refers to G. estherae Bertrand, Pfliegler & Sciberras, 2012. Paraliochthonius darwini is based upon several adults and a tritonymph, whilst P. vachoni is based on a male and a tritonymph. A key to the species of Paraliochthonius is presented, and the taxonomic status of P. insulae Hoff (from Jamaica), P. puertoricensis Muchmore (from Puerto Rico), P. johnstoni (Chamberlin) (from Mexico) and P. mexicanus Muchmore (from Mexico) is assessed, with Paraliochthonius mexicanus being removed from synonymy with P. johnstoni and regarded as a distinct species. New terms are proposed for two morphologies of the chelal teeth: diastemodentate for teeth in which a gap is present between adjacent teeth, and juxtadentate for teeth that are abutting each other. St Eustatius Arachnid Project By Joe Morpeth (Assistant National Park Ranger, July 2010 – January 2011) 1. General Information 1.1. Introduction. Globally, arachnids are considered to be one of the less documented classes of animals on our planet. Worldwide distribution comprises all land environments except polar extremes. There are currently 40,700 described species of spider, considered to represent only one fifth of the true total (Plantnick, 2009). On a faunistic level, arachnids in some regions are considered to be reasonably well known. However this is not the case for the Caribbean with only 8 islands having species level surveys for spiders. These include Cuba (Alayón, 1995), Barbados (Bryant, 1923; Alayón & Horrocks, 2004), St. Vincent & the Grenadines (Simon, 1894; de Silva, Horrocks & Alayón, 2006), Anguilla (Sewlal & Starr, 2006), Nevis (Sewlal & Starr, 2007), St. Kitts (Sewlal, 2008) and Grenada (Sewlal, 2009a), and a family level list for Trinidad (Cutler, 2005, Sewlal & Cutler, 2003, Sewlal & Alayón, 2007, Sewlal, 2009b). Other orders within the class Arachnid appear to be even less documented. The St Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA) is actively protecting the national parks and protected areas of the island. In order to do this it is vital to provide biological inventories which represent the biodiversity of the park and therefore provide a basis on what should be protected. A lack of knowledge of the arachnid taxa has lead to a preliminary survey which has resulted in discovering 7 arachnid orders present on the island and twenty families of spider. 1.2. Aim The fundamental aim of the project was to survey the arachnid fauna of St Eustatius and collect and document a substantial part of the total species present in a broad range of habitats. -

DOI: 10.4311/1700036R1 WILLIAM B. MUCHMORE (1920–2017): HIS TAXONOMIC CONTRIBUTIONS AND A COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHY Charles D.R. Stephen1,C and Mark S. Harvey2 Abstract William B. Muchmore (1920–2017) was the most influential worker on cave pseudoscorpions in North America and a globally-recognized expert on this arachnid order. Aside from brief stints in herpetological embryology and isopod taxonomy, he dedicated his 62-year career to the study of pseudoscorpions, focusing on their taxonomy. He described 278 new species, of which 167 were from caves. The majority of North American cave pseudoscorpions were either initially described or revised by him. He also wrote on the phoretic habits of pseudoscorpions, and speculated that cave pseudoscorpion distributions may be influenced by troglophilic rodents and bats. A complete bibliography of his scien- tific papers is provided. William (“Bill”) Breuleux Muchmore (Fig. 1) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 20, 1920. He was the first child of Oliver Charles Muchmore (1892−1968) and Ruby Breuleux (1895−1958), both of Ohio. His family has a long history in the United States (U.S.), with ancestry on his mother’s side tracing to Philip Frederick Breuleux (born 1830, Busserel, Haute Saône, France; immigrated in 1860 to Sycamore, Ohio), and on his father’s side to John Muchmore (born 1692, Windsor, Connecticut Colony; now the State of Connecticut). He had two children with his wife Marjorie Murrin: Susan Muchmore (born 1947) and Patricia Muchmore (born 1950). -

Weber SUMMARY Taxonomy : Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Arthropoda; Class: Arachnida; Order: Pseudoscorpiones; Family: Garypidae; Species: Garypus titanius Nativeness: Endemic to Ascension Island Description: Small, brownish arachnids with a flattened body and large pincer-like pedipalps that contain a poison gland used to subdue their invertebrate prey. As its name suggests, the giant pseudoscorpion is the largest species in this order, reaching lengths of 12 – 15 mm compared to 3 – 8 mm in most other species. IUCN Red List status: Critically Endangered Local trend: Unknown Threats: Threats to G. titanius are poorly understood but are likely to be primarily from introduced predators and competitors. Local G. titanius is known only from the important seabird nesting station of Boatswain Bird Island, a 5 hectare islet 300 m off the eastern coast of Ascension Island [1]. A brief survey in 2014 suggested it is more common on the rocky slopes below the summit plateau than on the flat, guano-covered plateau itself. However, more detailed work is needed to test this observation. Ashmole & Ashmole speculate that it may once have been more widespread, inhabiting the impressive seabird colonies that covered the main island of Ascension at the time of human discovery [2]. A combination of predation by introduced species and the extirpation of most of the mainland seabird nesting colonies by feral cats may explain the disappearance and continued absence of G.
