Growing up in Ibiza, Max Martire is one of the pioneers of the Ibiza EDM DJ scene, and was instrumental in changing the musical direction of the island in its EDM Superclub infancy. He has also held residencies at Space and Amnesia, as well as being a sought-after DJ for the largest, most exclusive private parties on the island. He has toured extensively throughout Europe, breaking first ground in the EDM global culture. His reputation for flawless mixing and beat-matching precision earned him the nickname “The Surgeon”. Max has been DJ’ing since he was 13 years old, and his life-long unique DJ style has been dedicated to playing 70’s funky, soulful disco house, delving into his collection of 22,000+ vinyls, and he is at the forefront of the “Nu-Disco” trend that is taking off throughout Ibiza and Europe. Shanti Matkin’s phenomenal output is the direct consequence of starting young and producing with a passion. He played his first club in Amsterdam at the age of 13, and with the mentoring of his older brother Riktam (GMS) he shaped his early recordings along with the first wave of trance pioneers resulting in dozens of XXX releases and DJ dates across the globe including regular outings to Europe, Mexico and Japan.

There was a walk with Billie Holiday, and a riveting rendition of the Jump blues hit, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy—made famous by the Andrew Sisters. All demonstrated the group‘s range and cohesive four-part harmony. Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy is ranked sixth among the Songs of the Century. Another highlight of the evening came with audience partici- pation. Before the Sledge’s career exploded with “We Are Fam- ily”, “He’s the Greatest Dancer” was the first number one hit from that same album. With the house lights up, Kathy combed the au- dience looking for the ‘greatest dancer’, and asked them to join the group on stage. Once the choreographed portion ended, it was all impromptu. Individually, the nine dancers from the audience anx- iously waited for their cue. Then, they were introduced and given the spotlight to show their stuff.     This interview with NILE RODGERS was conducted by the Library of Congress on May 9, 2018 Library of Congress: Is it true that the song “Le Freak” was born out of an evening of frustration outside of Studio 54? Nile Rodgers: Yes, 100%. I can give you the story. It was early on in our career and we had never produced [for] a star. All of our records had been successful—“Dance, Dance, Dance,” Norma Jean [Wright’s] “I Can’t Wait for Saturday.” They had all gone gold and platinum and made stars. But we had never produced for a star. Then Grace Jones phoned us. She said that the only way to understand her completely as an artist was to see her perform live. We were very anxious to produce what would have been her next album, to start a relationship with her. She told us to come to the back door of 54 and say we were “Personal friends of Miss Grace Jones.” And to say exactly that. Now Grace has a very interesting accent. It’s very unusual; it’s not reflective of any one culture. It’s like a mix of Marlene Dietrich and Bob Marley and Bela Lugosi. I thought [her accent] was a put on, at first…. When we went to the back door, we put that voice on. I mean, in some ways it was just too easy—we were just about to get into 54! It was the hottest club on the planet! The center of the disco universe! We are banging on the back door really hard in order to be heard above the level of the music inside.
