Stanley Hauerwas: Against Secularization in the Church Zeitschrift für Dialektische Theologie ◆ Heft 59 ◆ Jahrgang 29 ◆ Nummer 2 ◆ 2013 Herman Paul In May 2007, theologian Stanley Hauerwas addressed a packed audi- ence at Princeton Theological Seminary.1 Frowning behind his glasses, Hauerwas began his talk by firing a volley of uncomfortable questions: “How many of you worship in a church with an American flag? I am sorry to tell you your salvation is in doubt. How many of you worship in a church in which the Fourth of July is celebrated? I am sorry to tell you your salvation is in doubt. How many of you worship in a church that recognizes Thanksgiving? I am sorry to tell you your salvation is in doubt.” And so the speaker went on, to the consternation and amuse- ment of his audience, ending his accusations, less than two weeks before Mother’s Day, with the timely question: “How many of you worship in a church that recognizes ‘Mother’s Day’? I am sorry to tell you your salva- tion is in doubt.”2 These words seem characteristic, not merely of Hauerwas’s polemical style and fondness for hyperbolic metaphors, but also of the American context in which the theologian operates. Hauerwas is an American theo- logian, engaged in American debates, and always addressing American audiences or, as I shall argue, American Christians who, in Hauerwas’s assessment, better know how to be American than how to be Christian. This is not just an incidental circumstance. ARTICLE DOI: 10.1057/s41599-018-0129-1 OPEN The future of the philosophy of religion is the philosophy of culture—and vice versa Mike Grimshaw 1 ABSTRACT This paper reads the future of the Philosophy of Religion via a critical engagement with the thought of Paul Tillich and diversions into other thinkers to support the main thrust of the argument. It takes as a starting point Tillich’s discussion of the relationship “ 1234567890():,; between religion and culture in On the Boundary (1967), in particular his statement As religion is the substance of culture, culture is the form of religion” (69–70). With (unlikely) diversions via TS Eliot and Karl Barth, the argument is developed through a re-reading of Tillich’s work on a theology of culture and in particular the statement from Systematic Theology III (1964b) that “…religion cannot express itself even in a meaningful silence without culture, from which it takes all forms of meaningful expression. And we must restate that culture loses its depth and inexhaustibility without the ultimacy of the ultimate” (264). Central to the rethinking of this paper is then the reworking of Tillich’s statement in On the Boundary that “My philosophy of religion …consciously remains on the boundary between theology and philosophy, taking care not to lose the one in the other. It attempts to express the experience of the abyss in philosophical concepts and the idea of justification as the limitation of philosophy” (52). While this can be seen as expressing the basis of continental philosophy and its creative tension between theology and philosophy, this paper inserts culture as the meeting point that holds theology and philosophy in tension and not opposi- tion. -

Nelson Secularism as School of Public Policy Christianity in Disguise University of Maryland This article examines recent developments in the study of implicit religion and applies these insights to the secularization thesis in sociology. Secularization, rather than being opposed to religion, actually manifests itself as an implicit reli- gion, carrying marks of the previously dominant religious tradition in any given society. Thus, where various Christian traditions were once dominant, one may speak of “secular Protestantism,” “secular Catholicism,” or “secular Orthodoxy.” Secular religion is not as secular as most social scientists once expected. The idea of secularization itself may even be classed as an aspiration of secular religion’s faith in progress. The article concludes by way of example with an examination of modern environmentalism as a form of implicit Calvinism. Introduction As the American social scientists Pippa Norris and Ronald Inglehart recently observed, “The seminal thinkers of the nineteenth century—Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Karl Marx, and Sigmund Freud— all believed that religion would gradually fade in importance and cease to be significant with the advent of industrial society.”1 Freud, for example, wrote that religion is a great “illusion” that is “comparable to a childhood neurosis.” Seen from a scientific perspective, he wrote that we must now “view religious teachings, as it were, as neurotic relics, and we may now argue that the time has probably come … for replacing the [religious] effects of [psychological] repression by the results of the rational operation of the intellect.”2 Such negative views about the future of religion seemed for many to be confirmed in the twentieth century as 279 Robert H. -

Portier This dissertation examines the theological work of John Hugo by looking at its roots within the history of Ignatian spirituality, as well as within various nature-grace debates in Christian history. It also attempts to situate Hugo within the historical context of early twentieth-century Catholicism and America, particularly the period surrounding the Second World War. John Hugo (1911-1985) was a priest from Pittsburgh who is perhaps best known as Dorothy Day‟s spiritual director and leader of “the retreat” she memorialized in The Long Loneliness. Throughout much of American Catholic scholarship, Hugo‟s theology has been depicted as rigorist and even labeled as Jansenist, yet it was embraced by and had a great influence upon Day and many others. -

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE There are a lot of reasons not to want to talk about political theology. For starters, its association with the archconservative political theorist Carl Schmitt and his dubious association with Hitler1 are enough for many people to condemn the subject and take it off the table of intellectual conversation forever. Even people who have only a nodding acquaintance with this episode in the annals of political thought know enough to dismiss Schmitt as a German political theorist who venerated authoritarianism, exalted political violence, derided liberalism, and explicitly lent the imprimatur of his theory of political theology to Hitler’s Nazi ideology and rise to
