I assume that for most of you, like me the first car you learned to drive had a manual transmission on the steering column or on the floor. If you grew up on a farm you learned how to shift at a rather early age while some of us learned at Driver’s Ed in high school. My school had two cars, one with a three speed on the tree, and the other one had a automatic transmission. Not only did we learn how to drive but we also learn things like skid control, power slides on the dirt football parking lot, parallel parking, emergency lane changing etc. These days most high schools don’t have Driver’s Ed.; it is now being handled by private enterprises and I am betting that none of them teach power slides on a dirt parking lot anymore. I remember how my driving mates faces lit up when they finally figured out the mysteries of the clutch and gearshift. It’s easy to see why. When you’re starting out, driving a car with an manual transmission is scary enough. All those pedals and levers you’re used to seeing someone else operate, so effortlessly are now under your control. It can be quite intimidating. But when they “got it,” then all of a sudden it was more fun to drive. And this can lead to a true appreciation for twisty back roads and the understanding of why some of their friends love cars that go really, really fast. That wonderful feeling of control is one of the reasons why I enjoy driving with a stick, even though there‘s no practical reason to do so. Automatic transmissions these days are easier, shift faster, and are more fuel efficient than manuals. Only about 18 percent of new cars even offer them. Which is roughly the same percentage of Americans who can operate them. So the question arises, “Are we in the last days of the stick shift? Is driving a stick soon to become a lost skill?” Well, lets go back in time to the age of the Model T. The Model T replaced the main means of transportation- horse drawn vehicles, yet the Model T didn’t kill our interest in horses. It just changed it. Horses today are a massive industry in America. Why? Because they’re fun and useful in the right situations. Just like our stick shifts. The truth is, if the stick shift dies, it will be because we let it; the car people I know aren’t about to let that happen. Anyone who is into old cars loves to share their passion. So take the time to teach a young driver the ways of the stick. You’ll make their lives richer and in doing so help preserve a fundamental driving skill. And just maybe they will pass it on to their kids and others someday. And that is how we preserve the car culture for the next generation and beyond. One teenager and one ground gear at a time. Which reminds me of a real life story. I first tried teaching Brenda how to manually shift my Datsun Z-280 one Sunday afternoon early in our dating life. All I got out of it was ground gears, whip lash and no making out that evening, not good. I decided right there the cost was to high and someone else would need to take on the task to teach her how to drive a manual transmission-that was 39 years ago. This summer I decided that enough time had passed by, and it was safe to try it again. This time was on the Model A. When Brenda gets behind the wheel I can see in her eyes that frozen look of “Oh, my goodness, what did I do?” When she releases the clutch too soon and the car jerks back and forth. She kills the engine or she forgets to double clutch, and grinds the gears. (Continued on the next page) 3 After several failed starts, Brenda will say to me “I can’t do this.” But I know she can and that she will finally “get it” and when she does “get it,” WOW, it’s a real accomplishment. Now all she needs to do is go out and practice.

    “Kaiser Flyer # 5” Joseph W. (Jeeps) Frazer Joseph W. Frazer was the automobile “expert” part of the Kaiser-Frazer Corporation. He was respected by the Detroit “in” crowd and was well-known as an outstanding automotive expert and salesman. He was born in Nashville, Tenn in 1892 into a well-to-do family. His brother operated a Packard Agency in Nashville and young Joe would doodle with drawing pictures of cars during his school days. He could have started his working career at various high- salary jobs in an executive position in other industries but chose instead to begin work at Packard as a mechanic’s helper at less than 20 cents per hour. He wanted to be close to his love - Joseph W. Frazer in his Willow Run Office early 1946 automobiles. Although he was very successful in several aspects of the automobile business, including starting the first technical school for automotive mechanics, his heart was always in sales and promotion. He sold Packard motor cars in New York and at his brother’s Nashville dealership and by the end of World War I he was ready to begin his quest for making his mark on the automobile industry. He first took an opportunity at GM’s Chevrolet Division in sales. He was soon promoted into the GM Export Division as Treasurer and helped to organize the General Motors Acceptance Division, one of the first strictly automobile credit agencies established in the country. GM later loaned Joe to Pierce-Arrow to assist them in creating their own credit agency.

Kaiser does not, just his namesake automobile manu- factured at his plant near Ypsilanti, Michigan. Of the three, however, only Kaiser’s has remained a name to be reckoned with in American history: the entrepreneur behind Hoover, Bonneville, and Grand Coulee dams; builder of a third of the entire World War II U.S. merchant fleet, as well as the world’s largest cement plant at Permanente, California, and a steel mill in Fontana that employed as many as 11,000 workers; founder of the Kaiser Medical Care Program in Oakland, which became the template for the HMOs so much in current news; developer of Hawaii Kai, another tem- plate, in this case for the luxury resort hotel complex; chief of an industrial firm that made hundreds of different products, from airplanes to dish- washers. In 2004, the Oakland Museum of California staged an exhibition about Kaiser’s “impact on the modern economic and cultural landscape” called Henry J. Kaiser: Think Big. Not everything Kaiser created survives today—only a couple of those merchant ships, and the steel mill replaced by California Speedway, a land reuse entailing minimal toxic-waste clean- up. But he certainly left monuments. By comparison, Earl Muntz’s fame was fleeting—and yet his name did become a punch line for Jack Benny and Bob Hope, he is enshrined in the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Hall of Fame, and a sports car called the Muntz Jet is a rare treasure among collectors.

    “Kaiser Flyer # 1” The 1952 thru 1955 Kaiser “V” Emblem How About The “V” Emblem In 1948 the Kaiser Engineers begin development of an Overhead Valve V-8 Engine. Its original displacement was 288 cubic inches. The original Aluminum block castings (as Henry Kaiser had dictated) were changed to iron blocks in the last phase. The initial test engines experienced crankshaft failures until the balance problem was cured. It is interesting to note that the initial Chevrolet V-8 “Small-Block” prototype engines experienced crankshaft cracking at exactly the same place. The final Kaiser V8 design was a very good reliable engine and had many innovations for its time. The 1949 Kaiser designed V8 was of modern overhead valve design and used a new “green-sand” casting method. General Motors later also adopted this method of casting for the now-famous "Chev Small-Block V8" introduced in 1955. My father was one of the few Kaiser Dealers who actually witnessed the Kaiser engine running on a test stand at the Kaiser plant. The new Kaiser OHV engine was initially scheduled for production for the 1951 Kaiser models. However, Henry J. Kaiser had a passion to build an American “Peoples Car” to be to Americans what the Volkswagen was to the Germans. He had harbored this dream since before World War II had began. Kaiser had publicly announced his intent to build a “Peoples Car” to sell for $400 in 1942 and had actually experimented with a small fiberglass-bodied economy car as early as 1944. Over fifty prototypes were actually built.

They were unique designs for their time with design contributions by Mr. Howard "Dutch" Darrin of Paris who also designed several “custom-bodied” cars including the famous “Packard Darrin”. Darrin's design was low-slung and sleek, and although Darrin's basic body lines were somewhat adapted and the first Kaisers and Frazers were quite good-looking, they were much more fat and bulbous than the original Darrin design. During the years 1947 through 1954, Howard Darrin continued to contribute his design talents to Kaiser (Frazer had bowed out of the company in 1951).
