L E I G H Mike Leigh - Sovsebrun humor med moralske undertoner Det er i begrænset omfang; vi har haft lejlighed til at stifte af Andy Medhurst bekendtskab med en engelske instruktør Mike Leighs værker Spørgsmålet, som mange uvæger her i Danmark, men med den meget omtalte film Naked og ligt vil stille, er groft sagt, om hvor Filmmuseets retrospektive serie får vi endelig mere end en vidt en film, der viser så mange sce ner med sexuelle overgreb og som chance. Englænderen Andy Medhurst er erklæret Leigh-fan, lufter sådanne litanier af kvinde og han giver os her sin kærlige - og skarpe - introduktion til fjendsk retorik, ikke gør en dyd af filmene. disse handlinger og synspunkter ved netop at give dem så megen plads. Jeg har kun set Naked en gang, så aked er en film om mænd, der hed, og dens ’power’ vil fortsætte det er måske en forhastet dom, men hader kvinder, og som sådan med at inkassere endnu mere aner jeg synes alligevel, at den er foruroli vil den gøre mange tilskuere vrede kendelse og hyldest efter dens suc gende og ond. Og dog mener jeg, at og oprørte. Det er også en film om ces i Cannes. Den søger ikke en be det er væsentligt, at man ofrer fil mænd, der hader sig selv og om ver vidstløs og ligeglad reaktion, det vil men nogle grundige og alvorlige denen omkring disse mænd. En film, ikke kunne undgås, at den kommer overvejelser - begrundelsen for der sprænges af edder og fordærv og til at så splid og uoverensstemmelse hvorfor kan koges ned til to ord: en skræmmende, utrættelig bitter i forhold til en kønsrolledebat. -

X/no. 19 Poznań 2012 England in a Miniature in Mike Leigh’s ISSN 1731-450x “The Short and Curlies” Working on The Short and Curlies (1987) was a breakthrough in Mike Leigh’s career. After his successful and promising debut Bleak Moments (1971) the director felt the need to continue working in the film industry, but did not know where he should direct his career to. He spent a few next years working in the theatre and television. Throughout 1986 he was traveling and taking care of his sons. As he admits, he doubted whether he would ever work in the film industry again. He was a 43-year-old man, who believed that it was too late for another film debut. And then, as Leigh recalls, David Rose from Channel 4 contacted him and proposed that Leigh make a short film that would be a part of a series aired in the UK. Rose was so impressed with Leigh’s film that he decided to give the whole series the titleThe Short and Curlies (Leigh has referred to this idea as ridiculous).[1] This almost eighteen-minute film meant to Leigh a return to work and the beginning of a new stage in his career. It is noteworthy that all the themes which Mike Leigh devel- oped in his subsequent films, appeared inThe Short and Curlies. His films are known for having kept the same tone and having played out the same melody for years. This opinion can be easily turned into the accusation of being “boring” but Leigh turns it to his favour. -

Comprising twelve features and seven short films, LIFE COULD BE BETTER: THE FILMS OF MIKE LEIGH offers a comprehensive look at the work of this comedic chronicler of the everyday. Featuring ten New York premieres, the series is on view through April 24. Mike Leigh's films are a mix of social satire and pathos about middle- class and working-class families coping with the daily business of living in contemporary Great Britain. His tales of domestic bliss and pain are thrown into high relief with humorous, accurate detail. At the center of Leigh's work is his method of allowing his cast to create the characters and the final script through extensive rehearsal periods. LIFE COULD BE BETTER includes Leigh's first film Bleak Moments (1971), about a young office worker, her mentally disabled sister, and assorted misfits; Nuts in May (1976), in which a vulnerable city couple on a "back-to- nature" holiday cling to each other in an uncomfortable environment; and Abigail's Party (1977), adapted from Leigh's stage production, a comedy of manners concerning an obsessive hostess with upper-class pretensions. John Plotz: Hello and welcome to Recall This Book. This is John Plotz, today your solo host traveling the globe, at least as far as southern Ohio, to bring you an interview with the filmmaker, Mike Leigh, a seven- time Oscar nominee, winner of various BAFTA Awards, born Manchester in 1943, and making remarkable films for almost half a century now. So who's your favorite Mike Leigh? Is it the sly comic genius who condenses ordinary life into unforgettable vignettes? That would be something like Life Is Sweet or High Hopes or Naked. Or do you go instead for the grit, the squalor, and awkwardness of what it means to be stuck in class-based social misery, or to try to fake your way out of it? That would be films like Abigail's Party, Nuts in May, Meantime, Hard Labour. Or how about his more recent “period films”? He calls them that in contrast to what he calls the “chocolate box style” of history film making. Those would be films like Topsy-Turvy and Mr. Turner, which reveal that even such lauded 19th century types as Gilbert and Sullivan had ordinary lives worth depicting in their banality. John Plotz: If you're still drawing a blank, google him and I'll bet you find a film that you want to watch right away. I'll wait. Well, no, actually, I won't wait, but you do have something to look forward to after this interview. So when he and I sat down to talk (at a Victorianist convention in Columbus, Ohio no less) our conversation ranged from method acting to movies I've never seen but should've, to improvisation and John Cassavetes to when you can say "fuck" on British TV (turns out to be after 9:00 PM)--and that's only the first 20 minutes. -
